j/k it’s “retarded.”
At first glance I read that as jedit and wondered what you edited.

Is ‘dick’ as bad an insult?
To even imply that it might be would be to be completely ignorant of our culture’s history of misogyny.
I typed “the R word” into Google to find out what the R word is.

Trump says he’s giving us all a big tax cut for Christmas. OMG I don’t even know where to begin. With all due respect to his supporters, it’s like a 6-year-old talking to 4-year-olds.

A lot of Republicans are saying it too. It sounds so weird.
You know, one thing I’ve noticed about the news is how one or a few terms just start to get universally used by the media, like “war of words” or “collusion”. Gets a little bit repetitive after a while. Could y’all crack a thesaurus, please?

Either all gendered insults are okay or they’re all unacceptable. I say they’re all okay. That same standard should be applied to all categories by the way.

I used to agree, but sometimes history and context matter.
Example. Jokes about white men not being able to jump are largely okay, whereas jokes about black people stealing your stereo equipment are not.
(And no, I’m not just making a joke and disguising it, it’s a real stereotype at least where I live. Just clarifying in case of potential cultural misunderstandings)
Well even jokes depend on intent. Also, let’s be honest, the distinguishing factor between a comedian and just an asshole is whether he’s funny or not. As for words, it’s all a matter of intent. When it comes to racial insults, I say none of them are okay. When it comes to gendered insults (keep in mind I’m talking about the words themselves, not insulting people with them because of their gender), they’re all okay.

Maybe in the future if men and women swap power dynamics then “dick” will be unacceptable. Ideally, we’d live in a truly equal world, but even then we’d have to be generations removed to get away from the history of the words. But yes, in this ideal future, gendered insults would all be okay. But that’s not the world we live in now.
Do you think “pussy” is an acceptable insult?
Of course.

This is a good post.
I guess my hangup is that there is one specific gendered insult that is supposed to be far, far worse than any other, even other female-gendered insults, and is unacceptable in any context for very vague reasons of nondescript power dynamics and vague references to “history”. I know about the historical oppression of women, but why this word rather than any other? I don’t get it, I probably never will, I don’t particularly care to, I just find it a little interesting. Also, what about context? You’ve brought it up before. If I live in the UK is it suddenly acceptable? If a UK person moves here are they suddenly “problematic?” Which culture should submit to the other? The UK has a pretty similar history of sexism as the United States does so why is it okay there? I don’t like language policing.

Of course.
Even though in common usage it promotes the stereotype of women as weak-willed and cowardly?
Not in my usage it doesn’t.

I don’t know why it’s that way either but the fact is it’s not up to us. And I don’t think it’s too hard to adapt to other cultural sensitivities when necessary.
Not in my usage it doesn’t.
How do you use it then?
So I’m watching this Moore press conference thing. They’re doing the stupid hand-writing analysis argument now.

I’m pretty sure it’s the same reason that “fuck” is a lot worse than “shit”.
It should be up to us. We speak the language. If people were willing to take the time to realize the context and intent of people’s use of words then it would help a lot.

Is it? I would equate them if creating a scale of swear words.

By “us” I meant the two of us. It’s not as easy as telling everyone “hey, that word that offends you? don’t be offended anymore.”
Not in my usage it doesn’t.
How do you use it then?
I guess that’s kind of a bad example on my part because it’s a rare word for me to use. I don’t really like the sound of it. On rare occasions, I use it to describe obnoxious people that can’t help but vocalize how gutless they are.

Perhaps to a soccer mom it is, but like yhwx said, they’re kind of on par with each other. I’d say those two are considered worse because of what they literally mean, but then that brings up the hypocrisy of people considering “crap” worse than “shit” so, like I said, the only consistent way to handle this stuff is to either say they’re all okay, or they all aren’t. OR even better, you take it on a case by case basis. Did the person saying it use it in a way that made him asshole? If no, then move on. If yes, then, well, move on but remember that that guy is an asshole.
