I don’t understand the problem with changing the race of a fictional character. The race was made up to begin with.

It changes the character’s appearance.

So what?

It can also affect the personality of the character.

So what?

You believe that white privilege is real. Therefore, wouldn’t having the privilege vs not having it effect a character’s personality?

So what?

If you’re remaking/rebooting/whatever a franchise, there is no reason a character can’t be different. Just because something came first doesn’t make it “right.”

If a movie is part 2 of a story, ok fine. If Luke was black in ESB, that wouldn’t make sense. But otherwise, there is absolutely no reason Luke couldn’t be black in a remake. Because there was no reason he had to be white in the original.

Star Wars isn’t an adaption of a comic book.

Irrelevant to my point.

And somehow, I don’t think it would work any better than a female Starbuck.

Neither one, on their own, are doomed to not work. All that matters is the execution.

Some of us like accuracy to the source material.

No it is not, it shows that you make a bad comparison.

Female Starbuck, Black Two-Face and Black Supermen just don’t work imo.

Black Superman. I rest my case.

You should make a better case before resting it.

Why is that not a good enough case? Could you imagine the reaction to a black Superman? Admit it, you know it would not work.

I don’t care what the reaction to a black Superman would be, there’s no reason it couldn’t work.

It wouldn’t work and everyone knows it.

Would a white Uhura and/or Sisko work?

No, according to the liberal media, white people don’t work. They all hire minorities to do it for them.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Unless the fictional character in question is Asian. In that case, it’s perfectly acceptable to make them white.

All I wanted to say was I wanted to see Billy Dee’s take on Two Face, as the 1989 film cast him as Harvey Dent. I wasn’t the only one with a reasonable expectation back then that he would become Two Face in a sequel.
If anybody had a problem with his casting back in 1989, I don’t recall it.

Continue to suck any fun out of this thread without me.

I didn’t know anything about Harvey Dent/Two Face back then, if I had, I would have objected back then.

It is admittedly difficult to change the race of some characters, but really, Harvey Dent could have easily been played by Billy Dee Williams, and I would have enjoyed to see his take on the character. As was said, Tommy Lee Jones could have done a good job if he’d played him straight. Jones is a great actor. But I thought Williams could have really taken an interesting approach.

Uh, he did play Harvey Dent in the 1989 Batman movie?

It’s Two Face he was denied until the Lego Batman movie this year.

I off course knew that. I meant Harvey post-accident, but I should have written Two Face.

JEDIT: stupid autocorrect, and now I can’t fix it because it made it into the lurker names thread.

yep.

Well you’re still making a terrible case, which basically boils down to “because I said so and everyone agrees with me.”
