Speaking from Germany, where he was attending the Munich Security Conference, McCain said that without a free press, “I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That’s how dictators get started.”

McCain clarified that he wasn’t referring to the president as a dictator, but that attacks on journalists who are questioning those in power are usually a hallmark of autocratic governments.

“When you look at history,” McCain said, “the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press. And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”

“I’m not saying it, but I’m saying it.”

Thank god for Republicans, who are sure to stop the damn dirty lazy poor kids from stealing from taxpayers just because they’re hungry.

Hey I can pay to feed poor kids or I can pay for Trump to visit Mar-A-Lago for the ten thousandth time in a month.

I think I know which I’d rather my hard-earned dollars went to!

If he holds a sympathy rally every time he f**ks up, then prepare for the whole US to switch to a 90% rally-based Economy over the next 4 years.

A fascinating read about why some people thought it’d be a great idea to elect a meme as a president:

I ask again, please keep your posts reasonable in my presence from now on.

Interesting, but I am not sure if the characterization of basement dwellers is true or helpful. But certainly interesting, it’s the first time I have heard reference to the Trump voter who knows they are losing and wants to “turn into the skid” as the author kept stating. I haven’t seen these types of people in my experience, so I can’t help but doubt they exist.

Apparently Trump is now taking his cues from Kellyanne Conway instead of the other way around.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/19/world/europe/last-night-in-sweden-trumps-remark-baffles-a-nation.html?_r=0

Swedes reacted with confusion, anger and ridicule on Sunday to a vague remark by President Trump that suggested that something terrible had occurred in their country.

During a campaign-style rally on Saturday in Florida, Mr. Trump issued a sharp if discursive attack on refugee policies in Europe, ticking off a list of places that have been hit by terrorists.

“You look at what’s happening,” he told his supporters. “We’ve got to keep our country safe. You look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this?”

Not the Swedes.

Nothing particularly nefarious happened in Sweden on Friday — or Saturday, for that matter — and Swedes were left baffled.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/kentucky-lawmaker-protests-anti-abortion-advocates-with-viagra-bill/

Under a new bill proposed by a Kentucky state legislator, men seeking erectile dysfunction treatments such as Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra, would need to visit a doctor twice and get written permission from their wives before receiving the drugs.

House Bill 369 would also require a man be married and “make a sworn statement with his hand on a Bible that he will only use a prescription for a drug for erectile dysfunction when having sexual relations with his current spouse.”

Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, a Democrat from Louisville, proposed the law last week as a pointed statement to anti-abortion advocates.

“My point is to illustrate how intrusive and ridiculous it is for elected officials to be inserting themselves into private and personal medical decisions,” she told Reuters.

The proposal comes days after Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, a Republican, signed an “informed consent” law requiring women to receive counsel from a doctor 24 hours before having an abortion.

In December, Rep. Mia McLeod, a Democrat from Columbia, South Carolina, put forth a bill in that state that would require men to wait 24 hours after receiving a prescription for an erectile dysfunction drug to fill it. Women in the state must wait 24 hours before having an abortion.

Other past attempts include a proposed “spilled semen amendment” in Oklahoma that would declare it an act against unborn children for men to waste sperm, and an amendment to a bill in Virginia requiring an ultrasound before an abortion that would mandate men have a rectal exam before being prescribed Viagra.

I didn’t realize you were a fan of Charlie Chan.

As a child the BBC used to show everything, Silent comedy greats like Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd, Early serials like Flash Gordon, King of the Rocketmen and Buck Rogers and Charlie Chan, Rathbone Sherlock Holmes, The RKO Saint series, Weissmuller’s Tarzan, Champion the Wonder Horse etc all in marvelous monochrome.

I would have no problem paying for a television license for that sort of material.
They are of their time but Chan in those serials is taken as seriesly as Holmes is in his. His ethnicity is on display but doesn’t impact the integrity of the character. Quite progressive in it’s way.
The pace is slow for modern audiences but I would like a revival of the character as a period piece.

My father liked Charlie Chan. He loved all those old murder mystery movies. Of course he grew up when those were being made.

I love them too.
Particularly the Rathbone films as I had read the short stories when I was realy little. The shift to the wartime setting was a bit confusing.
