DESPECIALIZED EDITION QUALITY CONTROL THREAD - REPORT ISSUES HERE

Please report any problems you find with any of the Despecialized Editions, including workprints, in this thread.

It would be great, if you could stick to a specific format in the report posts, so that I can later do a simple search:

REPORT-(Movie name short SW,ESB,ROTJ)-v(version number - v1.0 and so on)-(for workprints add WP)
(time in the hh : mm : ss format so for example 00:32:11)
(frame number if you know it - but not necessary, unless you want to point to one specific frame)
(description of the issue - the main point in bold if possible)

Here are two examples:

REPORT-ROTJ-v2.0-WP
00:14:58
021552
There is an artifact as the subtitle disappears.

REPORT-SW-v2.5
01:11:54
There’s a noticeable wobble to the corridor extension.

There are two reasons for making this separate thread:

A) We don’t want to spoil the fun for those who may not have noticed the problems.

But mainly B) It will be easier for me to check back to this thread, because the issues won’t be buried between lots of other posts. This is why I’d like to ask everyone to stay strictly on topic - we can discuss the reported problems but not anything else!!! Thank you!!!

Oh, wow, yeah - someone already pointed this out before but I only checked it out now and yes, that is definitely caused by the dirt-removal and I will need to fix it manually. Thanks!

All the shots in these timeframes have a fuzzy look to them, and probably need to be replaced with 35mm print scans. I think they’re taken from the 1993 laserdisc, although I’m not 100% sure.

Thank you guys but could you please read the first post and edit your posts accordingly?

Those zoomed in shots in ESB are BD extended on all sides with 97SE but yeah, they do need an update.

REPORT-ROTJ-WP-2.0

00:54:00 (and maybe 00:53:51 too)
The space around the Sanctuary Moon is extremely blue (this is very prominent since 2004).

01:22:02
The blinking lights on the shield generator are red, while in GOUT, they appear to be white! Do you have a 35mm-source of that scene? Maybe the colours are just washed out.

01:29:19
The red bars are too dark.

01:33:24
The garbage matte around the Death Star II is much visible (also thanks to Lowry).

01:34:23
The Star Destroyers and the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon are extremely reddish.

01:54:30 and several scenes later
Palpatine’s face looks a bit too coloured (maybe).

Vader’s death scene seems a bit too blue to me.

02:01:25
The frontside of the X-Wing engines has a red glow which isn’t there in GOUT.

02:05:26
There’s some damage or particle above Luke’s face. I know that there are missing frames in the celebration scene but did you consider to use more material from v1.0 here, especially the force ghosts? It looked pretty good!

02:06:55
There’s a dust particle above “Lando”.

188200, 188360, 188450 and 188900
There are some more dust particles between the credits.

188945
There’s a burning mark.

REPORT-SW-v2.5

0:15:14 The sky around the rotoscoped dewback is a different color than the surrounding sky. Probably varies depending on TV set calibration, but on a decently (not perfectly) calibrated set, it does look like a pink halo around the dewback.

0:16:30 Same as above around the Jawas. Lighter halo of sand around them. Was less noticable on previous DeSp revisions, likely due to different color timing of the 35mm portion.

0:42:31 Speeder 35mm shot. This is the only time I’m going to bring up color in and of itself. But something is very wrong with all the yellow in this shot.

0:43:23 As they exit the speeder: The 35mm on the left looks incredibly different from the BD footage on the right. Especially the sky. Needs to be either better matched or take the entire background from 35mm source and foreground/characters from BD.

REPORT-ESB-v2.0

The only major issues are the blurry unzoomed shots previously mentioned.

1:47:24 There’s a missing piece of junk on the ground. It doesn’t matter.

[Also various credit issues that are no longer relevant]

REPORT-Jedi-v2.0WP

[Luke hologram] SE recomp

[Various Rancor shots] Too dark. Too blue.

0:29:28 35mm sail barge shot. Stationary lens dirt. May not be an easy fix. Not a big deal.

0:30:38 Tramline scratch on Sarlacc close up.

0:36:16 Final Tatooine shot. Much damage. Color. Flicker.

[Obiwan ghost] SE Recomp

1:35:54 (For example) Emperor’s slug covers seem very low res. But whether or not they appear depends on TV contrast. However, they seem like they might bleed over into his face as it moves, and I don’t know enough about these shots to know if that is accurate.

Frame 173821 - Scratch on Anakin’s face.

2:04:45, 2:04:50, 2:04:55 Much gate weave in the fireworks shots.

2:06:28 Final shot, some gate weave.

Credit glitches have been mentioned.

REPORT-Jedi-v2.0WP

Everyone has pretty much already pointed out the other issues, but I did want to add my 2c on some of the 35mm sources.

  • The Rancor 35mm elements are too dark compared to the BR version and not quite the same color (the BR seem brownish and the 35mm shots are greenish).

  • The Sarlacc 35mm elements seem a little ‘hot’ and blown out. I don’t know if the highlights need to be decreased or what (I know crap about color correction…)

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I think the sand itself in the 35mm sarlacc scenes is a good color, and hopefully the surrounding BD shots (which were always all over the place) will match it. Skin tones in that sequence also need some work.

Those two ‘PAL-only’ frames have already been trimmed in ESB-v2.0.
Do the same thing for v2.5, so that 150204 will be the first frame of the next reel

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

CatBus - or ANYONE on this thread - How does one implement the subtitle file patch for the missing Boushh and Jabba subtitles into the final (rar combined) mkv file of ROTJWP 2.0? Do I just drag and drop them into Project Threepio’s SRT and SUP folders, respectively? If so, it’s not working for me. What am I doing wrong?

This is a subtle one, but this shot just jumped out as fake looking to me. Part of that will be because of the higher clarity, but I think the way this shot is much brighter and higher contrast than the laserdisc makes this matte painting stick out like a sore thumb.

Here’s how it looked on laserdisc: http://i.imgur.com/TTbhsQe.jpg

I think the lack of shadow on the ship now is the main thing I’m noticing, especially in that darker bit in the middle which isn’t dark anymore. Anyways, thanks for the great work on all this!
