No one is going to listen to your podcast with attitude like that. I for sure WILL not pass the word.

This is the podcast of UUpodcast, not TV's Frink or Jetrell Fo. UUpodcast didn't catch an attitude with you.

 Thanks.

I have no idea what exactly happened here, but sorry to be the one to host all of this?

This kind of thing happens all the time here, actually, so don't worry about it.  One guy who never gets out of this particular subforum does not a forum make.

Yes, and your a saint... Really?

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.

Can you please just give it a rest?

I'm getting annoyed with certain people, and that's not good. Further shenanigans are not recommended.

What do you believe is the problem with my signature?

To answer this question legitimately, it is really long and breaks up the flow of reading other posts...similar to large annoying images, which at least I can turn off in the forum options.

The weird (and genuinely annoying) thing is that I can't do any more than three lines (or links) in my signature before it screws up everything, which is why my signature is formatted the way it is.

I believe he meant "no one is going to listen to the podcast episode you were on."

Also, I've never heard the phrase "catch an attitude" before.  Sounds very 1950's.

When I politely request that people stop, I mean everybody.

Thread lock imminent.

My bad, I thought I was being polite with those last two posts, at least.  It would be a shame to have this thread locked, so please forgive me for carrying on.

The phrase I've heard was "cop an attitude".

Keeping in mind that, being trans (I don't get into it much), I have a voice that is incredibly jarring if you've seen my avatar, or if you see the handle I use here, but I've had a minor hand in preservations for a while, I could probably do something.

(By pitching my voice up 30-40% it will probably sound less like there's something wrong with me.) ;)

Molly, I'd personally like UUpodcast to interview you on your anime fan translation work. I think you once said you worked on Detective Conan, which I love by the way! I'd like to know more about your work on that, and fan subbing as a whole. You seem to know a great deal about it. :)

What can you get a Wookiee for (Life Day) Christmas when he already owns a comb?

Yes, I still work on Detective Conan.

Good anime, wish it had done better in the States.

Absolutely! Sorry to be so off-topic, but I just wanted to say a heartfelt "thank you!" for all of your efforts, Molly! :) I'm very glad dedicated Case Closed fans like you exist, as the show, films and new DS game are all a real treasure.

Thanks again! :)

(Sorry for the derailment, UUpodcast.)

Please tell me Detective Conan involves Conan the Barbarian solving crimes.

Author

Nah. That's actually why they couldn't use "Conan" in the title in the US (they call it "Case Closed" here).

I would love to talk to you about that. I actually am fascinated by fan subbing culture but it somehow just totally slipped my mind until now.

And as I tell everyone, your voice is going to be totally fine. If you're seriously not comfortable with your voice though we can work with filters during or after to make it something that you are comfortable with. You can email me at rob@undressingunderground.com

I do a podcast about weird stuff, which has lead me to talk to a few fan editors/preservationists from this site, including TVs Frink and Q2Harmy, Molly, and Mike Verta. You can also click around for other interviews with a webcam dominatrix, a conspiracy theorist podcaster, noise musicians, various Gawker commenters, a spokesperson for the religion based on the Big Lebowski, and much, much more. (Ok, maybe not that much more yet.)

The problem with fansubs is that they are more likely to add unnecessary swearing. One anime I saw had fansubs made shortly after japanese airings had lots of swearing. When official subs were made a decade later, most of the profanity went away.

Depends. Usually the excess of profanity is to cover for incompetence.

I actually avoid profanity in my translations and edits, although I did put in a couple infamous bombs ("Palkia, you SOB" in Pokémon movie 10, which I edited; and an S-bomb in Detective Conan episode 345 when the main character finds his complex scheme destroyed and is now in the hands of the enemy). There's a time and a place for everything, and very rarely should there be profanity in anime subtitles.

As someone not very familiar with anime, are the people making the subs translating the cursing (whereas official translations get cleaned up), or are they making up swears to make it more edgy/adult/whatever?

I do remember Final Fantasy 4 or 5 translation romhacks having some additional cursing. I think that was a mixture of both official and unofficial language.

Japanese doesn't really have the concept of profanity in the same way English does.

In most cases, profanity in fansubs can be placed in two categories: "fifteening" (trying to make something cater to a more adult audience; DBZ for example targets an older demographic in the anglosphere than it does in Japan) and "compensation" (the translator's trying to cover up something, like the fact he doesn't actually understand Japanese very well).

OP, I e-mailed you as requested - I may have fallen into your spamtrap as is typical of my mail.

Hey, thanks. I think I'm done with preservation stuff for a while though... unless I run out of guests, in which case sure!

i was actually back on though cause I'm gonna post on that chip tune forum you directed me to earlier.

Also, Molly's episode will be up on 9/1

Understood, but did you google Mr. Verta?  He's a pretty interesting cat even putting the preservationist stuff aside.  I doubt he'll want to talk about his ex-wife much, but it would certainly be a great listen if he did.

Also, I'm looking forward to hearing Molly!
