Great!  More than 1/4 of the way there.  Thanks for the update!

How's the progress now?  Can we get a new screenshot of the new footage to wet our appetites? :-)

Jesus, man. Can you not be patient? He said it would take at least 45 days. So don't expect anything until the end of August (at the earliest).

Progress is still slow. However, in the mean time I've also been working on SRV13. I actually have to agree with g-force for a change. There's an ugly slow moving grain in the upscale that is really visible. I've updated my script to get rid of it. Here's a first screenshot comparison:

More to follow when I get home from work...

Update: the original comparison was accidentally deleted.

Fabulous work, as always, DrDre. I believe managing that grain is a worthy goal. I remember our feedback on the screenshot comparisons was to keep the film grain intact, but after watching the moving SR clips - as amazing as they were - I agree that the big grain that appeared to be "floating above" the upscaled moving image could be distracting, and was not necessarily representative of the actual film elements. Eager to see a moving clip of SRV13.

If your crop is water, what, exactly, would you dust your crops with?

Yes, I agree. It was really the only problem with SR12, and the reason I was reluctant to move on from preferring SR10 for a while. Hard to tell from a single frame, but 13 seems to look nice.

I see much more haloing at the top of 3PO's head. Also, the lines on his left shoulder are more aliased than before. But yes, there is more detail.

Darth Id on ‘Why “Ben”?’:

And while we’re at it, we need to figure out why they kept calling Mark Hamill’s character “Luke Skywalker,” since it’s my subjective opinion that his name is actually Schnarzle Shnuzzle.  It just doesn’t make sense!

Damn you George Lucas for never explaining why they all keep calling Schnarzle “Luke”!

Damn You!!!

In most frames aliasing is significantly reduced compared to SRV10. C3PO's left shoulder is an exception, although aliasing is still much reduced compared to the simple upscale. SRV10 used a haloing filter that destroyed a lot of detail, as was extensively discussed a while ago, therefore it was decided to keep the halos in favour of more detail.

The aliasing on the other shoulder and head are improved though, strangely.

That's what happens with most of these scripts. You gain something most of the time, but sometimes you also may get a slightly worse outcome. The antialiasing for this frame is identical to SRV12 though, since nothing was changed in that part of the script.

I will post a number of other frames later today.

Yes, I noticed that it is the only case where aliasing got worse in that frame.

Between your last frame and the one from Post 979 is a also a minor difference.

OTT: Nice new profile picture ;)

Strange it's same image, so they should be identical.

I love that image of the Jedi Master. Always amazed how they got those expressions from a puppet.

The second version is one with less grain, but more blur.

Absolutely, I still wonder what they meant to express with the face from my picture:

I think that expression says: I'm bored with Luke's whining... ;-)

Oh yes, that's perfect! DrDre's could be some "off-camera" shot in a bad sit-com.

I'm happy to hear about the reduction in the floating grain blobs. So does this mean you might do another pass on the entire movie with SRV13?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

A comparison of SRV12 and SRV13 screenshots would be more beneficial to determine whether to start over or not.

But the comparison of SRV13 with the base upscale is quite good.

I think SRV13 may be my new favorite.  Comparisons of SRV12 and SRV13 would definitely be interesting especially if they show the floating grain reduced or removed.  I believe I commented on that awhile back too so it is nice to hear it can be removed. The only glaring issue left that I wish could be removed is the halos.  Maybe we gave up to early on that effort.

And kane1138, I mostly wanted some new screenshots and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for an update while I was at it.  And look what happened with all this new discussion, so :P   ;-)

I think DrDre had experimented with removing halos before. It was successful, but the amount of detail lost was not acceptable. So we opted for more detail, but forced to live with the haloing.

The inherent nature of Dvds simply don't allow a very nice, natural, grain field. The bit rate is far too low. What has been recovered is impressive already. Plus, during the mastering process, they probably screwed up and produced frozen grain chunks. This happens sometimes with poorly mastered Blu Rays as well.

Seeing it in motion is the key factor of course. Grain usually looks worse in static pictures.

Thanks for all the feedback. SRV13 is still a work in progress. I will post some updated screenshots soon, including comparisons to SRV12.

DrDre, are you using multi-threading in Avisynth? Because it is not in your script that you posted, although I think you might have taken it out to leave out more dependencies.
