Behodar: Have you seen screenshot comparisons that can prove the edges are cropped and not that the matte was opened at the top/bottom?

I have. I found this screenshot when trying to determine the original aspect (be sure to right-click and open in new window to stop the forum from cropping the right-hand edge off):

And here’s the same frame from the Blu-ray:

The back of the box also has a thumbnail in 2.39 (sorry about the quality):

And the Blu-ray:

Thanks!

No problem. :-)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

There's still one problem, though. I just registered to the MySpleen boards, but I don't know where the torrents are. I searched the titles of the movies I wanted, but nothing came up. I clicked on the MySpleen logo, and it asked for a username and password. It's not letting me use the username and password I created for the forums. I'm sorry, but I'm new at this.

I'm gonna call that pretty definitive.  Why must they do this?

I'm now betting that the Special Edition coming this holiday will miraculously have the correct AR.

Taking a completed 2K file and creating a 1080p file, they can:

1. Crop only horizontally.
Maintains: 1:1 pixels, vertical image info.
Alters: aspect ratio by 6%, 128 pixel columns lost.

2. Crop horizontally and vertically.
Maintains: 1:1 pixels, aspect ratio.
Alters: 128 pixel columns and 54 rows lost.

3. Downsize by 15/16, generating artifacts that are especially visible for something with pin-point pixels (ex: ringing) The entire image is negatively altered.
Maintains: aspect ratio, horizontal & vertical image info.
Alters: all pixels malformed.

As nickdiba noted, #2 is common practice for Blu-ray releases, though I think "always" is overstating things. And overcropping for the sake of maintaining AR goes back to the LaserDisc days.

I have a letter I would like to send to Disney about releasing Saludos Amigos, Make Mine Music, and Melody Time on Blu-Ray uncensored. I also wanted to request they release an "extended cut" of The Black Cauldron with the 12 missing minutes put back in. I already posted my rough draft on Blu-Ray.com, but I would like to put it up here, as well.

Keep in mind that this is a very rough draft. I'm not yet satisfied with the structure of my sentences and paragraphs yet. If anyone wants to help me out, please let me know.

Dear Disney,

I understand there were a few big edits made to the DVDs of Saludos Amigos, Make Mine Music, and Melody Time.
In Saludos Amigos, the first close-up shot of Goofy in the El Gaucho Goofy segment was edited to remove him smoking a cigarette. The edit also removes a bit of the narrator’s narration. What I do not understand is why Goofy’s cigarette is censored out, when José Carioca is allowed to smoke a cigar in the same movie?

I am aware Saludos Amigos just went through a new digital restoration, and is on the iTunes Store, but unfortunately, it is still censored. I know the movie was released uncensored on the DVD for Walt & El Grupo, but it does not use the newly restored print, so please reconsider the decision to censor the movie when it comes out on Blu-Ray. It is important for kids to know that everyone back then smoked, and the movie is a product of its time.

In Make Mine Music, the entire first segment of the movie, The Martins and the Coys was removed because of “graphic gunplay not suitable for children.” But there are plenty of other Disney movies that have guns used in various ways, like Bambi, and The Fox and the Hound. This whole segment was included in the Region 2 DVD. A minor edit was also made that removed a woman’s breasts in the segment, All the Cats Join In.

In Melody Time, two edits were made in the Pecos Bill segment that removed Bill’s cigarette and the scene of him lassoing a tornado. Because the cigarette was removed, it sometimes looks like Bill is making odd hand and mouth gestures for no apparent reason. They also remove some lyrics from the song playing during the tornado scene. These scenes were unedited in the Region 2 DVD of Melody Time.

For a side-by-side comparison of Pecos Bill on the Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs, here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhGTQ3aHfeY

I honestly believe that if these edits will be in the eventual Blu-Ray releases of these movies, there will be many people criticizing Disney about them. I know Disney is aware they have a “family friendly” reputation, but I don’t think anyone would complain if they left these scenes uncensored. It’s been almost 15 years since the original DVDs of these movies came out, and I really hope Disney has had a change of heart for the die-hard Disney fans out there. To sum it all up, “Please release the Blu-Rays of the movies uncensored.”

I have read somewhere that The Black Cauldron had 12 minutes of finished animation and music that was cut from the movie before release. I have a feeling that the lost minutes could add a lot to the movie, even if it would make the movie much darker. It would be great if you could release an “extended cut” of The Black Cauldron, as long as it contains a disclaimer saying that this version may not be suitable for children. I am pretty sure the negatives still exist somewhere in the Disney archives.

Here is a cel from one of the missing shots:

That's a pretty solid argument.  I can see where they wouldn't want to resize the image since they can do a direct 1:1 pixel copy from their computers to BD... except is it really likely that their master is 2k?

I would THINK at this point it would be 4k, which would mean there is resizing no matter what.

My letter is about suggestions for future releases. Fantasia has already gotten a Blu-Ray release, and I don't think it will be rereleased any time soon, but at least the editing of the scenes with Sunflower isn't as blatant as it is on the 60th Anniversary DVD.

Re: Frozen, IMDB claims that the DI was 2K. Most movies and most cinema projectors are (last I checked -- it's one argument the anti-4K crowd like to use in their favor).

I just fully downloaded Doctor M's Restored versions of Make Mine Music and Melody Time, and I must say, I'm pretty impressed with the results.

I would be more satisfied though, if he could tinker the picture up in both movies by removing some of the film dirt.

Other than that, it's perfect! ;)

I have one other request, please.

I really wish I could have all of the bonus features that are exclusive to the Deluxe CAV laserdiscs for Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros, The Lion King, Pocahontas, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I don't want to spend so much money for a laserdisc player just so I can watch these bonuses. If anyone has these laserdiscs on hand, could they please record and upload them on YouTube or any similar site?

Most definitely! Do we want to try another fund raiser?

Slow down, please. Are we sure that the pastoral is complete on this ? Even thought it's a cropped image edition from the 1960's, let's make sure it's the right version first.

Even if it is the cropped version the fact that it is IB is a significant fact. The colors have never been quite right on the home release versions (compared to physical cels I have in my collection) so IB should be closer to that. Personally, both  prints have value - the IB and the 1982 version. I'm going to see what I can do about acquiring them for my collection, but I would love to have help with funds for initial purchase as well as scanning and shipping costs.

I'm working on something for Lion King. If I can get some good test results, I'll announce it. But I can do a transfer of the bonus features regardless. Thankfully, I just got a CLD-D703 so the results should be top notch.
