Underwater city? Gungans? Pod race? Dumb Qui Gon Booze? It could't feel less like Star Wars. :C

You'll notice that people here are somewhat...obsessed...with original versions.  Even the crappy ones!

Cloud city? Ewoks? (or even Jawas?), Speederbike race? Dumb cackling wicked-witch Emperor?

There's nothing inherently un-starwarsy about these concepts in your post; I'm not saying that TPM is a good movie, not by a long shot, but I do agree with AnctuFaalb, that it felt more like Star Wars than the other two prequels.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but Blu-rays will never Harmy.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I never said I was almost done with it, I just said that I might try to do it, and I actually never got around to it.

Oh sorry I thought you were. So you won't be doing it at all then or after the blu-ray and ESB/ROTJ Despecialized 2.0?

Anyone here notice any strange audio glitches with the 1985 Laserdisc track on the 2.5?  Like very faint repetitions of sound in some scenes?  Like the scene with Luke & Ben on the Falcon.  When Ben replies "That's good, you've taken your first step into a larger world."  After he says world, you then hear the word again very faintly.  Like world--orld.  There's other examples too but that one really sticks out for me.  Just wonder if anyone else noticed.

Yep, I can hear that one, although to me it seems more like "world-d" rather than "world-orld". However, if the original 85 LD was like that then it's a faithful 85 mix :)

The other one I've noticed is that at 17:00 the phrase "tell Uncle" has some noticeable clipping and sounds more like "tel'uncle". The GOUT has this same clipping so I'd have assumed that the same issue was present theatrically. However, the 77 mono mix does not have clipping there! Does anyone know the story behind this one? I'm aware that later releases have the line as "tell your Uncle" but that doesn't explain why the mono mix is different from the others.

^ The mono mix was created separately from the original 70mm 6-track and 35mm stereo versions, and has many significant changes.  They actually used a different voice actor for Aunt Beru in the mono mix.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

Please don't mention Ewoks when you don't have to. :(

If I remember correctly, Aunt Beru's voice is the original actress only in the mono mix. Someone else was brought in to dub over her lines for every other mix.

Actually, I think none of the mixes feature her original voice.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Someone claims to have once seen a mix which gave her a thick British accent, ergo the voice of the original actress.

Yeah, I call BS too.

Just to give a (relatively) short summation:

It sounds to me that the stereo and mono mixes are the same person, just different takes. Rinzler's book says that sound mixer Derek Ball went to Fraser's house to do ADR, so I am convinced that both mixes are her.

Fraser has a British accent, so I'd guess that during shooting she either used her normal voice. Even if she did put on an accent, Lucas clearly wasn't satisfied, and dispatched Ball to loop Fraser's lines with the familiar American accent.

When the Dolby Stereo/70mm mixes were assembled, Lucas/Burtt/whoever selected one out of the multiple takes for each line. Later, when the mono was done, they changed their mind and picked different takes for every line. (I could go on and on about how Lucas and/or Burtt kept swapping out ADR over the years, but I won't.)

As to "tell Uncle"/"tell your uncle", the shooting script says "tell Owen", so perhaps that's what was said on set, and Lucas changed the line for the ADR script. "Tell Uncle" could have been Burtt trying to get the ADR to sync better with the footage.

Perhaps her lips could be more clearly read on a theater screen, but since it's nearly impossible to read them from that distance on a TV, maybe Matthew Wood thought "screw it" and went back to "Tell your uncle."

Well TServo's post was pretty much spot on, and would answer any questions that followers of this project may have about the mono mix.

However the three or four posts earlier on this page that give inaccurate information from unreliable sources are only going to perpetuate confusion. I was therefore linked to a thread where this has already been discussed and debunked.

Answers to questions about the other sound mixes on Harmy's release may be found here.

Speaking of Beru's voice, there was a very slight change to her dialogue for the SE. Compare the audio of the original to the SE or post-SE when she says, "He has too much of her father in him." Ever since '97, there's a very slight pause inserted before the word 'father.'

I learned that while researching to make a custom GOUT-synced audio track for myself. I grew up with the 1997 SE and certain bits of audio don't sound right to me unless they're there. Things like the computer noises from the SE (and from the mono mix) as the Falcon takes off from the Death Star. I'm glad the DEed is GOUT-synced, as it makes these kinds of things relatively easy to do.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Some time ago someone asked about the covers for v2.5. The plan is that there will be several different versions for people to choose from and they will come with the BD download both as .png and as .psd with editable parts - like if someone doesn't want theirs to say DESPECIALIZED EDITION, they'll be able to simply turn that layer off. Or if someone made their own disc with different sound and subtitle options, they will be able to correct the cover's info.

That's a great idea. I constantly find myself editing other people's custom covers for personal use, and this will make it much easier. Much appreciated Harmy!

Hey, Harmy, I know you've been thanked many many times for this, but I have to add my thanks as well.  It's like you've given me back a piece of my childhood that was taken from me.  I'm only twenty years old, but I was a 90s kid, and I grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS.  I watched at least one episode from the trilogy every week for what seems like many years; I know those movies by heart.  When the DVD set came out in 2004 I was so excited to see the movies I grew up watching, it had been a while since I had last watched Star Wars since our last VHS player had died some years before.  Needless to say I was shocked and saddened when I saw what had been done to the story I grew up with.  Last night, when I watched your reconstruction of Star Wars (A New Hope), I almost teared up, thank you Harmy, thank you.

Agreed!!

Someone has to send out a new issue of Bantha Tracks with this info in it.  :)
