I've never seen the full updated A New Hope but if there is a way to use the Vader suit to add a scene for ANH then It would be great to add a scene where Vader finds out the name of the pilot that destroyed the death star.

You could add a scene right after luke, han and leia walk away from the x-wing celebrating but before the ceremony. Have a scene of Vaders tie fighter landing in the docking bay of a near by star destroyer.

in that scene vader could be told what the name of the pilot who destroyed the death star is.

Hated the fact that vader finds out he has a child off screen. (For those who will watch the old trilogy first they will just think Vader is shocked to her the name Luke SKYWALKER because Vader 'betrayed and Murdered your father'. They will think Vader is thinking of Luke's Father that he had killed (but we know that lukes father....is...VADER nooooooooooo)

NO.

It's no stretch of the imagination to think that some Imperial operative found out who destroyed the Death Star and got word back to Vader at some point.  We don't need to see it happen to know it did.

The reason "I am your father!" worked so well in 1980 was BECAUSE you didn't see it coming.  Obi-Wan's explanation of it in ROTJ forced you to realize that the world/galaxy isn't as linear and straightforward as you thought it was.

The biggest problem with the PT (and Lucas' changes to the OT, and films today in general) is that they're spoon-feeding the audience every last detail before it's needed.  In effect, they're spoiling the end of the movie IN the movie!

Part of what makes a good film good is that you're going along WITH one or more of the characters trying to figure out what's going on.  If you have all the necessary information ahead of time, it kills all the mystery and suspense.  Watching the film becomes a passive experience rather than an active one.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

The obvious way to do it would be to have him talk to Palpatine about who blew up the Death Star... especially since they talk about exactly that in ESBSE.

You can replace fuzzy shots of David Prowse from a distance, but RotS proved NO ONE can take his place.

Actually ROTS only proved that Hayden couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag (as Anakin OR as Vader)

If there WERE work being done to fix the matte-ness of Vader's suit in the opening of ANH (and I'm not saying there is) then my guess would be that, in order to preserve the iconic acting job done by Prowse, a new Vader would be shot going through the movements and only PARTS of the costume would be superimposed over the film as it is now (specifically the helmet shroud)

Call me crazy, but I actually like the so-called "matte-ness" of Vader's ANH helmet; it's kinda cool. If you're looking for an in-universe explanation, then who's to say his helmet doesn't receive upgrades over the years? And maybe those upgrades differ slightly from each other in appearance. Or maybe he has different helmets for different purposes.

Or maybe--just maybe--there's no explanation for it all, in which case I still don't really care. It's not a big deal. It's a different movie, shot at a different time and by a crew with fewer resources and experience than the one that worked on its sequels. There is no issue with the costume, and none of the (brilliant) shots in which it appears need to be reshot.

Just my two cents =P

He also just walked through a battle area with smoke and various other kinds of particle debris in the air.  Dust sticks to anything and everything.

(C'mon - I'm sure there are some smart people around here who can see where I'm going with this.  Don't make me spell it out for you.)

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

The unavoidable fact is Vader is not played by Prowse in some of the key moments of the original trilogy and so few people noticed that Mark Hamill felt compelled to break the illusion.

Not knocking the ever lovely Mr Prowse but a few uses of an alternative actor in a suit will not break a special edition of these films and could positively enhance some PT edits (though I would prefer to see one of the concept suits dug out for that).

Yeah, I always just used that reasoning. It always seemed to make the most sense lol.

True. It's James Earl Jones who can't be replaced. I've never heard an impersonator and bought into it.

Yeah, when I was a kid I remember thinking Vader was moving up the ranks in the movies, in the first one he was a thug...working for Tarkin, in the next he led the mission to find Skywalker,....in the last he was at the Emperors beck and call...through the three movies he evolved, from rough to more refined.

At the end of the last of the three crap films he looked more refined than he did in ROTJ....it would have looked better if they changed his look more like McQuarrie's concepts

Vader should not be replaced....parts of the costume COULD be (and I don't think anyone would "riot" as it would be just a visual upgrade and not be changing the performance at all)

Yeah, well I'm not saying it's a good idea, I'm just saying there's a very simple solution to their conundrum.

Just came across these. ^^ Most impressive. For me, aside from the cape difference and the shiny/matte helmet I've aways had a tough time telling the difference between Vader's costume in the trilogy.

I used to be bothered by Vader looking a little rough in ANH and by his cape covering his upper breast plate. (I even made a comparison pic to show the difference which I've seen floating around on this forum) Now I don't mind - it is what it is. That said, I still wouldn't mind seeing a short proof of concept of a shiny helmet esbish looking Vader in AnH just for fun. :)

On a related note, GL really should have shown Vader looking more like his ANH version rather than the latter version.

Well if a scene like that was ever made that doesn't spoil the end of ESB where Vader tells luke he is his Father.

If in the scene if an officer tells Vader the name of the pilot is Luke SKYWALKER. People who watch the OT first will just think "ohhh i bet Vader is shocked to hear that name because 'Vader betrayed and murdered' Lukes father.

But those who know he is Luke's father already will know that Vader is shocked to hear that name because for the first time he will realize that Padme DID give birth.

The WHOLE saga shows us different IMPORTANT parts of Anakins/Vader life. (Being freed as slave, meeting the Jedi, getting married, turns into Vader, finds out Padme is dead, tells Luke he is his father, and redeemed himself at end)

Finding out he has a son is the first turning point in Vaders life. Thats a BIG event. That would be something that would be seen on screen.

We know in ESB that Vader is looking for 'Skywalker'. That didn't ruin the end of ESB just because he was already looking for Skywalker.

If done right that in my mind would be a great addition.

I never needed such a scene in 1980 because of this sort of thing (featuring a somewhat swishy Vader) :

I'm not seeing the 'rip'. I know its a puppet but I'm use to it.

It dosen't rip, but the fabric the puppet is made from ripples as it rolls over the crater edge. It's never really bothered me, I just see it as the creatures loose skin. But I'm pretty sure Ady had some plans for this..

Personally, I find this extremely trivial, and virtually unnoticeable. It could easily just be the worm's skin that ripples. Lots of Earth animals have somewhat loose skin in some areas that can be flabby (like people).

Changing Adywan to AD1 will make little if any noticeable difference (Sci-Fi to SyFy).

See-Threepio and C3PO are still the same characters and besides you are still the eye of the tornado.

You are the originator of the enterprise.

It's your work that got other people to volunteer to help and maybe get a bit overwrought when they don't get to play on your team. You are still doing the bulk of that work.

Adywan isn't your name anyway but it is a recognisable symbol for what you are trying to do. If someone finds an old article about Revisited, Adywan is the search term they will use to find out more.

If you start adjusting it to AD1 some people may not being able to find what you have done and if you keep your current screen name in articles to keep the search option open what's the point of the name change?

Personally I'd keep the name the way it is.

Maybe add Associates or something like it to the 'brand' to highlight that it isn't just you.

Besides you shouldn't propagate the illusion of professionalism.

You are an amateur in the true sense of the word.

You do what you do out of love of the craft and not for money.

You should wear that badge with pride especially in these greedy times.

Maybe United Amateurs would work as a satire of that other UA.

Nicely said there!

Regarding the recent talk of matte vs glossy helmets, I always personally liked the matte look in the first film myself. It seemed more like Vader was a warrior first and foremost, and has a bit of aging and battle scars on the armor to show it. In Empire and Jedi it looks like he never leaves his meditation chamber without getting out the shoe polish first.

I know that this would indeed cause rioting... but I have to say that watching Vader's ship land on Coruscant at the end of ANH, and seeing him on a landing platform speaking to someone of importance (no clue who) would be a really nice tie in and look pretty cool

"Lord Vader"

"Yes, commander?"

"We have the name of the Rebel Pilot responsible for the destruction of the Death Star"

"What is it (What is his name)?"

"Luke Skywalker, my lord. It appears that he may be the son of Anakin Skywalker."

"That... is impossible"

"I believed all traces of Skywalker were eliminated with the rest of the Jedi."

"As did I commander... as... did... I..."

Preferred Saga:
1/2: Hal9000
3: L8wrtr
4/5: Adywan
6-9: Hal9000

Awesome Vader is Awesome.

ANH Vader is the best Vader. Altering him would be a CRIME. Anyway, if this discussion continues I think we should move it over to the ANH:R thread.

^Nice to see that again but they do combine to make it a long journey to finding out who the boy was.

There is certainly a case for changing some suit elements in his first scene as there seems to be continuity issues. I think that is what is being proposed.

Anyway wrong thread.

I like the Idea, you basically made the person say what the Emperor said in ESB(2004-2011),+ with It being on Coruscant it will tie in 4-6 with episode 1-3 better.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Hey I've got an idea, I know its in the wrong thread but the past load of post are also, but in ANH Aunt Beru distinctly asked Luke to remind Uncle Owen to make sure the translator droid speaks bocce.....is there any way that someone could get luke to say this to Owen?
