Slaughter Of The Vampires (1962)

Italian gothic horror. Heaving bosoms.

Friday The 13th:The Final Chapter (1984)

Well, not the final film as it turned out after all.

The Hunger Games.

Having now seen the whole thing I can say it's terrible.

Big Lebowski, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmour

Drinking games were involved.

Unfortunately only got one hour into Big Lebowski before pitchers of white Russians were empty (yes, pitchers). The drinking games for that film are kind of ridiculous when you consider how often people say "man" and "the Dude" or whatever rules you are playing by.

Not a big Adam Sandler fan but those two early films of his have an inspired level of absurdity to them, especially Billy Madison. The actors in that film must have thought Adam Sandler was actually retarded to be trying to pass off his performance as entertainment. But the effect is so over-the-top and random that it works, and really well. I always thought this film was overrated when I was a kid but I appreciate the stupidity of it much more as an adult, ironically enough!

Also watched Jackie Brown (sober!), which always remains as good as the first time I watched it. Probably my favourite Tarrantino film.

Total Recall [2012]

wow..This thing is terrible, I wasn't expecting a masterpiece but it isn't even fun as a mindless action flick.

The movie tries to deviate from the earlier Verhoeven flick - ie: There's no Mars - but it's full of awkward references and nods to it..

Avoid it. Zero Balls.

Thriller about a lawyer's family being stalked by a revenge-seeking ex-con. Pretty good.

Finished the Firefly series and watched Serenity (3rd time for the latter, but first time for the former).  It was an interesting experience.  I'm just repeating myself, but the series had a lot going for it, if the darn plot weren't nearly always centered on glorified prostitution and other sexual plot points.  That was truly disappointing to me, but many other aspects were quite interesting, including the variety of characters.  My understanding is that the comics address the end of the Blue Hand dudes and the entrance of the Operative, but I wish the Blue Hands were addressed on screen.  Jubal Early was a very funny bad guy.

As for the movie, I loved it even more this time, though I'd always enjoyed it before.  It's not overly sexual, addresses many of the loose ends of the show, feels like a natural extension to the series (though I again emphasize that it stood well for someone who'd never seen the show), and was just plain exciting and well paced.  I really enjoyed it.

Watched Beyond with John Voigt.  An interesting movie about a guy who hunts down those who kidnap children.  Has a supernatural twist.  Not the greatest in the world, but I liked it more than I'd expect of a movie of this type.

Also saw Taken with Liam Neeson.  Similar vein as Beyond, I'm sure you all know, as Liam Neeson's teen daughter gets kidnapped and sold into sex slavery.  Dealt with the topic well and largely unoffensively (though I could have used less skin at a couple of points), and it was pretty cool to see Qui-Gon Jinn brilliantly infiltrate and so effectively disrupt this evil trade that truly exists.  I felt sorrow for none of his victims except a certain woman with a bullet in her arm...maybe that one was too far.  Still, excellent film.

There wasn't much actual sex in the Firefly universe though (sexual content).

Yes it had a courtesan type character and a few humble bar prostitutes but that's no different from Dune or almost any Western from the mid fifties onwards.

Sex happens, like religion happens.

I can't see why people get hung up about depictions of people who have religious views in science fiction and I can't see what is so wrong with characters having sexual morals and ethics different from the current norm.

It's not like Game Of Thrones which at times really does feel like the 'Soft Core With A Plot Show' at time.

I hear you, and I even can appreciate it as an effort to show a different cultural view.  But too often it was a central plot device, and there were many allusions.  I know, most people these days don't care.  I know, sex is how we all got here, and how my three children got here for that matter.  But when it becomes too central to the plot, shows too much flesh, and occupies too much of the humor, it begins to detract from the enjoyment for me.  Even if periodic implications were all there were, I wouldn't mind so much, but it just disappointed me to see such a focus on the topic.

Sincerely,

No offense: I do find it interesting that it annoys you when things glorify sex and what not, but you didn't really care about the glorified violence in things like Taken. Now, let me get this clear: I do not condone the glorification of either prostitution or violence, and I often times find a gratuitous amount of sex and guns/fighting/blood/etc. in many movies. Here's my point: I can still find a way to enjoy these movies. I don't let these factors get in the way. So what I'm trying to say is: I don't know, try to be less prude? It might let you enjoy movies more.

Just to be clear, I'm only trying to help.

Believe me, I don't like bloody movies either.  If something is stylistic, I guess I don't mind, but if it is graphic, that's where it bugs me.  And not that I don't find life sacred, but the sacredness of sex is cheapened at every turn IMO.  Those bad guys deserved to die.  But sex ought to be held in greater sanctity.

No offense taken :)

Hey, maybe we should start a thread on the topic! ;)

You have to go well out of your way to glorify prostitution (That telly show with Billy Piper tries it's best but it's almost as cartoonish as Sucker Punch and therefore can only be taken seriously by people too stupid to be interested in watching it).

It just has a few likable at times characters who are prostitutes and even the New Testament has one of those.

In light of Sunday's Breaking Bad episode, there's been discussion about how showing a breast or saying 'fuck' is taboo on cable television, but violence like that in this gif is okay. I'll link the gif but not embed it. In gif form it's not as bad, but the video was quite disturbing, especially with sound effects.

Gratuitous sexuality in TV/movies should be balanced with an equal amount of gratuitous body horror, IMO.

Dredd - (2012)

As a fairly young and kinda casual fan of the 2000 AD comics (my dad owns a rather large collection of 2000 AD comics from the 70s & 80s, as well as a bunch of Beano comics and the usual Marvel and DC stuff) I thought it was Pretty awesome. I remember being more of a fan of Dan Dare as a child and not particularly liking Judge Dredd, but I've now changed my mind. I liked that it was a much more gritter and more adult take on the character that the Stallone film. It also felt sort of like an 80s Paul Verhoeven film, like RoboCop. Very Well done.

8/10

Why hasn't anyone made a good Dan Dare film (or even a crap one)?

There was a CGI animated Dan Dare series several years ago, but I don't think it ever aired in the U.S. I think the company that did the FX for Babylon 5 made the show.

I have absolutely no idea. I would love to see a Dan Dare film. Not sure who would play Dare (Maybe James Purefoy), Digby, Sondar (Maybe Jason Issacs or Dominic West) or Peaboy though. David Warner would make a good Sir Hubert and Andy Serkis could make a good Mekon. Hopefully if Dredd is commercially successful it'll pave the way for other 2000 AD comics.

It used to air on a terrestrial channel called Channel 5. It was quite good, as well as a rather faithful adaptation of the original stories and concept. They also kept the same design elements from the original comics from the 50s. Although they did change Sondar into a cyborg, and Digby into a cockney.

P.S. On another note, why has no-one done a Dan Dare/Judge Dredd crossover comic?? It would be interesting to see how those two characters would interact.
