i really like the approach of jumbling TPM and AOTC into an Episode I, and ROTS into an Episode II or III. It gives the viewer the choice to have a clone wars movie as Ep II or a fan film as EP III.

Has anyone seen the dark ressurection films? I wonder if these could be cut/dubbed into something? An alternative EP I prequel-prequel possibly?

ALSO there is the possibility of having clone wars movies as EP I and EP II, with ROTS as EP III. I was wondering if you could create a PT just from CW episodes, but it might be a bit too WTF when you reach EPIV.

Yeah, do 2 episodes with TCW, and then let ANH be three... Yes, it's a WTF, but a welcomed one... Then the gap has to be explained by the classic films. Which it does. Just a thought.

What are the dark resurrection films?

They're the closest we get to Spaghetti Star Wars films. The lightsabre fights are unbelievable. And all the men have amazing beards.

I mean, why does it have to be 6 films?

this has been floated a few times before. my personal favourite solution is the elimination of episode numbers/subtitle all together, and using the Typographic titles of the films enstead of the 'STAR WARS' for the beginning of the crawl. then you can just compose a SAGA without the hassle of numbers.

I was already on board when you said "amazing beards" but wow. What I've seen is pretty impressive. What's the total runtime for it all?

Wow, that is pretty cool.  It's like Star Wars in Middle Earth.  Interesting stylistic choices.

Maybe we can convince these guys to remake the prequels.

However, to answer your previous question, Ben... If we were to get permission, I'm pretty a lot of those shots are usable.

Thanks for the Dark Resurrection stuff. It's absolutely fantastic and generally recognizes that Star Wars is space fantasy and should be treated that way.

I know the Clone Wars cartoon is considered better than the CGI show, but is it really more enjoyable (I've only seen bits and pieces of the cartoon as well)?  With such short episodes, there is hardly room for character development.  And I'm not a style of Samurai Jack animation.  Furthermore, the plots seem like the ridiculous stuff that sells these days, like the good guy has an overpowering weapon and dominates the battlefield, then the bad guys wait until the right moment when they've lost more men than they should have, but just to make their entrance dramatic, they unleash their even more amazing weapon...I dunno, what I saw was too weird for me.  Underwater lightsabers and blasters...just weird stuff.  Anyway, it seems that the CGI series has more opportunities going for it.

It's very stylized and not really supposed to be taken seriously, even less seriously than the prequels I'm sure. I love it for what it is, but it's not really supposed to cover the same ground as the CG show. It's intentionally Genndy Tartakovsky having Samurai Jack-style fun with explosions and swords.

That said I did try to include the cartoon kidnapping of Palpatine in my own edit, but all the people around me went "BUT IT'S A DIFFERENT STYLE" and I couldn't quite get the stuff off the DVDs.

There is a Clone Wars (Genndy version) fan edit that eliminates the more ridiculous aspects of the cartoon. I understand it was a very good edit. Point being, those very aspects that you despise about could mostly likely be cut.

Just stating that it does grant you some needed filler information such as a Grevious  entrance, and a Palpy kidnapping. However, who knows... Maybe the new show will fill in those gaps soon enough. One thing you have to say though, Genndy's Grevious is far more menacing than the one we got in ROTS or even the new series.

There are definitely some OTT elements in the cartoon, but in the end it's a personal favorite of mine. I watched before EpIII came out, and it filled in many gaps, i.e.

1. How did Anakin get those scars?

2. So what's the Clone Wars all about? (granted you learn this when you watch ROTS, but the cartoon nicely set up the main idea: jedi generals lead armies of clones against droids on many different planets)

3. We see Anakin knighted.

4. C3PO's armor change is mentioned.

5. Qui-Gon Jinn is not forgotten (he's in it! And Anakin is angry about his death)

6. Obi-Wandoes awesome things.

7. Anakin's a good pilot.

8. Mace Windu (and many other jedi) don't do nothing.

9. There are some actually funny moments.

10. We see the battle on Coruscant and Palpatine get captured.

11. We see Anakin add to his robotic arm.

12. We see Anakin and Obi-Wan board their fighters to go get Palpatine (leads right up to ROTS).

13. And, most importantly, we get to see Anakin and Obi-Wan be friends.

The only problem with the series is that Grievous is portrayed as a total bad ass - and he's not.

It probably would have helped had I watched it before seeing Ep III.  And I'm sure there is good stuff to it as well.  I just hope the newer series has a more grounded nature, and I really do like my idea of using the CGI series to create a new Ep II.  I think it could be done, once the series is over.  How does the new series match up with your list there?  Are the good qualities of the cartoon still present in the CGI?

I'm just thinking, and it might result in a very short movie if put this way, but...what if the Battle over Coruscant were placed closer to the end of ROTS instead of at the beginning?  What if the film could be edited in such a way that Anakin's tipping point was when he kills Dooku instead of his love for Padme?  It would likely take some amazing fixing up of the deleted scenes, but I can't help but wonder if it's possible.

I admit, that is interesting. Visually it makes a stronger climax. But I'm not sure how to make that work. How do you get them in the fighters, and in the air? Someone would have to produce some new material I'm thinking. I want to wrong. Make me believe that can work.

Hey, I've been doing a lot of speculating on ideas without thinking them through lately.  So it's very likely that it's not possible.  However, I've got my mind churning about a completely different structure to the film.  I'll let you know if I get it worked out.

If Dooku could be not only a rogue Jedi (and not a Sith) but also not the 'in your face' senior partner of the Confederacy it could be done.

His footage could be moved from Geonosis to the Jedi Temple.

His fight with Anakin from Episode 2 could be merged into his fight in Episode 3 making for one battle or the foe in the earlier match could be Grievous.

His final fight could replace Mace.

He turns after defending Palpatine who uses Dooku as proof of a Jedi conspiracy.

If Dooku was duped into backing the wrong horse Palpatine could build a conspiracy around him still acting as a current member of the Council.

It would take some nifty voice editing.

Shame Qui-Gon and Dooku can't be made to merge though.

Stupid Lucas.

Interesting thoughts.  I just came up with some of my own.  They are very rough and don't take pacing or anything like that into account.  I just wrote what came to me.  Not sure it could ever work.

  • Battle over Coruscant, Shaak Ti and other extended opening scenes, but remove any mention of Dooku or Palpatine.
  • Return from battle
  • Padme tells him she’s pregnant
  • Anakin is taken in as agent of the Emperor, “eyes and ears of the Republic.”  Not appointed to council.
  • Opportunity to catch Dooku (just a rogue Jedi), not Grievous during opera, and on Mustafar, not Utapau.
  • Seeds of Rebellion scenes.
  • Anakin learns that Emperor can help him with Padme, not from birth, but from Dooku (dreams about Dooku killing her, maybe Force lightning from Ep II and Padme screaming)
  • Anakin swears allegiance to save Padme.
  • Emperor orders Anakin (not Lord Vader) to take out Separatist leadership on Mustafar
  • Defeats Dooku, no Palpatine present, no Obi-Wan on Mustafar (change windows to show Mustafar exterior instead of space battle)
  • Then Anakin takes out Separatists leadership.
  • Palpatine gives some order to destroy Anakin by hologram to cloaked figure (who really is Anakin).
  • Obi-Wan talks to Padme so he can help Anakin.
  • Obi-Wan arrives on Mustafar.
  • “Anakin Skywalker is no more, my master,” by hologram to cloaked figure.
  • We see a scorched Anakin on the lava bank and Obi-Wan looking at his body.
  • He then pilots the ship away, obviously distraught.
  • Order 66.
  • Jedi temple is attacked by an armored Vader.
  • Yoda exile.
  • Padme gives birth.
  • Padme survives—Boleyn Girl
  • One twin goes to Lars homestead.

Make sure Emperor’s face is never damaged.

A few changes would need to be made to the OT to smooth out the wrinkles, as I've mentioned before, specifically removal of the line that Vader was Obi-Wan's pupil and anything related, as well as significant and lengthy flashback during ROTJ to fill in how Obi-Wan fought him, etc.

I really am not saying this is a solution.  These are just ideas that perhaps can be fleshed out.

I've actually played with the idea of the battle not being at the begining of ROTS... to make the battle last longer, and to give another structure to the movie, more puzzle like. Credits are to be given to Aalenfae too, with whom this brainstorming took place:

First of all, it needs to be said that this ideas took place not only as an effort to strenghten the movie but mainly to reinforce Anakin as a character with a mind and dramas of its own. So in this plot, it should be explicited in the scroll that he's left the Jedi Order, because he's married now, and maybe more, he's in service to the Republic as a chancellor/government/senate asistant and both jobs are ethically incompatible or something. I'd go with the married stuff, but both of them, even together could be sucessfully explained in the scroll.

The movie starts with a lone separatist shuttle flying by to a misterious dark planet, it enters the atmosphere. It's Utapau (Bob García actually DID this video, with utapau at night). We get introduced to grievous, but the orgiastic choral music is replaced by some mistery mood piece. The holo dialogue with Sidious should be altered.

The end of the war is near General, Count Dooku has kidnapped the chancellor over their capital, but we need you to lead te battle. After your return, you will send the leaders to Mustafar...

Or maybe: "I'll meet the leaders in mustafar to give shape to our new government"

Now that scene is setting up the structure of the movie, it presents us potencially every act that is to come. And it just recquires dialogue replacement with some good impersonator. This way, we won't get the feeling that the CSI is a faction that doesn't know what to do. And it certainly clarifies things, which is something the begining of ROTS is totaly lacking. While impressive, the current start of the movie is a mess of information, you can't process it, just swallow.

After this holochat, I'd cut to the Balcony scene, the cheesy one we all hate, I think it could work now. There's no baby reveal, the baby coming is a given fact, a natural fact that needs no "Anakin... I'm pregnant" stupid stuff. The exceptional situation with the Chancellor and the siege of Coruscant is presented from inside the planet now, in first person, and that first person is Anakin, who is in struggle about keeping his retirement or coming back, and maybe the dreams are what trigger anakin to return to the Order and help the republic.

Some things would acquire different meanings this way. Padme's stupid cry for them leaving to naboo and "leave everything else behind" is now under the crystal of a sieged city. And his pregnant woman and yet-to-be-born child is a strong cause to make him go to war. The exagerated sugar of the scene should be compensed by this fairwell sense, at a point.

Next scene should be Anakin meeting Obi Wan in the Jedi control room, we also got that scene, with holograms that could be replaced into schematics of the tactics to be applied in the battle.

Then, we shall need some aire, so cut to something else, more quiet maybe the rebellion scenes. It'd be curious to have the rebels meet while the Chancellor is captive, very figurative. The scene ends, and drums... the sun... camera pans down... the star destroyer and the battle of Coruscant.

---------------------------------------------------------

Other thing to be put here was to make the characters make their own decissions...Luke decides to go to Bespin, and the core of his drama is actually in making the good or bad decission, while in PT it's all destiny in the sens of greek drama, Anakin is constantly driven, and that's wrong. Little decissions can make big changes in our perceptions of characters. Here goes one, also with Aalenfae:

Anakin and ObiWan should chase Grievous after rescuing the Chancellor. No ray shields, it's not that they got caught, but that they took the decission to go face him. It's not a rescue mission anymore, it's a secret mission, with many objectives.

The way it is currently, it's like they are on the ship, they fall in the ray shields and since they're protagonists everything turns just fine when they face Grievous.

How to do this change?

Have Grievous say something about it, or maybe the battledroid, we got the security camera footage of them running through a corridor... then only the simple replacement of the line by the droid to "they're coming here" and Grievous saying something along the lines of "Skywaker, nice challenge" and voilá.

Cheers!

i think this idea is really interesting mithrandir

as oppose to following the grevious intro with the balcony scene, could it be followed by anakin's nightmare? at this point padme won't be pregnant, but then all of a sudden after the battle she will be. kind of the inescapable inevitable fate coming to play.
