Don't forget that when we made the change from VHS to DVD, we didn't have flat screen TVs with dedicated upscalers. That's not to say you don't have a valid point, but it's a little unfair to draw the conclusion that Blus aren't inherently that much better than DVDs.

I just wish there was some kind of audio commentary or someone to explain to me , that after 30 years why Han's Line in EMPIRE "You could use a good kiss!" was cut from the Blue Ray? I just wanna hear some kind of logical explanation as to how deleting that line ADDS anything or IMPROVES the quality of the movie?  it's like cutting out the punchline of the joke??

Does George really hate HAN SOLO that much that he needs to water down his character at every turn?

I just want to hear the rationale that went into making the decision to remove the line, because now all I hear is the gap where it used to be.

I hope this is a joke, or one hell of a audio remixing mistake!

This, coming after the Indiana Jones trilogy with no CGI improvements or dialog changes.

Lucas will forever be delusional and never satisfied with his movies.  I could give a flying fuck about the 3-D versions of the Saga.

I'm looking forward to seeing Indy in Blu in all its unaltered glory as well.

Looking at the charts, boy they aren't kidding when they say blu-ray sales are still relatively soft. Not for Star Wars, just in general. (The headline isn't is as great if you say "In it's first week Star Wars sells a fraction as many copies as the dvd of Beverly Hills Chihuahua!")

Yeah, and there's a significant portion of people who 1) don't own a Blu-ray player, 2) don't own an HD set, 3) already have the DVD set and are fine with that, 4) are kind of strapped these days. Regardless, there's a huge spin here in selling this as some massive success story. Yeah, it's definitely great news for a format that some people have stupidly compared to laserdisc and declared DOA. But people in general don't buy movies the like they did 5 - 10 years ago.

As Laserdisc had a healthy 20+ year run as a niche format, (and pioneered many things we now take for granted with DVD and Blu Ray today) that's actually a backhanded compliment in my book. ;)

Oh, I wasn't trying to knock laserdisc. I was a proud owner and supporter for many years. But it was a format that never properly marketed, and people could never seem to get over the awkward size. Totally ignorant, but that and the much higher price for them really hurt its chances.

has anyone backed up WMN on the line being cut? I'd bet it's similar reasoning to why he removed "you're lucky you don't taste very good," ie he doesn't like it when people mess with HIS vision. Aren't there numerous horror stories from Star Wars about how controlling he was with the actors whenever possible? If the line was improv he probably think it detracts from his original script.

laserdisc was great!  i dind't get one until late in the run (1995) but i was just happy that i didn't need to rewind movies anymore :)  and it wasn't really until progressive scan that I saw a big difference in dvd and laserdisc picture quality.  Up until then, the big advantage was size, price and extra features.

Even price wasn't so bad because I got 4 free movies up front, one of which was toy story! and i subscribed to that one club where you buy 3 movies and can get an additional 3 for free (forgot what it was called but you've seen the ads in the sunday paper). And there was one Blockbuster that rented out laserdiscs, so that was cool.

im not so sure if there is still a significant portion that doesn't own HDTV.  nobody sells CRTs ever since the analog cutoff a couple years ago.  just going off of anecdotal evidence, my whole building has blue light coming out of all the windows at night cuz everyone has a flat screen.  What have you guys seen?

And the prices for TVs and blu ray players have come down.  the discs themselves are still pricey, especially compared to DVDs that can be had for the single digits.

imk thinking people are getting more into streaming and just downloading to laptops.  DVD dind't really have that as competition, but blu ray does. are films going to have a napster problem? the music industry was caught off gaurd 10 years ago, maybe not so much the film industry.

anyway, its a great launch.  but im not so convinced that lucas has caught another generation that can easily provide him cash flow and can continue to do so.  Younger fans may like star wars PT, but its not a staple the way it OT was for generation X.  and they certainly will not be as loyal and unwavering the way many PT kool-aid drinkers are.

Kids that missed both the OT and the PT theatrical runs but are now learning about star wars for the first time from the Clone Wars show may like it a little more because they are truly the first ones that can follow the saga in the numerical order lucas wants with no pre-conceived notion or expectations.

But again, im not sure those kids will be attached to it in the long-term the way us 70s and 80s kids were.  it was no coincidence that the resurgence and re-launch of star wars came at a time when generation X entered the workforce.

Lucas may have his eyes set on newer generations, as so many people like to theorize - but he sure loves the discretionary income of our generation.

Do you have a full audio set up? If you're listening through stereo speakers then you won't hear all audio from certain channels. I remember watching LOTR: FOTR and there's a line from Sauron "Build me an army worthy of Mordor" which you can't hear through two channels.

I don't have the set, wouldn't even if I had the money, but from what I've seen of the screenshots I kinda hate AOTC's new color-timing. I've been scratching my head at why they changed it. ROTS looks exactly the same as before, color-wise. It's almost like they don't want those two movies to have the exact same look, so they changed one of them.

I've heard it mentioned that the old transfer of AOTC didn't have the exact same color-timing as the theatrical release either, but I prefer the look of the hdtv broadcast over this new teal-shifted job.

Also, I have to say, stuff from eps II and III sticks out like a sore thumb. At least Episode I was shot in the same format as the OT. Yeesh.

I would say your copy must be defective then, I would definitely return it if you are absolutely certain it is missing.

I just watched ESB and I can confirm without a doubt that the line IS infact still there, I made a point to look for it after reading here that it was missing.

I know it's on my set.....I just watched the scene.  I don't have surround sound but I use my T.V. speakers along with my 2 tower speakers and it came through good.

Maybe it's a bad disc.

After going back and forth on deciding weather to buy the set or not I finally did. I never bought the prequels on DVD and I wanted the special features. (I can somewhat enjoy the prequels)

I think the quality on these blu's are kinda horrible. I spot checked TPM, ESB and ROS. TPM was worse than I expected it to be, it mostly looks very soft, like someone had smeared something over the picture.

Empire while everything is slightly sharper than the DVD, still looks unimpressive, not only do the colours look like the DVD, you can definitely see frozen grain artifacts in scenes. Especially on Hoth, looks very bad.

Sith faired better overall, but I disagree with saying the transfer looks anywhere near as good as Avatar. All the composting with the actors looks much worse than I remember, they dont even look like they are really in the enviroments most of the time. Interior CG etc looks really bad and dated.

Overall the transfers should be far better than these. I will enjoy sifting through the special features though. Can you choose to watch the SD features without that border?

I am wondering if what we're seeing is their preparation for the 3D stuff coming.  Maybe it explains the use of the DNR.  EP 1 & 2 didn't fair as well as the rest did of the set when it comes to video quality for sure.

Author
Time

It might be. Having seen Avatar projected in digital 3D and IMAX 3D (70mm) , I must say that grain is pretty distracting in a 3D presentation, as it looks quite unnatural on 3D surfaces. This shouldn't affect the 2D release though! And if it does, it is wrong.

Based on the sample size of my household, Gears 3 is outselling the Star Wars blu-rays 1-0.

Yes, well, that is just YOUR household though :(.

Now I do not condone Lucas actions towards the originals, but why should he give a shit about the originals when this boxset sold well enough to keep the Lucasfilm gravy train rolling

Exactly. The majority of people don't care. It's like spitting a fire.

But what we're doing here is still important.

It doesn't matter if it's important, it matters if it does anything. And it obviously doesn't.

Wow, thanks for posting those stats! Our people have DEFINITELY made a statement that WILL be heard at LFL. There's no way they can ignore us now.

What do these "stats" indicate? Sales have dropped because it's a new format, maybe a few more people care, so in 100 years we'll have it? They can ignore us all they like until they don't make any money, and that'll be the 12th of never.

Plus, since when has monetary returns meant anything about quality, or people's attitude towards something? "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was one of the highest-grossing films of all time, but it's also one of the shittiest and universally-reviled movies of all time.

And it still got the sequels green-lit and kept the franchise going. It doesn't matter what it says about the quality of the product, what matters is what it says about the future, and what it says is that people will buy anything with STAR WARS on the package.

Regardless, there's a huge spin here in selling this as some massive success story

Um, a broken record doesn't qualify as a big success?

Well said everyone! What I have noticed, is that FINALLY there are several articles and blog entries about the changes and how bad they are, where's the originals, etc. That speaks volumes.

The only thing that talks here is the money, and it has spoken.

That's an important step that we have taken, and I hope we keep on walking!

Right off the edge of a cliff.

More have realized the crime against culture and history here.

Just because they know is no guarantee they care, and even if they do, like I said, it probably doesn't mean much.

I sincerely hope we are closer to getting the OOT.

I sincerely hope I win the lottery. Wish in one hand...

yeah had a proper listen to it today, with the surround on, and it is there,  it just doesn't seem as prominent as it used to

Dunno how your respective systems handle surround downmixing, but I'm quite certain I heard it, and I'm just getting stereo audio from my BD player via my TV.

If only I could somehow lose the "NOOOOO" like you're apparently losing "You could use a good kiss!", I'd be content!

In the case of both my TV Speakers AND my computer speakers (both of which are pretty old), there are instances where one speaker stops working, leaving the other speaker being the only one to work.  Some of the audio I listen to suffers from this, especially those that are heavy on stereo panning.

Han's "You could use a good kiss!" goes off into the left channel, so maybe his left channel stopped working.  Not to say that it's definitely the problem, and he's more than likely using a new-ish HDTV, but I'm just throwing my experience out there.
