Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!) — Page 284

I remember when Terminator came out, and blu-ray.com was so critical about it, particularly the picture quality.  I think they gave it 3 stars.  Why didn't they use the "it has problems but hey, it's Terminator on blu ray!" argument for that?

Because Terminator fans aren't so self-loathing like SW fans who need to rationalize the purchase of every subpar product Lucas puts out despite their dissatisfaction with obvious flaws and poor business tactics.

It's really quite sad to consider the hold he has on the SW fanbase. We're sheep.

I'll admit, I love The Terminator almost as much as I love a lot of the SW films. But I didn't buy the Terminator Blu-ray because the picture quality is only a mild improvement over the last DVD. I hope they do another one sometime soon. And I'm not buying the SW set for the same reason. Do it right or save your money.

Also no original soundtrack.

The DVD had the original mono, did they get rid of that for the BD?? That would be awful, I can't stand that remixed mess half the time. I think the only place the new 5.1 was superior was when the tanker truck explodes.

One thing that has surprised me is that there have been no TV spots advertising the Blu-ray set on TV here in the UK and it comes out on Monday.

I don't think I have seen any here in the US either now that you mention it.

I've seen a ton of them here lately, and I don't even have a TV. Seems like they're on every commercial break in the cafeteria or the gym.

It's funny, because the volume is always way low on the TVs around campus, but I can always hear an AT-AT firing, or a lightsaber igniting and my head immediately snaps up to look for the source.

No, no mono on the blu-ray.

I read somewhere that a new transfer was completed or partially completed but MGM isn't exactly swimming in money these days to make Terminator a priority.

You can get the blu-ray for less than $10 but I'll wait. I've still got my DVD.

Van Ling said it was like pulling teeth just getting the studio to include the mono on that dvd (and he said the blu was cranked out without it and that it'll be a whole big thing again next time).

All these supposedly discerning reviewers giving Star Wars a soft pass are probably just worried about appearing too highbrow and criterion-y for their site traffic.

But one interesting thing that i spotted on the Utapau animatic sequence is General grievous. Now was it originally intended  to be Darth Maul because you can clearly see that it is him behind the mask?

This right here literally made me stop and say "Whoa..." that would have been a really cool plot point, and it kinda fits with the "Visionaries" idea of a cyborg Maul. Shame it wasn't gone through with. Talk about rhyming. =P

I wonder where KenKraly is now. It is the same shoddy transfer and the collars aren't fixed and in 90% of cases neither are the lightsabres :-)

Nice to see that shot is fixed. Seeing the wooden pylons under the sail barge set was out of place :)

I also noticed that they fixed a glitch in AOTC. After we see the shot when the two guys are talking to the queen in the ship, the following shot has a fly by in the clouds. The last frame of it had one fog layer off in the HDTVs.

Its pretty bad the the fake shaking camera effect glitch is still unfixed (why you took so long scene) You can see the black bars next to obi and anakin :/

The thing I'm most pissed off about when it comes to Boba Fett (besides the shitty backstory they made for him in AOTC, which I refuse to accept as canon when the short story "The Last One Standing" was so much better), is the voice change. I HATE the new voiceover by Temura Morrison - he sounds bored and monotonous. Jason Wingreen's voiceover was by far more badass. Fett only had four lines, but they sounded so f*cking cool because of Jason Wingreen.

Since I'm something of a Jango apologist (although in my crazy personal universe, Jango is at least not Boba's biological father and Boba sounds like Wingreen), I'll jump in and say that those lines sound like shit because they were recorded from over the phone with Morrison from New Zealand.

Like we saw with the PT, it's really hard to act when you don't have anything to react to, I'm sure the phone call went something like this:

*Temura Morrison is watching football on TV in his PJs with his house slippers on and a mug of coffee, Lucasfilm sound guys call up,*

"Hey, Tem. We need you to say these lines... okay, perfect, that'll do. Have a nice day."

And then they just stuck them in the film, no need to add distortion or anything since they got them from a phone, right?!

Strange. They still look wooden set remains there.

If you cant show it that are pipes or machinery then dont show it at all. It breaks the illusion. Or just fix them in post :D

thanks for the model reference tho. I might redo some mockups :)

Haha, the same exact thing happens with me...I imagine it happens to a lot of SW fans!

They just re-released it in a digibook edition with no original mono mix. For this reason, I didn't get it and kept my DVD. Does anhyone know if the digibook edition is the picture quality as the first release?

...The old "making of.." docs are terrible quality. They are plagued with horrendous mpeg1/2 compression and other digital artefacts and then the interlacing issues turn the picture into a line-fest when there is the slightest motion.  It looks like watching an old VCD but with slightly sharper picture.

As Adywan reported the vintage documentaries seems of bad quality.

How do they compare to the Laserdisc/VHS preservations that guys did from those Making Ofs?

Can somebody post screenshots?

Is William Conrad the narrator of the first Making Of?

But if you read most major reviews the PQ is pristine with no color timing issues, wrong lightsabers, crushed blacks. It's SW on blu, baby! Anybody who says it's less is just a h8r.

Tomorrow the Blurays come out, and this will be the first big SW release that I am not a part of.  Pretty sad, that i have to be a martyr towards these movies, but I would honestly feel dirty if I went out and bought the Bluray set and just keep thinking Lucas is laughing at me that I caved in again.

It should have never came to this, as he had a person like me for life.
