STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW — Page 917

I was recently going to mention this particularly unfortunate ESB fact that I only discovered several days ago, but the thread was temporarily 'locked' due to shennanigans at the time, lol.

Anyway, all this recent talk of AT-ATs has reminded me to bring it up.  While a lot of you will know about this I'm sure, it's something that I've never picked up on over the years personally.  But I happened to be reading the current last page (48) of Jambe Davdar's 'Building Empire' edit thread, where this quote by Joe Johnston from 'Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays' was briefly mentioned -

"Well, the big thing that didn't end up in The Empire Strikes Back was the two-legged walker, but it did end up in Jedi.  You get a brief glance of it in Empire, but there was a shot, a POV from one of the snowpeeders; the speeder is attacking the walker and passes right over it's head.  Unfortunately at the very end, we were under a deadline and were literally up all night shooting this scene.  Someone didn't tighten up the backing of the painted sky, and no one noticed it.  The next day in the dailies, you could see the background slip, and it slipped about eight inches half-way through the shot...It just fell, which completely ruined the shot."

A little more on this can be read here - http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/index.php?categoryid=10&p2_articleid=392

So it seems that due to sheer bad luck (and the lack of CGI being around to salvage it, at the time), that we were denied seeing what sounds like a really neat intended shot...which would have managed to give the impression of the AT-ST being involved in the Hoth battle a bit more than we ended up with...

But due to the existing very brief, incongruous appearance of the current AT-ST in ESB, adywan has decided that he's going to remove it altogether, and focus on the AT-ATs alone in his edit.  That's his own preference, but it's just a pity that this additional shot of the AT-ST being fired at through the viewpoint of the snowpeeder's cockpit didn't end up featuring in the original to begin with, if things had worked out.  Personally, I'd have really liked to have seen the AT-ST vehicle being more involved in the Hoth battle with that shot , and it's certainly an out-take that would make a neat extra, if it were to be included on the Blu-ray set...although that's probably too much to hope for.  Dammit!

Indeed vaderios, ESB:Revisited's final tweaked AT-AT battle is bound to make up for any missing AT-ST shots, at the end of the day, as far as I'm concerned.

Hope to finally get around to those 'Dagobah' thoughts soon, by the way. :)

How were you able to change your username? I didn't think that was possible.

Just a few more things to do to the AT-AT model and it will be ready for painting.

Now if only THIS PROJECT had already been completed, it would have saved me a lot of work ;)

It was a shame that more AT-ST shots weren't included into the hoth battle and that none will feature in ESB:R, but i would rather have no AT-ST's than have ones that miraculously disappear between shots

What's funny is how out of place the AT-STs look on the Endor moon.

It is so obvious that they weren't built for that terrain, but ILM wasn't going to give us something totally new, well, that is unless you count speeder bikes.

What makes you say that?  I thought given the denseness of the forest that they were a logical alternative to something as big as the walkers.

Hopefully once Ady is finished someone will build, animate and sympathetically return a Snow AT-ST back into the battle without the issues that Ady can't work around.

The Scout Walker was one of the key wow moments of my first viewing of the film, removing it feels like removing the spinning TIE from the asteroid sequence.

I had no option (I didn't have a Time Machine in 1980).

I liked that it was there because it meant that I didn't feel bad for playing with my AT-ST toy in the snow (yes, I was that much of a stickler for continuity, even from childhood). But in the continuity of the film, they're just too randomly placed.

I'll agree that continuity-wise its a real problem, but I always did love seeing it there and i think its a real shame that more shots of it weren't included which might have swayed Ady in the opposite direction and made keeping it and adding to its presence a much easier job

The only way Ady could do it would be by making a Hoth style AT-ST and filming it (and here's the really tricky bit) moving in proper relation to the movements of the AT-ATs.

That would either mean many moons of painful stop motion (more than the original crew did on the original model) or building a mechanical one.

Maybe one day but I can see why Ady can't pull of this particular miracle.

I'm sure I won't miss it overly....but I just always liked that it was there (the whole point of having a scout walker is to support and help the full size ones so it kinda made sense to me to see them working together) But it DID always bother me that things you saw in one shot didnt follow into the next, and I totally understand why you're dropping it. Just wish ILM had of had time to get a few more shots in there, that way it might have been feasible to include it. Not a huge deal.....moving on

They just seem like they would have trouble getting through a dense forest.

They seem more like they were made for snow or sand. Flat and somewhat more stable surfaces.

Then again, the Ewoks wouldn't have had much luck trying to trip up or bash between 2 logs an all terrain transport like this (you know... something that was actually ALL terrain... and actually transported something... you know, other than 2 drivers):

Speaking of which, interesting link 1 and link 2!

The AT-ST doesn't make much sense anywhere, but makes more sense in the wide open snowfields than the cramped forest. :p

Yeah, with repulser craft like snow or landspeeders why design an easily flawed 'chicken walker', just sneeze and it falls over.

Yep. :p The main reason is because they look cool, of course. It reminds me of how people say 'why didn't they just fly their speeder bikes above the trees in Jedi?' Because it wouldn't be cool or exciting. ;)

HaHa yeah, they do look cool, thats the main thing with SW...fantastic unbelievable looking style...but if you take time to analyse some wacky ideas too.
