I was recently going to mention this particularly unfortunate ESB fact that I only discovered several days ago, but the thread was temporarily 'locked' due to shennanigans at the time, lol.
Anyway, all this recent talk of AT-ATs has reminded me to bring it up. While a lot of you will know about this I'm sure, it's something that I've never picked up on over the years personally. But I happened to be reading the current last page (48) of Jambe Davdar's 'Building Empire' edit thread, where this quote by Joe Johnston from 'Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays' was briefly mentioned -
"Well, the big thing that didn't end up in The Empire Strikes Back was the two-legged walker, but it did end up in Jedi. You get a brief glance of it in Empire, but there was a shot, a POV from one of the snowpeeders; the speeder is attacking the walker and passes right over it's head. Unfortunately at the very end, we were under a deadline and were literally up all night shooting this scene. Someone didn't tighten up the backing of the painted sky, and no one noticed it. The next day in the dailies, you could see the background slip, and it slipped about eight inches half-way through the shot...It just fell, which completely ruined the shot."
A little more on this can be read here - http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/index.php?categoryid=10&p2_articleid=392
So it seems that due to sheer bad luck (and the lack of CGI being around to salvage it, at the time), that we were denied seeing what sounds like a really neat intended shot...which would have managed to give the impression of the AT-ST being involved in the Hoth battle a bit more than we ended up with...
But due to the existing very brief, incongruous appearance of the current AT-ST in ESB, adywan has decided that he's going to remove it altogether, and focus on the AT-ATs alone in his edit. That's his own preference, but it's just a pity that this additional shot of the AT-ST being fired at through the viewpoint of the snowpeeder's cockpit didn't end up featuring in the original to begin with, if things had worked out. Personally, I'd have really liked to have seen the AT-ST vehicle being more involved in the Hoth battle with that shot , and it's certainly an out-take that would make a neat extra, if it were to be included on the Blu-ray set...although that's probably too much to hope for. Dammit!
