Your heart's in the right place, but unfortunately, 90% of 16mm prints made before 1982 were on Eastman stock and have faded over time.  See P. G. reel #2 for a typical reproduction of what a 30ish year-old 16mm film print looks like these days.   Reels 1 and 3 of the Puggo GRANDE were very well preserved, judging from their color and contrast, (they may have even been Eastman LPP, a much better "low fade" film stock) but they had faded a bit as well and a true representation of brand new prints from 1977 are probably gone forever.

I understand. I even want to use the Plugo Grande for a possible grindhouse fanedit of SW! ;)

Once again I LOVE the color correction by Adywan, I just thought a color correction from the 16mm print would be easier to match the real original colors than use the 2004 DVD as a basis. But I guess I was wong.

I did not see the Puggo grande yet. I'm waiting for V3. :)

Just a silly question:

I think that Adywan did a color correction of the movie based on the 2004 DVD. I mean he changed the 2004 colors with filters and things like that, right?

He did a GREAT job, but now that we almost have a 16mm restored dvd version (thanks to Puggo), can't we use the colors of the Puggo grande on 95% of the scenes of Star Wars revisted? Perhaps even on a HD version of SW?

....

Tell me if it's stupid or not.

I won't say it's stupid, because it's actually rather clever.  Unfortunately, the 16mm film was quite comprimised (faded, red-shifted, etc.) and would make a lousy source for color-correcting anything.

Nice to see your cover idea there, rsortor! That old box is great! :) I would love to see someone take that pic and run with the idea. There's a particular program a lot of people use for making DVD covers, but I forget what it's called...

Thanks Ripplin!  The film box actually holds an old TV print of HERCULES UNCHAINED.  I made the fake label myself and customized it with some coffee & soy sauce.  A real print of STAR WARS would be out of my price range!  So in case anyone was fooled by the label and might be wondering, I'm not "Jaxxon," the one who supplied Puggo with the prints..

Version 3 of the Puggo Grande has just been certified by MoveAlong as A-O-K.  So I will be burning replacement disks today and tomorrow, and sending them out on Monday.  Finally!

By the way, those of you receiving replacement disks will be able to tell the difference between the two, because version 3 will have a tiny JarJar next to Puggo in the corner.

1gb?

The DVD is nearly full - about 4.5 gb.  Not sure what was just put up, I don't have anything to do with that.

Uh, the DVD is still uploading. It is not 1gb.

yeah I saw that now, I'm pretty new to newsgroups.

It's cool. Looks like the upload is about half way done. Should be very nice.

Um, it takes just a little while to upload over 4GB of data. I was merely stating that the upload had begun. Should be finished shortly. When the par files start showing up, then you know it's almost done.

Any chance of this popping up on torrents in the coming days?

I'm quite interested in this.  For a while I thought I couldn't get onto newsgroups.  I just found out that I can, but apparently my provider has really bad retention, because this was only just uploaded and it's only showing back to part 84.  *headdesk*  I could sure use a torrent also.

I just watched a few minutes of it.(d/l from a.b.starwars) Very decent looking, better than I thought it would be. But is the aspect ratio correct? I had thicker black bars than usual on my 32" WS TV.

The bottom of the print Puggo telecined was severely cropped. Therefore the black bars have to be bigger to maintain proper AR.

IIRC, the AR for this is closer to 2.75:1 than the 2.39:1 we're used to.  (For comparison, Ben-Hur is 2.76:1.)

Giganews and binsearch.info state all uploaded files 100% complete. So anyone getting incomplete files, the problem is with your newsgroup provider. A reminder to people, ISP file retention sucks. You have to pay for a premium provider to download anything as large as a DVD.

On another note... To the people who have this now, didn't Puggo do an amazing job? Considering all the work necessary, this is up there with the best of the fan projects IMHO. Bravo!

My old ISP (Charter) actually had pretty decent file retention. But now I've moved and changed ISPs and, alas, no more usenet for me :(. So I suppose I'll wait to see this on torrents or even rapidshare. Looking forward to it!
