FF, since this is your project after all, do you have any suggestions or requests in regards to the cover?  A different text block on the back maybe?  (I made mine up mostly from scratch, and I'm not sure if I'm happy with it)

And thank you for that scan, tmpfan - it'll work beautifully.

The cover look great so far.  Feel free to do whatever you feel is best.  I would not even mind alternate versions of covers.

Hmmmm ... well I was just able to watch the original iteration of FanFiltration's ST-TMP:SLV (how's that for a lotta letters) last night for the first time, and I see all the stuff I noticed (and more) has been reported. So I guess I'll just say that as it was, it was really cool, the picture and sound looked and sounded great on the 42" TV in my bedroom, I really enjoyed the audio interviews and the publicity photos. So, as a version 1.0, it was excellent and i can't wait for ST-TMP:SLV 2.0!

Also, this advance poster for the movie from late '78/early '79 would make a great sleeve if anyone can find it at an appropriate resolution.

Thanks for the review.  The new version should be uploaded soon.  I'm still waiting on my buddy to reroute the menus and chapters.

Great news!  By the way, any updates on fixing that "missing footage" problem, or including the entire scene in fullscreen as a short bonus feature?  I'd hate to have a restoration that was missing a couple of shots...  :-(

We could make the shot an easter egg....

lol ... that works too.  :-)

Is it just one solitary shot?  Personally, I'd like to see the easter egg, or bonus scene, or whatever, have at least *some* of the surrounding footage as well -- just for context's sake.  Thatway, you can watch it and say "oh, okay, that's how the scene originally went" ... instead of "wait, what was that random shot all about and where did it fit?"

Then again, it's not my project. ;-)

Looking forward to seeing which way you decide to go with it ... thanks for the reply!

What missing footage are we talking about again?

Good question :)

If you work backwards thru the thread you'll find it.  It's a shot or two, maybe one scene, that he could only find in full screen form, not widescreen, so it's only partly missing.

Oh, dear. Fanfiltration, you just got new competition from the BluRay edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

ST:TMP BluRay

It seems that 2 and 4 were NOT the only editions Lowry Digital restored on their high-powered Macs.

As I have noted - I'm glad there's finally some decent TMP pictures online somewhere.

I personally do not look at this as a competition, because hands down the Blu-ray will look and sound a 100 times better, these are 2 different things.

Well, obviously it's not competition because this version isn't for sale! And a film looking 100x better on BluRay is sort of inaccurate since restoration and remastering work have been done on TMP, where no such effort was made on the Director's Edition (It's still fudge ugly). The way the film is looking on BluRay certainly surpassed even my expectations.

Does anyone see a problem just after the "Directed by" credits, and just before the cloud fades in?

I don't have the first version on my drive  anymore...

I just looked at it a moment ago and all I could spot was a tiny white scratch at the bottom left of the frame. Nothing too major since dirt and scratches abound in the transfer.

Is there something else that you think might be wrong with it? Audio or transition wise?

I'm going to bump this just for the sake of attention.

Any new progress Fan Filtration?

Alright, it might be too late for this, but I just had a thought and felt I should suggest it, just in case.  Hell, maybe this is how you did it to begin with.

Anyway, I recently downloaded, through Pirate Bay, a very nice-looking 720p Blu-Ray rip of TMP.  I started watching it, but stopped for several reasons - one, all subtitles, including Klingon and Vulcan, are included in the English subtitle channel, requiring it to be turned on and off as needed, which irritates me; second, the primary audio track is Russian stereo, though the secondary is English 5.1 (it's just slightly annoying); and third, I'm encoding video and downloading torrents all at once, so VLC started stuttering hard not 10 minutes into the movie.

So I decided to pop in my Director's Edition DVD instead, which I assume you used as a starting point for this project.

My God what an awful transfer.

Now, since there's been a lot of Director's Edition effects that were noted as accidentally being left in Version 1 of your preservation, FF, and the DE transfer is terrible to begin with.  My suggestion is, basically (don't shoot me, please!) - start over, using the very good Blu-Ray transfer as the backbone (this would, unfortunately, require subtitles to be added manually), and adding in the additional shots as needed.  This would make the transfer much better throughout, and would eliminate (hopefully) all of the Director's Edition effects, including ones that may have been missed.  It also uses the original, no-star-background credits, and the blank-screen overture instead of the Director's Edition credits.

There's a controversy over DNR being applied to the Blu-Ray release, but it isn't noticeable at all upon conversion to standard def (since most Blu-Ray DNR controversies stem from the studios using the exact same DNR levels they did for DVD, it's just that the higher resolution makes it noticeable).

I honestly don't expect you to do this, since it would require starting over from scratch, but I think the overall benefits outweigh the hassle.  Then again, you've already gone through so much hassle with this project that I wouldn't blame you in the slightest if your response was "Fuck off, I'm not doing that."  Just a thought I had, and I would have regretted not bringing it up.

--edit--

As a side-note, I'm strongly considering using this as a base to create a Theatrical Cut DVD preservation, since many don't have Blu-Ray players or the capability to watch HD MKV files on their computers.  I think a 3-disc set with that, the Director's Edition, and your Special Longer Edition preservation would be absolutely perfect!  Does anyone know if the theatrical mono/stereo mix for the film is available anywhere (I assume the Blu-Ray's 5.1 mix is new)?

I thought about suggesting the same thing, it seems starting with the director's cut and removing every change one by one is a very backwards way of doing things and will lead to noticable changes in quality. Surely it is preferable to use the theatrical cut as the main source and use other sources only where necessary but I do realise that when this was started the theatrical cut was not available in such high quality.

Of the 12 extra minutes (i.e. 12 more than the theatrical cut) how much is made up of scenes which can only be found in the director's cut? and how much is from the deleted scenes?

The new Blu-ray transfer has also been released on DVD (at least in region 2 it has) but I don't know if it has the original sound mix.

Yes the uk gets all the theatrical cuts on dvd and the us only got the trilogy set, lame.  Since i don't have blu ray i'll need to import trek VI and the motion picture for the theatrical versions on dvd.  II III And IV are on dvd here.  I would not waste the money importing trek V,lol.

Why are they forcing us to buy into blu ray here in the states when in the uk you have a choice of formats?

I hate pal speedup though there has to be an ntsc release somewhere if not that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

Just found the best solution for myself though i won't be able to afford it for a while.  Buy the japan region 2 1-6 box.  Costs a whopping 166 bucks versus the almost hundred dollar UK set.

It is rediculous considering for under a hundred bucks on amazon you can get the entire blu ray set.
