I LOVE Harlan's stories. Especially "Repent Harlequin, Said the Ticktockman"... In fact, any of the "Deathbird Stories" are really, really good. "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs", "Basilisk"...

He repeatedly commits the ultimate sin of comma-splicing, but screw conformity. He's the Man... Haha...

My first brush with Mr. Ellison is when he did the opening narration for the first season of Nickelodeon's Space Cases. Other than that, I'm a huge fan of the Star Trek episode "City on the Edge of Forever" even though it strongly deviates from Ellison's original script.

There is no lingerie in space…

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

i am only a fan of his script for city on the edge of forever from star trek tos.

but since he's now a star trek basher and all around jerk i will not buy a single book he publishes, he goes to fan conventions and bad mouths roddenberry.

He also seems to have the biggest ego out of all living sci fi or SF authors.

I also think Orson Scott Card is a better writer, to each his own i suspose, lol

I've never heard him bad mouth Rodenberry, but he did know him personally, so I guess that gives him the cred at least to bad mouth him, more than someone who didn't know him.

Star Trek is worthy of bashing. The original series was fantastic, however the spin-offs blew cheese and lead to generations of people dressing like Klingons and living with their parents until they're 40.

I don't believe Ellison has an ego, just that he has a low tolerance for b.s., like fans who track down the objects of their affection in bathrooms and hound them for autographs or people who post copyrighted material on USENet, etc.

I LOVE Ellison, and what are you talking about that he has no ego? The man is a wonderful egoist in the best way possible. Thanks for that link to the documentary, I hadn't heard of it, but its about time someone did one.

One of our last greats for sure.

I only recently started reading his stuff. Picked up Strange Wine about 3 years ago, but never read it until about a year back. Got the 50 year Essential Ellison shortly thereafter and haven't put it down yet. LOVE his stuff. Ticktockman and Whipped Dogs are my favorites thus far. I also enjoy his non-fiction essays, especially Valerie: A True Memoir. His politics are too left for me, but he's pretty even-handed which I can appreciate. He says what he means and means what he says. I'll be picking up the dvd of Sharp Teeth whenever it's available. I'd also like to get a complete bibliography so I can start creating a check list.

True. There aren't many like him left. Neil Gaiman springs to mind as someone of his caliber, though not cut from the same cloth. Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury, the list dwindles. The giants have almost all gone...
