It doesn’t necessarily contradict anything. The leaving ship symbolizes that “they left” but maybe they just went away to some other part of Jakku or maybe they went to the “drinking planet” and later came back poor and died. Who knows. But it’s an interesting discussion and there are many ways to handle this, of course.

Haha, I love the idea of there being a drinking planet. Maybe they went partying on Canto Bight and was sent back broke.

You’re right that it doesn’t necessarily contradict anything. Like you said, maybe there is some cantina on the other side of Jakku that they went to. But I think any answer is going to feel a little convoluted, because it seems like a blatant misdirect or. Or, more likely, the two directors of these films have two different ideas about her parents.

As I’ve said, I love the fact she is a nobody, I was hoping as much going into the movie. I just wish that Rian would’ve at least tried to make it line up a little more with the information we’re given in TFA. Maybe Kylo Ren could’ve said they sold her to get off Jakku. They still could’ve been drunks who died in a pauper’s grave, but on another planet.

Though I guess Star Wars isn’t unfamiliar with convoluted explanations.

And it’s possible JJ could reveal something else in IX. Jarbear, you make a good point that not only could Kylo be an unreliable source, but the vision that had could’ve been a false one made by Snoke, since he bridged their minds and wanted them to think they could turn each other. At this point though I’d rather they stick to their guns than change it. For the story go, “Does she have some special origin. Nope, she’s a nobody. Wait, just kidding, she’s a somebody!” would feel like really lazy storytelling, in my opinion. JJ could get away with it I guess, but I hope he doesn’t.

Maybe Kylo Ren could’ve said they sold her to get off Jakku.

Doesn’t really have the same ring to it. He was trying to make her feel worthless in order to get her to join him (break her down to build himself up), so I feel like “drinking money” fits fine here. It doesn’t have to be 100% truthful.

Plus… What was it Obi-wan said in the original film…? The idea that characters have to give 100% factual information is kind of silly.

Just a quick mention that Movie-Screencaps has added TLJ to it’s extensive screenshot library recently. I’ve always found it helpful for locating various scenes and shots at a glance, when working out potential SW cutlists for myself, and it may be useful for others around here too.

So here’s the link to it’s SW section - https://starwarsscreencaps.com

Ben Solo being like Ben Kenobi? Ben Solo is living up to his Uncle & Grandpa’s mentor very nicely.

I think it is easy to assume he is not being completely truthful, he had an agenda.

I agree with Handman. The flow of the scene and acting by Adam Driver work too well to cut those lines in my opinion. But I can definitely see the “less is more” approach.

Does anyone here have an audio rip of the isolated score or could someone point me in the right direction? I want to try and add this option to my fanedit.

Just learned about him from Jeremy on Geeks & Gamers last night as well. He looks like he’s doing a great job and it will be cool to see his edits!

Had some more thoughts after watching an edit:

  • Going in to TLJ I felt that guilt over Kylo Ren was sufficient motivation for Luke to self-exile. That was how Han explained it, and there wasn’t really any need for more. He doesn’t need to hate the Jedi or think that they should end, he could just think that he’s not a good enough teacher and that further pupils would turn to the dark side. The basic structure of this is already in the movie with him being concerned about Rey (“you didn’t even stop yourself,” Rey hanging out with Kylo, Rey going to the dark side hole, Rey lacking restraint with the saber) Rey saying “Kylo failed you, I won’t,” and Yoda telling him about failure. No late night attacks, lying, or book burning required either.

  • The deleted scene with the “raid”/party in the caretaker village could be re-purposed to teach the complete opposite lesson; instead of teaching Rey that the Jedi suck because they stop you from making interventions, he could just be giving her the straightforward lesson the Jedi intended, but in a sarcastic mocking trickster way like Yoda. Or, maybe it’s a metaphor to show Rey why he stays on the planet and doesn’t intervene in the war.

  • Aside from the part when he actually goes with torch in hand, Luke is genuinely concerned with actually keeping the Jedi traditions alive: he carefully folds his robes, describes himself as part of the religion, and speaks with reverence about the ancient Jedi texts. It’s possible that his motivation for exile could be to simply protect and watch over these teachings and make sure that the First Order doesn’t destroy them. He’d like to get away and all, but he’s just one man… he slips into the complacency that he had when he was younger (“it’s all so far away from here.”) Han being killed and Leia being threatened could easily rouse him out of it without Rey having to follow him all over the island and pester him. The projection could be a way for him to stay on the island and watch over it while still helping.

  • Since any of these changes would cut out a substantial chunk of TLJ they’d probably be best implemented in a 2-in-1 edit.

  • Maybe he genuinely didn’t know that the situation with the First Order was so serious and figured that the Republic could handle it. He could be willing to help from the start and just require a messenger. This way he could be the MacGuffin that TFA makes him out to be, only for a 2-in-1 edit where he blows up the First Order fleet. Or, in a longer edit, he might want to teach Rey first so that she learns the lesson of restraint before he makes such a huge act. Or maybe he’s convinced that Rey is already lost by trying to save/join Kylo Ren on Snoke’s ship and he’s trying to take out them both! who knows, just spitballing ideas.

I’ve been hunting with no avail for this. It’s not even released here in the UK (even though they said it would be on the iTunes release) and it would be really handy for my edit also.

Does anyone know how or know where one can find the music only version of the Last Jedi soundtrack? I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use it in my edit.

I redid my concept ending for TLJ to clean it up a little more. I think that this could be a good concept for fan-editors who want to keep the Canto Bight kids in and end the film differently. It’s not perfect but it’s a good start.

It now ends like this:
Kylo w/ Dice -> Falcon Escape -> Canto Bight Kids -> Falcon Party -> End Credits

Let me know what you think!

After some research, the isolated score is only available through Disney’s Movies Anywhere streaming app, so the only way would be if someone could do a “stream rip” (is that even possible?) or an audio recording of the stream.

And since it’s streaming, the sound would be lossy. So none of this is really ideal. Thanks, Disney.

And people gave me shit when I complained about the isolated score being a streaming-only extra rather than an extra audio track on the disc…

I wouldn’t think this would really matter if you are just using it to smooth over some cut points.

One of the versions of my edit merges the island ending from TFA with the island opening in TLJ. For the life of me I cannot get the colors to match.

If anyone can match the colors the best they can between those two scenes, then I will be forever grateful 😃

It’s because it was overcast while shooting the TFA scene and sunny while shooting the TLJ scene. It might not be doable just due to the harshness of the light and shadows in TLJ.

You could always try Dre’s excellent colormatch tool.

Hadn’t thought of that. Doesn’t that require exact frame matches?
