The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released) — Page 15

Here’s at least one attempt at a transition from Finn and Rose in hyperspace to Luke back on the island. It’d be necessary in order to remove the fathier chase and truly decimate the Canto Bight portion of the film, in conjunction with the previous clip I posted.

The OST was used to provide a musical transition.

On the off chance that I might be right, I poked in here to see if Hal9000 was doing an edit… YES!

I haven’t read the entire thread yet… I’ll get to that so apologies if this has been said. Would it be possible to change Luke’s Force projection saber color green? Rotoscoping or whatever magic editors use? I guess I am in a small minority of people who were hoping for the green, and to be quite honest, no offence to Rian’s vision, there are SO MANY hints that Luke isn’t there and three weeks after the movie is released everyone knows. But it would be cool to re-watch the final confrontation and see Luke ignite the green like he did on Jabba’s sail barge.

Cheers! Subscribing!

Thanks for the injection of enthusiasm! I’ve commented elsewhere that I see the importance of Luke choosing to use the image of the saber he rejected at the beginning of the movie. When TFA came out I said I’d have rather the green saber been the macguffin than digging Anakin’s out from the void. I get why it’d be desirable, but why open that can of worms?
But, given that TFA gives us Anakin’s and that Luke rejects it at the start of TLJ, it’s right that he should wield its image at the climax.

I really like your newest clip Hal. Regardless of the merits of keeping/removing the fathier chase, I really like the new music transition between scenes. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like it helps give Finn’s last look of contemplation a little more weight. As if it could make the audience doubt even more whether Finn will actually commit to the cause or become like DJ.

That is a really great point. Hmmm… I am going to ponder on that one for awhile. I like where your head is at though.

Please recolor Holdo’s ridiculous hair. This is Star Wars, not Hunger Games.

Yes and everybody in star wars looks normal and like a natural person you’d see who didn’t do anything to alter their own appearance!

I would like to follow after darthrush in removing the fathier stuff altogether, going from Finn and Rose leaving their cell straight to hyperspace.
To do this, it would be very helpful to have some sort of shot to establish that BB8 is inside the cell with them, and another to show that BB8 is following them. (This could be adding him to the shot of them starting to move toward the cell door, or a separate shot of BB8 beginning to roll, implying he’s following them.)

Does anyone have the ability and desire to put something like this together? Also, I should have a rough cut available soon, if anyone would like to preview the film as a whole with all these changes implemented.

Hal, I was looking over your cutlist and liked the idea of cutting Luke saying “Nothing will change my mind”. It did sound a bit childish in theaters and you made a good point about connecting the two static shots of R2 so I tried it out and wonder what everyone thinks.

Smooth, very smooth. I like that a lot! Thanks for keeping the last line though!

Please tell me this means no kids at the end… 😉

I’d be willing to preview btw

Hal, for the fathier chase, do you plan on showing them leave the cell and then straight to hyperspace all in the same scene like in my preview? I got a lot of feedback saying that it felt abrupt.

Here is my idea for an solution:

We see Finn and Rose leave the cell. If BB-8 can be put in somehow then that’s a nice addition like you said but not necessary. After they follow him out the cell, you CUT to the Canto Bight police running down the prison halls and looking at the empty sewer/hole.

Now you can either cut right to hyperspace from there or cut to another plot thread and then when we come back to Finn and Rose, they are in hyperspace. I can try throwing together a preview after school today sometime.

Hmmm… well now I’m not sure. You’re right that if I go that route we now have no establishment of those kids whatsoever now.
Perhaps I should try to put together an ending Falcon scene with no dialogue. Don’t know if that could even be done or not.
I think it’ll come down to whether the current plan of heavily reducing Canto Bight works out seamlessly. Right now we have the problem of needing a shot or two of BB8 and making the transition to the hyperspace scene (whether directly or later in the film), without feeling weird that we’re suddenly on a different ship.

I’m not too good with effects work but I’ll see if I can throw anything together to help guide others. I’m not sure if you saw my revised ending I did, but I removed the dialogue in the group shot and flipped the scenes of the Falcon in hyperspace and the group shot. I think it works very well and leaves more of a optimistic cliffhanger for IX.

If removing the Broom Boi scene, the ending will be a tough one. There have been other discussions and edit/previews trying this and each time they do feel a bit too abrupt.

I think DZ’s Falcon ending with the switched shots at the end is quite good. Maybe just tweaking the audio a bit, adding sound foley and such would sell it.

Thanks! Like I’ve said many times before, I really don’t have great editing software, hopefully just some good ideas that can be used to help others with their edits!

It now ends like this:
Kylo w/ Dice -> Falcon Escape -> Canto Bight Kids -> Falcon Party -> End Credits

Canto Kids were moved ahead but can easily be pulled. I just adjusted based on the consensus at the time.

Oh, I was thinking your Falcon ending but no broom boy ending.

That was the newest version that had audio fixes at the end. Just ignore the kids. I can post another cleaner version when I am by my computer later today.
