"Abrams, along with casting director Nina Gold, who has worked on both Episode VII and Episode VIII, are searching for a female lead, 40-50 years old, to play the role of “MARA.” It’s common practice for film’s to use code names during the casting process, and that could be the case here. To be clear, we’re only able to confirm that they are looking to fill the role of a female lead who they are calling “MARA.”

Haha there’s no way (if they even were to include her) that they’d reveal her name in a casting call.

After thinking about it a bit more, there may be a third option for completing the Kylo arc. Rather than 1: Achieving total victory or 2: Being killed, he could just walk away from it all. I imagine it could play out where Rey creates some new, stripped-down version of the Jedi without all of their rules and hangups, and Kylo could realize that he really doesn’t have any problem with this interpretation of the Force. He realizes that even after destroying everything that reminded him of the past, it still haunts him, and that he’s the problem, not everything else. He helps Rey defeat the First Order and return peace to the galaxy, then disappears from the story for good.

I think there are a lot more than just the three options you pose. Kylo’s a complicated character, and depending on what happens in IX, his conclusion could be pretty complicated too.

Maybe he’ll have a brain hemorrhage while force choking Hux, and a cybernetic Phasma will take over the First Order and rule alongside a once-again-resurrected Darth Maul.

That’s if JJ wants to get that complicated.

Well, didn’t he create the character to begin with?

JJ creates amazing startpoints and isn’t the best at sticking the landing in my opinion.

I tend to disagree. We’ll see I guess.

Indeed we will and I do hold out hope for Kylo getting the best ending possible. He really is a great character.

Kylo needs to get everything he ever wanted before losing his mind through guilt. A nice breakdown, no redemption.

Chilling with Lobot probably. Both annoyed that Nien Nunb didn’t want to hang out.

I could get behind this.

How is there even anything to disagree on. JJ is universally notorious for his playing-it-safe mystery boxes that frequently rip off older, better content. The guy hasn’t done anything unique since the beginning of his career. It’s not like it’s a niche opinion. He’s not a bad director but he’s still a company yes-man; he’s a safe crowd pleasing bet. Not a bad thing if all you care about are popcorn flicks, but otherwise you’re shit outta luck.

“That’s just like, your opinion man.”

Interesting, as I recall Star Wars being derided as a Popcorn Movie by snooty critics back in the day.

This Pauline Kael comment is funny and has some truth in it: “The only real inspiration involved in Star Wars was to set its sci-fi galaxy in the pop-culture past and to turn old-movie ineptness into conscious Pop Art.”

What a pompous horse’s patoot! I think they were the one I recall praising the Disney comedy Candleshoe over Star Wars. Which film is better remembered today? 😛

One of the bad guys in Willow is named General Kael.

There’s a difference between saying nobody can like something and pointing out the fact that a filmmaker only gets hired to make safe studio projects. JJ was brought in because he can make IX as safe as possible, the same reason Howard was brought in for Solo, and the same reason almost every director with the exception of Rian has had major production issues, been sidelined for reshoots or outright fired.

If being able to run a tight ship and make entertaining, beautiful, and technically perfect movies makes a director “safe,” then I guess I like safe directors.

I think a lot of Star Wars fans are overestimating what people even within the fanbase know. I had no idea that Mara is even a name of significance. It’s not like they revealed a resurrected Palpatine in the casting call.
