Someone on FE.org asked about what deleted scenes I will be using so I thought it would be a good idea to paste my response here. The user, samspider (an awesome faneditor), was asking if I would include the caretaker deleted scene for context of my response.

"In regards to deleted scenes, I have taken a close look at all of them and think I will only be using one of them and that would be Luke Mourning. I am not sure yet where I will use it since I think it can go in a number of places but I will use it for sure.

The reason for not including the Caretaker scene is a few reasons:

1. I really like us seeing a ray of hope for Luke and Rey at the end of their second lesson and then its sadder to see that it doesn’t work out. I think this was one of Rian Johnson’s own reasons for cutting it.
2. It portrays Luke in an unfashionable light. In the second lesson, we see Luke very broken and sincere. He opens up to Rey and seems to grow more understanding of the need for him. The deleted scene shows Luke straight up lying to Rey and laughing it off. I think it kinda shows us that Luke will let nothing change his mind. Whereas in the theatrical cut, you get the sense that he was close to changing his mind at the end of the second lesson.
3. Lastly, just for pacing reasons. It is a very long scene and since I don’t like it very much for reasons above, it just makes sense to keep it out of the film to keep the pacing at a nice brisk flow."
