The X-Wing/TIE Fighter series for PC were the best Star Wars games ever.
They could easily be remade and outdone now. Why nobody’s doin’ it is beyond me.

Because flight sims aren’t “in” right now.

Sidenote, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter VR would be the only thing I can think of to get me to throw money into VR. That would be amazing.

I’d think a revamped X-Wing vs TIE Fighter could change that. And with the success of R1, I’d think a game where you decide to join the Rebels or Empire and start a “career” would be popular.
I’ll admit that I’m in no way in touch with the current gaming market though.

YES.

The flight mode in the new Battlefront is fantastic. I’ve never been a big fan of flight sims but I love what they did. A full game based on that would be awesome.

Would be cool if they made a new Rogue Sqadron game, especially now that we have a canon origin for the Rogue callsign.

Factor 5 is also dead, so that’s another one which is never coming back.

The Rogue Squadron games were always really cool with great environments and neat storylines. But I HATED their control scheme. Having the yaw and roll combined into one control where you effectively made flat turns and could get further away from or closer to the ground but without having true three dimensional freedom always drove me nuts. Especially in the space levels where there is no ground reference! Let me loop, roll, immelman, and split-s 'til my heart’s content dang-it!

Exactly why I would love the people who made the flight mode in Battlefront to work on a new one.

The original N64 control scheme didn’t exactly have a lot of complexity. But then I’d probably hate any modern attempt since it would just be about micro transactions now. Time to break out X-Wing Alliance instead.

I loved X-Wing Alliance the most of that flight sim series (though they were all great). And that was an example of controls done right. You had full three dimensional authority, but they also tweaked it slightly so it didn’t just feel like airplane controls. What would normal be the yaw (rudder) input actually controlled roll. And what would normally have been roll was mostly yaw, but with a subtle coordinated rolling action incorporated. It was genius because it felt otherworldly and “spaceship-y” while still retaining all the traditional directional control inputs.

Plus you could actually move freely in three dimensions.

It’s been years since I played it, but I remember really liking the flight controls in the original PS2 Batlefront II because they were very similar to the X-wing series controls.

I’ve not played the new BF2, but I have the first PS4 Battlefront and it’s flight controls are somewhere between the X-wing style and the Rogue Squadron controls. They’re not perfect, but they lean enough towards the X-wing style that I’ve enjoyed playing it.

I wonder if EA would see enough profit in making a game that was as flight-based as those were.

I think this is the best place to post this, but there’s a rumour that Disney is planning to end their deal with EA regarding the SW licence.

I’m sure it’s pure nostalgia, but I have the fondest memories of the old green vector graphics arcade game.

They included it as a secret in Rogue Squadron 3!

I’ve always been quite partial to Star Wars: Bounty Hunter on the PS2. It’s not perfect but there aren’t really any other Star Wars games like it and the concept is very cool.

Other than that Rogue Squadron 3 for the GC and Shadows of the Empire on the N64 are absolutely killer.

Yeah, I wasn’t a huge fan of the new Battlefront games, but the flight stuff was top notch and getting into the cockpit view felt like being in the movies. Definitely a lot of fun in the beta.

Certainly not enough to put it in greatest-ever territory, but speaking of Battlefront II, I’m enjoying the shit out of the Ewoks vs. Stormtroopers mode.

In all seriousness, this was my first introduction to Star Wars and I think it does a great job in almost every way. I haven’t played any of the older games but from what I have played this wins.
