Most Disappointing / Satisfying Aspect of the Sequel Trilogy? — Page 6

Things I liked most: Kylo Ren, the practical effects, the fact that it didn’t make the same mistakes the Prequels made.

Things I disliked most: Pandaring nostalgia for the OT, inferior music and action, poor implementation of humor and a setting that’s a soft reboot for all intents and purposes.

TFA had its fair share of idiotic humour (the cringe worthy rathtars) and nobody batted an eyelash, in fact some even praised it “OMG SW now has comedy in it LOL”, and Johnson has decided to continue with Abrams brand of humour but now everyone is like “WTF Johnson is ruining SW with his comedy”. Seriously why? I don’t get it.

People think that “darker middle chapter” means no more fun.

Also I wouldn’t say nobody batted an eye on tfa. But while I like much of the humor in both I think it could be both more effective as humor if simply toned down as well as balancing the tone overall.

A lot of the humor in TFA was too blunt. “The garbage will do!” and lines like that felt very weak and kind of juvenile and uncreative. I actually liked the “cute boyfriend” line because it felt like an OT line. It isn’t trying to be a joke, it’s just a funny and lighthearted line similar to something like “It’s not my fault!” from Empire.

The Force Awakens humor has a few misses here and there but overall, it lets serious moments breathe. Hands down, the most annoying aspect of the Last Jedi to me is the out of place humor. The horse chase scene is terrible but you can take a bathroom break. The humor on the other hand punctures other scenes throughout the rest of the movie.

  • the look. After seeing a trilogy filled with green screen footage poorly composited over CGI backgrounds it was a PLEASURE to watch real sets, real locations, real props etc.

You do realize practically all the backgrounds that are composited into the Prequels are miniatures.

I was being a bit hyperbolic. Rian apparently decided to ignore the Vader wannabe aspect of the character, which was a major part of Kylo, so that kind of passes the message that he wanted to just not care as much about consistency to me.

It’s played as character development, though. They make a big deal out of Kylo destroying his mask after Snoke insults it. He realizes he needs to grow beyond being a Vader fanboy.

Ikr? I was really confused why everyone was so shocked by the comedy in TLJ. It felt like natural progression of what was in TFA.

Sorry for so many posts in a row; I’m just responding to plenty of people. If mods can fuse posts, this would be a good time to use that power. I could move this all to one post, but then we’d just have a bunch of empty posts…

Anyway, my turn now.

I agree with Handman that the most disappointing aspect is that the story doesn’t feel like it needed to be told. Like you guys said, that really comes down to whether you like the story or not. My problem is that it’s a retread of the Rebels versus Empire dynamic that feels completely out of place, and is not what I came to see. The Empire was defeated three decades ago, show me something new. The Prequels had no problem doing that.

The most satisfying aspect…yeah, I’m gonna go with Kylo Ren too.

It was very spelled out, which is not my type of joke.

That doesn’t make them look any better.

I would need to rewatch the movie but the only bit I do remember smiling was when a woman is doing a medical check on Chewbacca, because that’s the most OT Chewbacca bit of the movie (in the rest of his scenes, Chewbacca felt more like a terciary character with forced attempts at humor, being there just because without adding something substancial). Dunno why, but that bit reminded me of Chewbacca after the Imperial probe droid from TESB self-destroyed, I always smile at Chewie’s reaction there. The rest of the comedy from TFA felt very forced, not based in the characters just being themselves as in the OT.

The way people talk about the humor in TLJ, you’d think Luke made a fart during his death scene, or Rey slipped on a banana when they revealed her parentage.

I’ve noticed that many here dislike the fact that TLJ pretty much disregards the set-up of TFA, but that’s exactly one of the things I love so much about TLJ, that it spits right in the face of its predecessor. I applaud Johnson’s decision to do away with TFA’s stupid set-up and just trust his instincts doing what he felt was right. I’d like to know if anyone here feels the same way.

IMO SW needs more people like Johnson who aren’t afraid to do what they think is best and are willing to take risks even if it pisses people off, not people like Filoni who’s a play-it-safe good-guys-always-win guy. Rian Johnson’s SW trilogy is right now the SW project I am looking forward to the most.

Sure. Snoke was a dead nobody and Rey was also nobody and I loved that stuff.

I don’t even know what this means.

It’s an in your face and overly simplistic setup and payoff. “That ship is garbage!” [other ship immediately gets blown up] “The garbage will do!” I don’t find that shit funny. I like more conversational humor that doesn’t feel scripted.

If anything, part of the reason people hated TLJ so much was because it doubled down on things that TFA set up, instead of disregarding them like some people wanted (Luke’s running away, Rey’s force ability/being a nobody, the First Order’s power, etc).

Except that’s not true. Episode 1 used miniatures for the spaceships and some of the backgrounds, all of the space footage was CGI in episodes 2 and 3, and almost all of the surroundings, with a few exceptions.

This was one of my initial complaints with the film, and I still standby it to some degree.

TFA ends with Luke Skywalker, eyes watery and reluctant, an ending that compelled me to continue watching the new films. Yet in TLJ, he simply looks annoyed. That whole emotional ending is essentially “mocked” by Johnson. I really didn’t mind Luke throwing the lightsaber, but I would’ve preferred it had he done so under a different purpose – if that makes sense.

That being said, it’s a good film, even though I disagree with many of the decisions it makes.

“That said, there is nothing wrong with mocking prequel lovers and belittling their bad taste.” - Alderaan, 2017
