I’d still say this definitely looks miles better than anything in AOTC.

Disagree. There’s some stuff on Kamino (mainly the exterior shots) that look miles better than that scene.

the space bugs.

Space bugs? Do you mean the poisonous worms at the start of the film? I don’t think they look too bad for 2002, there are far worse looking things in the film.

I think the PT gets too much of a bad wrap for its CGI in general. Yeah there’s some crap in there, but there’s a lot of good in there too, you just don’t notice it because it’s actually blended well. Considering they were the first films to really utilise CGI to that extend they could have turned out a lot worse.

I mean there’s some shitty looking CGI characters and locations in AOTC, but I don’t think I laughed at any of it like I did with that awful green screen shot of Finn and Rose on Canto when they’re galloping away from the Casino. It reminded me of the ROTJ speeder chase, and not in a good way. For all its faults TLJ does have some gorgeous visuals, even Canto itself is really well put together, so I have no idea why the quality dipped so suddenly for that one shot.

pretty sure he was talking about the geonosians

i honestly don’t think the cgi looks bad in rots. sure, you have the scene neverar posted, and some battle droids here and there, but kashyyyk, mustafar, most of coruscant, and several other scenes look gorgeous to me, given that it’s a 2005 film.

Kashyyyk looks better in Battlefront II than it does in the actual movie.

I agree that looks terrible. But I will still take it over that shot I posted of Anakin on the assbeast.

There are hardly any environments in AOTC or ROTS that look real to me.
There are also hardly any environments in AOTC or ROTS that needed to be 100% effects, which is what makes them horrible from any perspective.

Also this.

I think so too, but if they’re space bugs, so are our ants.

What’s funny about that is Kashyyyk in Episode III is one of the only locations with real world footage (Thailand and China).

This also had a bunch of real world footage:

Still looks fake because they manipulated it way too much.

AOTC and ROTS also didn’t look as bad then as they do now since they’ve aged poorly. Scenes like the Coruscant opening weren’t ridiculed for how bad they looked at the time.

I wish I could say that was the only bad looking scene.

but kashyyyk… looks gorgeous to me, given that it’s a 2005 film.

Actual movie still:

I didn’t know your photobucket account needing upgrading was in the movie.

Wait what? I have to upgrade to do 3rd party hosting? Guess that’s the end of photobucket for me.

I guess I don’t use it that often. It was a picture I uploaded a while ago.

It was fun to see dozens of pages of discussion on my project rendered incomprehensible by Photobucket Speedometers. Good times.

What project?

I thought it looked bad in the theaters and I was in the fifth grade. Nothing else in the prequels looked bad to me at the time (although I didnt like them nearly as much as the OT) but even my simple fifth grade mind wondered whY return of the jedi made in 1983 had A better looking space battle than this new movie.

Man I never thought that as a kid. I think the special effects in the prequels work well in motion (mostly) and they didn’t distract me then, and they still don’t.

Not enough people read the EU.

Besides a few shots, I don’t even think the opening battle is that bad. Not much worse than your typical CG space battle. In my mind the worst parts of the movie(s) are when actors are just walking around too obviously comp’ed into the environment.

The worst one of those was when Mace Windu, Yoda, and Kenobi are all standing in the Jedi Temple atrium in AOTC. That one looked particularly bad. I also think LuckyGungan brings up a good point in that taking a still image of a fast-paced CG action scene isn’t a fair assessment of how it actually looks in motion. That still of Kashyyyk looked awful a few posts up, but it definitely isn’t that noticeably horrible in the film, even if it does still look fake.
