Between Top Secret and The Doors movie, why didn’t Val Kilmer have a recording career?

Be Kind Rewind (2008)

Hadn’t seen this in…probably a decade. Still as charming as ever!

I’d love the irony of it getting released on 4K.

The Seven Percent Solution- Written by Nicholas Star Trek Meyer of Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, & The Undiscovered Country, this Sherlock Holmes pastiche is immense fun. Meyer deconstructs the literary hero by having him detox from his cocaine addiction with Sigmund Freud. Along the way, Holmes, Watson, and Freud of course get entangled in an adventure where they must combine their intellects to solve a mystery. One of the key revelations counts as a major retcon which may not sit well with Holmes fans, but it’s an interesting choice. Director Herbert Ross keeps the film moving at an enjoyable brisk clip, Meyer’s script is witty, creative, and above all, fun, and Ken Adam’s period production design is a treat. An absolute blast.

I’ve wanted to see that for awhile now. Have you seen A Study in Terror?

No, not yet. Is that one of the Jack the Ripper ones? I’ve seen Clark’s Murder By Decree.

A Night At The Opera (1935) - hadn’t seen this in seven years or so. Still love it to bits. The part around the middle where Chico and Harpo play music for the folks in steerage is absolutely mesmerizing. Beautiful, lovely film.

Being There (1979) - I wanted to like this. I really did. Lots of people who I respect never tire of singing Hal Ashby’s praises, and even though I hated Harold and Maude, I was willing to chalk that up as an honest miss and give the guy another chance. But this supposed masterpiece was every bit as cutesy and preposterous as H + M. Peter Sellers’s performance was reliably amazing, so it was worth watching for that at least, and there were more than a few undeniably beautiful visual moments, but I just could not get behind the writing. I didn’t hate it, but I don’t think I’ll be going out of my way to watch anything else of Ashby’s again.

I think I liked Harold and Maude more, though I thought Being There was pretty good too. I didn’t realize Hal Ashby did both.

Lord knows I dig some polarizing directors (cough Godard cough), so I don’t begrudge anyone their Ashby love, but I think I’ve now come to understand that he isn’t for me.

Bride of Frankenstein deserves more than a 75%.

It wasn’t perfect. A bit better than the first, though. Funny, Dune is the one I was considering giving four stars, but I felt it just doesn’t quite make it.

Note: 3/4 stars is 75%, but it is not a C. The letter grade system only uses 50% of the percentage scale to rate things, and is therefore incomparable. It would be more akin to a B.

SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Unless you’ve somehow seen Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune, or maybe Jodorowsky’s unmade one, I don’t understand.

That’s why you just need to say, “I like the movie because . . .” or “I didn’t like the movie because . . .”

That way we actually know your opinion on the movies you’ve watched.

I don’t understand why people hate Lynch’s film so much. The production looks great, the art design looks great, the music is great, the performances are great, the plot is great, and there are very few moments that it becomes hard to follow in. If I were to check out the workprint fanedit that’s out there somewhere, it would probably be even better.

I sometimes actually review the movie under my rating, but I get lazy quite frequently. 😛

I mean, I don’t hate it, it just dumbs down the book. It can kinda be summed up by the part where, in the book, Paul says “My name has become a killing word” because he has an army of jihadists killing in his name, but the movie takes that moment and makes it thuddingly literal. I love the production design, the music, the cast, but the movie just doesn’t work for me.

Proabably because they haven’t watched the tv miniseries adaptation that looks like they raided the costumes left over from Flash Gordon? 😉
That whole production felt and looked cheap.

I felt that the exchange in the movie spoke exactly that which you say is meant in the book. There is literal context added in the movie, but the underlying meaning is the same. At least that’s how I, as someone who hasn’t read the book, took it.

Agreed on both counts, ray. I don’t think I’ve put any ratings on any of my posts here. Now, Letterboxd is a different matter, but no one cares about that.
