Me too. I think it has the best color of the Despecialized series. I think a quality complaint should have some sort of specific information in it. “way more” doesn’t mean anything in the context of something that is or needs to be fine tuned.

This may be a known issue, but if not I thought I’d just mention it.

The first time the Snow Speeders appear you can see through them to the mountains behind.

Anyway, thank you Harmy for your amazing work.

This happens in the grindhouse (35mm scan) as well - a flaw in the original film.

That’s how it is. In order to avoid matte lines (the black outline around objects in optical compositing) that would be apparent in the white Hoth scenes, the speeders were made semi transparent.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

OK, I didn’t know that. Thank you

I found a new 2004 change.

Imgur

In Star Wars, Just after Ben is cut down @ 01:30:16:00

There is a close shot of the door being closed in front of Vader, then it cuts to the xtreme wide of the door. On the SE and the GOUT its a clean cut, two clean frames then two frames of pink flash. On the Bluray where it should cut to the wide it goes to two super blown out frames of the same shot then one frame of 100% white then back to match the gout on the last frame of the pink flash.

This has not been changed on the DE 2.7

Ive made a gif to describe this. https://gfycat.com/IdealDemandingFairyfly

Well that’s a bizarre change. I seriously can’t see the reason behind doing something like that. But he changed the shirt colour of an cantina alien, so I probably shouldn’t be wondering at all.

Maybe those two frames were damaged. Anyway, that’s a good find - how on Earth does one notice something like this?

Just scrubbing through the lineup I’ve put together and noticed it. Lucky I guess. I’m making a new shot index that I think will be helpful to a lot of people.

I’ve found several instances of frames at the beginning or end of shots which are partially/fully duplicated from the frame beside it.
Two examples that come to mind are the shot of Luke climbing down the Falcon tunnel into the turret, and Luke running towards the burning homestead. For my project, in both cases I replaced the detail with the SSE.

The only reason I can think of for these oddities is damage on the negative, and nobody bothered to use an interpositive to replace the damaged frames.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

But if the SE is ok, that should mean the negative is fine…?

Very interesting and bizarre find.

The Silver Screen Edition, the SE is what’s bad.

Chewielewis say: “On the SE and the GOUT it’s a clean cut”. And in his picture example, it’s written: Special Edition Team Blue.

I missed that part. That makes no sense, since I can’t beliece any film damage would have happened between the creation of the SE and the DVD version 7 years later.

I know! That’s why this is so strange.

Here’s something that came up in the 4K77 thread…

It looks like all versions of the film prior to the creation of the new Interpositive in 1985 had an artificially extended bright scene as Luke makes his foolhardy first attack pass on the Death Star:

Imgur

All 3 film scans agree, Luke is supposed to stay bright - Video clip:

vimeo.com/278040945

What this probably means is that the effect was produced as part of the color correction process - they artificially turned up the brightness to achieve this look (as opposed to using on set lighting to produce an in camera effect). This would mean that the extended bright version is not on the negative. The last interpositive created for home video releases was made in 1985, and that would have been created directly from the negative - so the extended brightness wasn’t there and I guess nobody thought to re-add it, so none of the home video releases from that point on have it. However, I just looked at the 1982 CED release, the 1983 HBO broadcast and the 1982 rental tape and they all have the extended brightness, which makes sense as they were probably created from the same color timed interpositive as the release prints.

This frame is from the CED version:

This isn’t a Special Edition change, but if Despecialized is striving to replicate the original theatrical version of the film, this is perhaps another change that you might want to undo…

Star Wars - Death Star approach V 2.7

I noticed 2 shots that need more work it’s not so much an error but 2 are crushed blacks from Blu Ray.

The 2 Mattes of the Death Star after “accelerate to attack speed” have crushed Black the dish is missing and on the closer fly in shot the Death Star surface is missing detail. Time 01.43.02 and 01.43.10 compare with the GOUT

Is it really meant to be that Cyan also? Considering it’s Blue Screen I feel Highly unlikely.

Ah there is one more that I have and I am not sure about it or not…

When we see the still of the Land Speeder parked outside Ben’s Hut, the Engine Grills are missing I have a book with the exact Landspeeder image but with Engine Grills in the Film it is Black. So it may or may not have had engine grills at one point as the image in the book does have the grey Grills at the back and it’s the exact same element.

I think this can probably be chalked up to a missing matte but anyway enjoy 😃

the Landspeeder image was not exactly the same as in the film but I filled in the blanks… Something to perhaps track down if one were doing a studio restoration. But It may have been a 3 stage element as the Back seems to match but not the fronts part has perhaps been slid down…

Seems like this shot has somehow slipped out. The frames preceeding and following these two are correct so I’m not sure how this happened.

I watched 2.7 Despecialized Star Wars last night. Looks very good, but I noticed specular highlights were clipped at various times throughout the movie. Reflections could sometimes look too bright. Any thoughts on this?

Probably because most of it is using the Blu-ray as a source which suffers from things like that.
