Really? I don’t think you’ve met my friend Laserdisc. The 1993 THX LD mix can even give a modern home theater system a workout.

I was just going to say that—I think the '95 Faces LDs (same sound as '93 LDs) sound fantastic, in all respects (including the score).

This is pretty interesting. I was aware of the fact that Luke was Starkiller in the shooting script, but I had no idea they actually shot scenes with it.

I wish this would be released, I’d love to see it.

I guess Mark’s memory is selective–he didn’t seem to recall shooting the lightsaber construction scene for ROTJ. 😉

To be fair, that scene isn’t really him constructing it anyway, he’s making a small tweak at most. He might have been assuming people were talking about a scene where he builds it all from scratch.

That could be. Here are the clips, btw:

Does anyone else refuse to call Star Wars “A New Hope”?

I call it “SW” here, “SW '77” elsewhere.

Same here.

Hey! I’m not that old! And what’s a wookie?

Haven’t you heard? A wookiee’s name doubles as its telomeres. The older a wookiee gets, the more letters are shaved off of its species names. Old wookiees are Wooks, or even just Woos.

You callin SilverWook old?

The 93 mix sounds great for the sound effects for sure but I still think the score sounds awful. I guess it’s just me but I’m baffled. Almost baffled enough to post a/b samples of certain scenes but not tell which is which, but too much work.

The 93 mix is better than the 2004 mix by a mile though.

TFA is on TBS and TNT at the same time, only one started a bit earlier. Flipping back and forth between them is weird. Like when It’s a Wonderful Life was on multiple channels at once.

Our likely best hope of a professionally done restoration for a 4K theatrical version of the Original Trilogy probably lies here - with poita’s superb The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints ongoing project.

They don’t seem to like releasing material that shows that things changed significantly in the development. I think it started with George’s lie that he had everything planned since 1975 and that attitude has carried on ever since. I think that’s why there were no R1 deleted scenes released.

Have there been any good alien designs in Star Wars since Return of the Jedi? I can’t think of any that I liked designed after '83.

I forgot about him. He looks pretty menacing, I guess, but he looks very human. What about the more alien designs? I’m thinking like something along the lines of a Tuskan Raider or Wampa or Gamorrean Gaurd.

Whatever one thinks of the rathtar scene, I think they look pretty cool. Like something out of Doom.

I like the Crimson Corsair and his first mate. A lot of the new designs fall into the same trap though - too beige and too stumpy. Like Hammerhead’s malformed cousins. There are no specific natives or groups like Sand People and Ugnauts.

The Kel Dor look pretty menacing, and the design is very similar to Zuckuss from ESB. I also think that Benthic & Edrio and Moroff from RO fit pretty well in with the OT aesthetic.

I also really like the look of the Neimodians, and the Crimson Corsair, as mentioned above, is a pretty striking design.

Kel Dor reminds me a lot of an alien from season 4 of Star Trek: Voyager. It looks like it could’ve been a villain design at some point. I read that at least some of the background Jedi in the prequels used designs from Sith Lord sketches that Lucas didn’t ultimately approve, so I wonder if that’s where that one came from.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Ploo Koon was based on rejected Darth Maul concept art similarly to Asaj Ventress. Or it could just be that they wanted a design that worked in the SW universe and that they used Zuckuss as inspiration. It’s kind of funny to me how so many SW aliens since has used similar breathing devices.

BTW, what specific alien from Star Trek did Ploo Koon remind you of? I haven’t seen a lot of Voyager and now I’m really curious.

There’s tons of awesome aliens in TFA and R1. I like these guys from Maz’s castle.

JEDIT

I’m also a big fan of Moroff. I also thought this guy from R1 was pretty cool.

They kinda look like a mix between the ANH “wolfman” and the bug-eyed concept art version of Chewie.
