the tone of the film

A movie where Luke dies has the tone of a comedy ? Not sure about the “tone” angle here.

I mean, if you want to cut out all the humor throughout the movie and make it into a very dreary and heavy film, that’s one thing. But if you’re leaving in much of the humor throughout, then it’s important to establish upfront that, while these are very dramatic circumstances with some big powerful moments, this is still a fun Star Wars movie with moments of levity here and there. A film’s tone doesn’t have to be monotonous.

Totally agree. Star Wars should have this mix. I think of the humor like salt … needs the right balance, but is noticeable if there is too little or too much.

And it’s given so many of us high blood pressure.

I felt very put off by this opening “holding” gag, especially with a “your mother” joke tacked on. I can’t imagine an SNL parody of a similar situation going much further in that direction, ala ‘Undercover Boss: Starkiller base.’ It’s all the B-list actors involved in the scene, locking it into SNL territory for me.

Anyway, as the blood vessels in my brain throb and my body cries out for sleep, here’s the latest result in my attempt to thread the needle with this opening scene. I’ve inserted some very lightweight score as the music originally dropped away as Hux says, “…wipe your filth from the galaxy!” A separate tiny piece (unrelated to the music it fades into because that portion of the score is not found on the soundtrack) bridges this lightweight music into the more action-y music of the completed loading bar.

Oh but I agree about that, it’s just I don’t think you need humor in all places, especially this kind of SNL humor. But I’m totally in favor of keeping the “good” humor when in place. At the very beginning of the movie, during this sequence, I feel it’s off. Leia’s line (“I’m with the droid on this one”) is much more appropriate “Star Wars humor” than Hux being made fun of. And that’s all what is needed in this sequence.

I still prefer the first attempt with nothing left from the prank call.

At a visceral level, I’m still with you on preferring option A, Mala.
I want to have the best possible option for B as well to consider. If B was what we got in theaters, it wouldn’t have stood way out as a problem to me, I think. Poe and Hux act in character in B, and the humor is driven by their personalities without going over the top. If I can get it down to the point of working, that’s probably the better choice.
Would anyone watching option B as a first time audience feel anything was off?

I think option B needs some sort of confused reaction from Hux as he realizes something is off right before Poe attacks. Just a small pay off that shows Poe’s intention behind the call. Like if someone says “look behind you!” we need a “huh?” before he gets punched in the face or whatever.

No. Every line of dialogue uttered fit both their characters and is actually something i expect to hear from them. This is no longer a humorous scene, it is more of a tease - the way snappy lines should be in Star Wars.

Yes! I like this option. Keeps some of the joke without going too far in either direction.

Best option I’ve seen so far. Better than my complete removal.

Let’s say option B is more TFA-oriented. If the goal is to change the jokes from TLJ-meta jokes to TFA-jokes, this is the best option. But it comes with the assumption thar TFA jokes are funny… and I know I’m alone on this one, but jokes such as “who talks first ?”, Finn not understanding Han’s signal to look at Rey behind him, or “I’m in charge Phasma”, etc., I don’t find them funny 😕

Wouldn’t a dialog overlay be more effective ? Poe punching the power while Hux is still not finished talking ?

Really liked this - still has the humour, yet without losing too much of it from the original scene - a nice balance.

For me, the added ‘Hello’ gives a bit more to Hux’s personality - his ranting speeches that we’ve seen he likes to go on - without it going too far in detracting from the character.

Quality work 😃

I can’t remember where I saw it or who did it, but there was a clip posted in the past few weeks of BB8 and the walker being removed. Does anyone know where this is? I recall thinking it was spot on, but now can’t find it.

That does it for me. It cuts out the cheese and stays true to their character. Winner to me!

I’m repeating what’s already been said multiple times at this point, but if you want to keep part of the joke then this is the one to use!

A little off topic Hal, but have you considered how to end the film yet? I see a lot of edits that end with the Falcon going into hyperspace which just looks bad. If you go that approach, I think you should consider ending with the shot of everyone on the Falcon. I did a very rough mock-up which has the incorrect closing circle since my freeware program is very limited, but it gives the same idea either way.

Check it out if you want to:

In the scene when Holdo kills herself, could you make her fly the Republic Ship the wrong way and hit a planet instead?

I really enjoy watching your process on this thread, Hal. However, I think the edit “The Fallen Knight” has beaten everyone to the punch with the version of the Hux/Poe sequence. About 3 minutes in, the scene is dramatically trimmed. It’s pretty seamless. You can find that edit elsewhere, I think you’re already aware of it.

“A single light fighter?”

Hux gives the cadet a look.

Poe to BB-8: “Happy beeps here, buddy. Come on. We’ve pulled crazier stunts than this.”

Leia’s first moment

Hux shouts “open fire!” (Hux’s fear and frustration)

“BB-8, punch it!”

“He’s going for the dreadnaught.” “He’s insane.” (Hux’s relief)

I have to agree that this is the best version of that scene. The humour sprinkled in but doesn’t completely alter the tone

I’m going to leave the film’s ending alone; I don’t want to remove the kid.

How about something like this then? It’s far from perfect, but it leaves the kids in and ends with Rey and the gang instead.

Hal, your most recent version of Poe/Hux conversation is my favorite so far! A good balance I think.
