kk650's Regraded Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi V2 (blanket yellow tint removed from blu-ray)

Author
Time

With this V2 release the brightness has been reduced compared to the previous release for improved black levels overall.

2GB, 9GB and 23GB versions of Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi release are now available at two new places where the_magicman is uploading all my releases. The old place has become unreliable so I am no longer posting any releases there. All those interested in knowing where those two new places are, send me a PM.

Here are some screencap comparisons for this release:

Imho, some of those shots are made worse.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I’m curious, which of the regraded screencaps do you feel look worse?

Hmm, as far as 2 and 4 are concerned, I find the yellow snow and green sky on the blu-ray pretty questionable myself, I personally feel the colours in those scenes look much better after the strong blanket yellow tint has been removed.

I think 1 especially is a big improvement, the blue of the lightsaber and the core in particular look so much better on the regrade IMHO, hot like the lightsaber cores in the other Star Wars films.

5 is the only shot from the blu-ray shots where I don’t consider the regrade a big improvement, both shots look good colourwise, the regrade looks more natural but the blu-ray shot looks good as well.

It looks a tad too “blue” maybe somewhere in the middle would be better, but I think both versions look fine for the most part.

That’s pretty much all I can say too. It looks like the blanket tint was too aggressively removed in some shots, resulting in a purplish blue cast. Especially with the snow shots, which are notoriously tough to color grade.

Guys, taste it. It isn’t snow, it’s salt.

I agree with others, blue push is a little too aggressive.

And I have to say, that first shot looks so green screen… When I watched the final “duel” for the second time, them standing on the desert looked so fake I couldn’t believe. There was no feel of vastness or space at all.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Like others have said, a lot of those shots are supposed to simulate sunset/the golden hour. You take away the yellow, you make it feel like it’s 2 in the afternoon.

I think it’s unlikely that the grading simply had one blanket yellowish setting added over the top of it, even if some find it too yellow in general. It would probably need a careful shot by shot adjustment.

A couple look more natural (if that makes them better or worse is a personal choice. I don’t believe films need to be stripped of their color timing decisions to look good). But, some shots have indeed become blue enough that I’m sure the blue would fanedited away if it was released that way.

I mean yeah those screenshots definitely look like they have a yellow tint, but I watched the movie the other day and noticed no tint. Not saying it wasn’t there in some instances, but perhaps in those scenes it is meant to convey time of day and so I didn’t notice it? Just saying perhaps and stating my opinion. I think the Blu ray looks great.

I am very fond of the grade for The Last Jedi. It is insanely better than the infamous pink flesh tones of The Force Awakens, and the punchy reds in The Last Jedi aren’t magenta either. I don’t mind the golden “tint” to the film, a lot of the movie takes place during sunsets or while explosions are occurring or host lush golden light fixtures in Canto Bight. It fits the vibe, and personally, retracting that aspect degrades the image. Having its own style is part of the filmmaking process

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

This is very interesting kk, but I do recall the yellow tint in the theater, so I’m sticking with the original color grade 😛

I personally really like how this regrade looks and think its a big improvement over the blu-ray, but that is definately possible, that different scenes have had different amounts of blanket yellow tint added. I predominantly used the scene where Ray gives the lightsaber to Luke at the beginning and the lightsaber fight at the end to work out how much of the blanket yellow tint needed removing to bring the other colours back to life. I didn’t test any other scenes.

Its definately possible that other scenes may have had a less strong blanket yellow tint added. I personally do not think that is the case with the snow scenes though, I think those scenes were selectively graded to look bluer and colder before a yellow blanket tint was added across the whole film in a final pass.

I will test specifically that shot from the screencaps with the snow fox to see whether a different amount of yellow was added there and get back to you all.

I have to admit that that is something i’ve noticed myself from time to time with certain CGI heavy films, removing blanket tints does seem to draw more attention to green screen backgrounds when they haven’t been particularly well integrated with the characters themselves.

Could you post some screenshots from the regraded scene with Rey handing Luke the saber? I need to end up marching that footage with the overcast colors from TFA and this sounds like something along those lines.

After the blanket yellow tint is removed from The Last Jedi, it doesn’t look overcast like it did when they shot the scene in The Force Awakens so its unlikely to help in terms of maintaining continuety. I’m pretty certain they reshot the scene again for The Last Jedi and the lighting conditions seem to have been pretty different.

Here’s a screencap comparison between the blu-ray and this regrade from that scene:

Okay guys, I checked that shot with the snow fox from the screencaps and the blanket yellow tint is exactly the same in that shot as well.

As far as I can tell, i’ve removed the blanket yellow tint completely in that snow shot as well, so it matches the amount of the blanket yellow tint in the scene with Ray handing over the lightsaber to Luke and the final lightsaber scene.

I can see why some of you guys would like the more stylistic grading of the blu-ray but I feel like it is a big departure from the look of the other 8 Star Wars films. This film is very much a departure from the other Star Wars films in terms of its storytelling so I can see how it would fit here but I personally prefer maintaining visual continuety with the other Star Wars films as much as possible, even if the style of storytelling is quite different.

the green looks awful, kk650 has done a great job again!

Well the entire film is garbage, so it’s no wonder the colour grading is off as well 😛

When I watched the movie the colors were all over the place. I can’t help wondering how pink the interior of the star destroyers look. They were pink to begin with and needed every shred of yellow to not look bad. And that wasn’t the only scene like that.

Does anyone else have the UHD release? It seems to me that the yellow cast is WAY more pronounced in the UHD version than the regular BD.

I’ve looked at it on two different setups so I’m pretty sure it’s not my calibration that’s off.

The UHD has the yellow and green tint too

What I’m saying is that the yellow/green tint is even more pronounced on the UHD.

I can’t post screenshots as there’s no way to properly screenshot HDR images but flicking back and forth between the BD and the UHD shows that the UHD definitely has more of a green cast with the BD being closer to how I remember the movie looking in the cinema.
