^ Thought they were insightful and gave a good feeling for what they were going with and just how certain scenes are selected and then shot. Also, the work that goes into them - some very talented people there behind the scenes - and all the stuff goes into making the film that never actually makes it to screen (designs, concepts, models, scenes etc).

Really enjoyed the Director & The Jedi & the Balance Of The Force content.

I’ve watched The Director and the Jedi twice. I love it. My favorite Star Wars documentary is still Empire of Dreams, and my favorite making-of documentary is Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner, but The Director and the Jedi is really great.

Another week to go, I’ve tried to keep away from all the small clips of it that are online lately.

Anyone else watch the special features yet? I thought they were really good. Definitely enjoyed how they’ve actually gone a bit deeper into the meat and potatoes of this one. I only wish there was more, I mean, come on. They had a documentary crew on set everyday, it’d be great to see some more of that material. I’m not saying we necessarily needed LOTR appendices level content, but I mean yeah that amount would’ve been cool.

Had some time this afternoon and watched them all. Some great things. I never really like watching deleted scenes (I need the context of the surrounding scenes I think), but everything else was pretty great. Really enjoyed the director and the Jedi.

Anyone else unable to play the Blu on a Sony player? Apparently this has been a problem for Disney titles as of late. I have an S-1200, latest firmware from 2014.

It loads what looks like a menu image, dings, but no menu options come up.

Exactly what happened to me. Had no idea it was a widespread issue.

Not enough people read the EU.

per a suggestion on the blu-ray.com forums, I turned off 24p output on the BD player. Now it works.

That you have to turn that off is ridiculous in the first place. They probably instituted some new copy protection scheme that isn’t compatible with older players.

Probably. But what doesn’t make sense to me is that 24p settings have anything to do with copy protection schemes.

Thoughts on third viewing:

I love this movie. I really do. When I saw it in the theater, I took three major issues though. Some of the comedy, the casino, and I thought Yoda looked a little funny. Seeing it at home:

  1. I don’t mind the humor so much anymore; though a lot of this probably has to do with it no longer being new. I see it coming and just take it.
  2. Though I enjoy it visually, a lot of the casino sequence still feels like a waste of time. Them being chased around by that rich guy who was mad they parked on the beach was really dumb.
  3. Yoda looked fine. In fact, he looked great. I think for me it must’ve been the effect of seeing him (properly) for the first time on the big screen. Scrutinizing every detail. On my home screen, he looked about right. I think the camera angles are a little different than we’re used to from ROTJ and ESB, so maybe that makes him look a little different. Also, his color looks a little darker. But he’s also being filmed in the dead of night and it’s raining and he has an aura around him, so of course he won’t looked exactly as he did on Dagobah.

The plot of course isn’t without its contrivances. But nor are any of the other movies. All in all really enjoyable ride.

Ok, so I got the 4K Blu-Ray, and the Dolby vision and the Dolby Atmos are really good IMO! The color is somewhat muted (which was my experience in the cinema, but I thought it was just because of the projector) which took me a little while to get used to, but after I did, this movie was really a treat in 4K. The cinematography is just stunning, I think the hdr could have been a little bit better and same goes with the Atmos track. But I am so happy that the first Star Wars movie to come to 4K has a gorgeous looking transfer. (Oh and it’s real 4K too, so no upscaling here!)

The regular BD plays fine on my Sony player. My UHD player is a Samsung, so I can’t speak to the 4k disc. I had a similar issue with the Planet of the Apes BDs, though. Wouldn’t play past the Lawgiver intro on my Sony player after a certain firmware update, but worked fine on my PS4 (haven’t tried watching them on the Samsung player yet, but the internet says it’s a problem specific to Sony players so I’m assuming they’ll be fine).
