Movies Seen In Theaters From Before You Were Born — Page 3

I did that. More like $10, but it also came with A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. Though I’d see a film-print projection if I had the chance.

Or buy a blu-ray copy for six dollars and watch it in the comfort of your own home.

This is the single worst piece of advice I’ve heard anyone give.

Yeah, especially since the 4K Blu-ray is coming out later this year.

Not if you have a theater in your house…

I would love to see a 70 mm film someday. As it is the projector and screen in my living room already look better than the local theater. (I would imagine because they are both digital, and since the screen size is considerably smaller-120 inches-the image is allowed to sharper but because it’s in my living room obviously I’m closer to it so to my perspective it “looks” as big as a theater screen, close anyway. But I’m sure it’s no match for 70 mm.

Well it sounds like everyone’s going to get a crack at it in a few weeks, at least in the US. I’ve been seeing stuff about upcoming 70mm screenings for the 50th anniversary beginning in mid-May.

Would see again, even though the showing I went to was only a few months ago. An all time classic. (plus it was almost sold out and I got a bad seat).

Did the same thing with Lawrence two summers ago. Saw the DCP at the Coolidge in June, then found out they had a print in Somerville in September and couldn’t not go for it.

I’m gonna be mad if 2001 doesn’t show somewhere in Minneapolis. I think that’s the farthest my Mom would drive me (said the person who should already have a job and a license and car by his age).

Presumably at home you don’t have to listen to some disgusting slob chomp on popcorn right next to your ear while the disgusting sick person snorts snot back up her nose in your other ear while screaming kids’ cries fill the theatre because their disgusting parents couldn’t be bothered to pay a babysitter twenty bucks instead of bringing them to the theater. And then the film will come off the real. What a great experience to spend fifty dollars on.

I will never as long as I live understand the appeal of movie theaters.

I can’t imagine why the disgusting slob type crowd would be filling a theater to see 2001 in 70mm.

Pretty much this, and true 70mm in a proper theater is something to behold.

It’s something I would like to behold for the first time in my life, and 2001’s 50th seems like the most special occasion for me to grab a chance at it. If it comes anywhere near the empty void known as North Dakota.

EDIT: And another point to the theatrical experience, I’ve been to seven films in theaters since 2015, all of which would be considered more popular to the average crowd, and I never ran into annoyances caused by others in the audience. Literally the only problems were caused by the actual theater.

Most people don’t hate being in the company of other people.

Exactly. Not even remotely comparable to an at home blu-ray viewing, even if you have a 120" screen.

I’ve been to theaters somewhere around a hundred times since 2015, and same for me. There’ve been a couple times with some rowdy audiences members, but nothing movie-ruining (and percentage-wise, not too bad considering).

Saw that DCP at the Brattle, which is a theater I generally love though didn’t feel right for an epic of that scale. Been itching to see it on 70mm, missed a chance recently, hopefully I’ll get another soon.

North Dakota is actually one of my favorite states. It’s peaceful and I loved the time I spent there.

But at home you can lay on your couch with a pillow and a blanket. That’s a big draw for me.

My theater experiences are at about a 60:40 in terms of the bad audience to decent audience ratio.

Oh, I do love living here. It’s just that stuff rarely happens here other than rock band tours, so the closest location of interest is Minneapolis. I’m happy that where I live, the chances of a natural disaster ruining my home are virtually zero.

The only shitty audiences I’ve had to deal with for the last few years have been for indie horror flicks like It Follows and The Witch, and even then it was more an issue of people complaining loudly during the credits that “it wasn’t even scary” than about disturbing others during the movie itself.
