But you don’t need a 100" screen to see a difference, I’d say anything from 50" upwards is going to treat your eyes to very obvious, unambiguous next level visuals when compared to 1080p.

For the HDR yes. As far as actually being able to see a difference in fine detail from 4k on a 50 inch at, I would say that’s very unlikely.

We’ve got to wait until the 9th April here in the UK . Not happy 😦

Here in Germany we have got to wait until the 26th April. 😦

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

Oooooooh fuuuuuuuuuuudge (only I didn’t say fudge). I’m in France and I just looked up our release date here: 20 April. I think I’ll just order from Amazon.co.uk

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Sure! If you have a 100 inch screen in your house. 😛

I’m surprised to read a dismissive comment about 4K on this site. I thought OT forum was very much built around wanting the very best ‘technical’ presentation of Star Wars, from sound, to accurate colour representation, to resolution - aren’t these technical aspects fundamental to Originaltrilogy.com? Or do forum members actually not care that much?

I care, but 4K for home use is primarily a scheme to get me to buy a new 4K tv, a new 4K player, a new 4K ready receiver, etc. Half of what’s on the format is simply upscaled from 2K. Pixar doesn’t even render their films at 4K.

And don’t even get me started on 30 year old movies with questionable Atmos remixes and no original mix option in sight. I’m not about to drill holes in the ceiling of a 40 year old house to put Atmos speakers above me, either.
The displays I’ve seen in stores look very nice, but they just don’t look like film to me. I imagine a lot of crap in the tv has to be switched off to get a film like image though.

When a restored non buggered OOT is on 4k, wake me. 2001 and The Shining might get me to budge as well. I am getting a bit long in the tooth to consider rebuying all my favorite movies again on a for a third time.
Thankfully, I’ll probably be too old to care when 8K comes along. 😉

I was glad to see your comments of 4K not looking like film. I agree. Many films or TV programs I’ve seen in 4K have the soap opera look to it…kinds like 60 fps with LOTR did for me.

That’s a separate issue called motion smoothing.

That’s the TV with all its motion interpolation and other image processing turned on, not the 4K source material. Turn all that shit off and turn your sharpness down to zero and it’ll look like film, as long as it’s a good transfer/master. But the soap opera effect is 100% the TV’s motion interpolation.

Ugh I forgot all about those Hobbit movies and that HFR gimmick. Is that idea dead? I hope so…

That’s good to know…that being said I have no immediate plans on buying a new TV. I’m very happy with my setup.

‘Mega Destroyer Incursion’ deleted scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3yPL5tVo_E

What a wonderful and expansive set! Real shame this scene didn’t stay in (at least the first part until the doors close). Must have been some serious $ dollars to shoot this scene, with the scale and all the extras, left on the cutting room floor.

The Officer in the white uniform is a good British TV character actor too, he had a recurring role in Ricky Gervais The Office.

LOL! That was great. Funny and tense at the same time. Pity they cut it.

The soap opera effect has held back cinema by decades. If we hadn’t had low-quality TV presented in a watchable frame rate for the past fifty years then people would stop complaining about movies filmed at anything faster than the horribly juddery 24 fps looking “cheap”. Give me 48+ fps any day.

They told me they’d fixed it!

Held back from what? Ugliness?

Wait, trimboNZ… New Zealand? Defending HFR filming… are you PETER JACKSON‽

48fps doesn’t seem like enough for high frame rate. If you’re gonna go in, you should go all in. I’m still disappointed I missed Billy Lynn in 120fps, that sounds more like it.

Douglas Trumbull’s 70mm Showscan format used 60fps. Saw it used at a now extinct attraction at the Luxor in Las Vegas, and it was very impressive at creating the illusion of live actors rear projected onto a talk show set. Only the minor nicks and scratches any film gets with use gave it away.

Heh, no. But I also defend the use of sound and colour in film, even though they have been said to detract from a real cinema experience.

Neither is smooth motion but that doesn’t stop people complaining about it.

You’ve undermined your thesis that people are merely conditioned to like lower frame rates. People readily accepted talkies and color.

Not even slightly. Both colour and talkies were fiercely resisted at first. Chromophobia was the popular position among artists of the time. Of course, all three advances make the films appear closer to real life and therefore further diminish the illusion of stepping away from reality for two hours. Amusingly the same happened to a lesser extent with the migration of television to HD - people complained how sharp and fake it looked.

But I’ve probably derailed this thread long enough. Do you think we’re likely to see more weaponized hyperdrives in canon now?

They will only do more hyperspace attacks with ships if the frame rate goes higher.

But I can imagine JJ making a hyperdrive missile because it’s powerful and cool.
