The absolute best use of this would be to take the face of ESB Yoda and put it over TLJ Yoda.

Quick Photoshop attempt;

I want some of what bottom Yoda’s smoking.

Wow, it actually looks pretty good.

I don’t see much difference, myself.

Neither Leia nor Tarkin bothered me in RO though,

Tarkin was quite well done, but Leia was pretty bad.

Not sure if the puppet face would look good in a CGI character, but worth a try.

Sorry, but no. I’m not entirely anti-Special Edition. There were places where simple updating of the f/x was effective (e.g., the Death Star battle). Sure, back in the day they were limited to either a Muppet or a made-over midget for a character like Yoda. Having gone with the Muppet option, a justified, and effective, modernization would have been CGI.

Which is why, given what Lucas was willing to change - such as Greedo shooting first - it was absolutely absurd to me that he didn’t CGI Yoda’s mouth movements (not the whole Muppet), which had already been proven to work so well in Babe. This limited CG option would’ve worked well for the prequels too (for the Nemoidians also, not just for Yoda).

Frink and a few close associates are the only ones who’ve expressed a particular dislike for anime. Their dislike was so strong, though, that it became a running joke for a while to mock the stuff.

Well, add me to the Frink-and-friends faction! 😉

hey man anime can be fucking cool dont hate

edit: Most of it is garbage to be fair. Or I’m just trash enough to enjoy some of it.

Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Evangelion if you’re in the mood to be depressed for about a month afterward…

Yeah, that’s about all I can come up with when it comes to anime I’ve enjoyed. (TV I mean, I’m not counting films.)

What?! Leia looked absolutely perfect. It’s Tarkin that was a little off.

Nope, Leia looked waxy and fake, as if a corpse had spontaneously resuscitated in her casket at the funeral home. Also, her chin and mouth area looked a little bloated, not a match for Carrie Fisher’s. The lighting was also off, thus failing to match the lighting in the room.

That’s because it’s a “quick photoshop attempt”.

Here’s a slightly less quick photoshop attempt I made where I overlayed parts of old Yoda on new Yoda:

I think I can make this work in the movie with After Effects rather than FakeApp.

The problem with Tarkin for me was that it was just unnecessary. Guy Henry looks enough like Peter Cushing that I think they could have got away with a hair-piece, prosthetics, and some CGI to shrink him slightly and age up that lower jaw.

Oh, I agree that “resurrecting” Cushing wasn’t necessary. And yet, I appreciated and enjoyed the effort. But I had the opposite reaction to cartoony CGI Leia.

The upper lip is my only real issue with the TLJ puppet. Possibly also the way the mouth scrunches together when closed, but that might just be an extension of the upper lip issue.

Yep, I agree. The puppet is pretty great otherwise, but the mouth is so important for his appearance. It looks like he lost his teeth.

Yeah. Yoda’s upper lip barely moves if at all so theoretically I’m after effects you should be able to just track ESB nose&mouth onto TLJ Yoda’s face and voila.

That is some complicated tracking though.

Hence my argument that a muppet should be used for Yoda, but with CGI mouth movements. In fact, I see no reason the same approach couldn’t be taken with a host of characters that are either animatronics or actors with prosthetics. The Nemoidians are examples of the latter, and while they were lame characters anyway, because of the writing, at the very least they would have looked better if their mouths had been animated.

The issue is not that it was a puppet mouth, the issue was that the mouth was the wrong shape and size comparative to ESB&ROTJ

The Nemoidians have animatronic faces, I think they work pretty well. And I don’t mind Yoda’s puppet mouth in ESB, it just has the wrong shape in TLJ.

{Shrug} Well, to each their own. Me, all I’m after is visual believability. Muppet-mouth ain’t it. (Mind you, Yoda became a bore soon after Luke found out who he is.)
