I’m not sure if this is the right thread for what I’m about to say, so if there’s a thread for something like this, please point the way!

Rewatching ESB for probably the 50,000,000th time, I actually noticed something weird about one scene in particular. Right when Darth Vader says “No, I am your father”, pay close attention to him. I can’t really describe what it is, but it’s the way he moves as he says that immortal line. It’s very subtle, but if you look closely, you’ll notice it.

I’m not sure if that’s David Prowse moving with the rushing wind or if it’s something from the editing process. And the only thing that comes to mind seeing him move like this is that it could probably be something called the “forward-reverse technique”. I say that because it reminds me of when the technique was used for the scene in that godawful “Batman & Robin” movie when Robin comes out of the water and goes right back in again. Only with ESB, it wasn’t as colossally (and painfully) obvious.

I don’t know if I’m the only one who sees this or if I’m just rambling about nothing, but if anybody has the answer to this, I sure would appreciate it because I keep thinking it’s a Special Edition change until I watched the Grindhouse Edition and noticed the subtle movement there. So I’m guessing it’s been there since 1980. So really, my question is what the heck it is?

I, too, have noticed that shot.

This “rock and roll” trick was discussed, lightly, on the “Empire of Dreams” documentary, but for a shot in ANH. At the 56:03 mark of the documentary, editor Paul Hirsh said that he had to “rock” the final few frames of a medium shot of a Tusken Raider “back and forth” so that the shot appears that the sandperson was raising his weapon-stick up-and-down several times instead of just raising it up once as it was originally filmed.

Getting back to Vader and ESB, my theory is this: given what we know of that shot, David Prowse in the Vader suit says the line, “obi wan killed your father” during the filming. To keep Luke and Vader’s blood relations a secret, the shot was kept intact throughout the post-production stages until James Earl Jones reads Luke true parentage. Using dramatic pauses between “I…” and “…am your father” in Jones’ delivery, the filmmakers like the reading but they didn’t want to edit down the recording, so the editor extended the shot to fit the recording by using the said “back and forth” trick.

Someone asked me something interesting regarding what official releases need to be owned before getting the Despecialized Editions.

Apparently, some countries like Hong Kong and the Philippines had DVD-only versions of the 2011 Special Editions which were the basis for the Despecialized Editions.

She asked me if one is legally allowed to download the Despecialized Editions if she owns the 2011 Special Editions on DVD but not Blu-ray.
And if so, is she allowed to download any version or just the DVD5 version?

And, if she bought the digital releases but only in SD, is she allowed to download any version of the Despecialized Edition or only the DVD5 version?

Please give me answers for my friend who wants to dip into the Despecialized Editions.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

You’re so right.

I think she can download any version but I am not sure this is more of a harmy question.

If it is an official DVD release from Lucasfilm, then yes. You can legally obtain the Despecialized Editions if you have bought a still-on-sale version of the Star Wars Trilogy.

Your friend is seemingly mistaken - the blu rays of the Original Trilogy are available in Hong Kong, and other places across Asia. There is also a regional version with Traditional Chinese, Korean, Thai subtitles:-

https://www.play-asia.com/star-wars-the-complete-saga/13/709p2p

https://www.yesasia.com/global/star-wars-the-complete-saga-blu-ray-hong-kong-version/1046170147-0-0-0-en/info.html

and are also available on many ebay / online market type places too - considerably cheaper…

A quick look at ‘The Ultimate Introductory Guide’ (Section 1: Introduction) - states…

‘Remember, as with any fan edit, YOU MAY ONLY DOWNLOAD THIS PROJECT IF YOU ARE A LEGAL OWNER OF THE OFFICIAL SOURCE. For Harmy’s DE project, this means YOU MUST OWN AN OFFICIAL HD RELEASE for each respective film (i.e. Star Wars Episodes IV, V, & VI), such as the official Blu-ray Disks or digital purchase.’

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I would also chime in with regards to the following:

She asked me if one is legally allowed to download the Despecialized Editions if she owns the 2011 Special Editions on DVD but not Blu-ray.

I don’t know anything about actual copyright law in Hong Kong (aside from the fact that in the West, we tend to perceive it as lax, with pirated material easily accessible, etc). But in any case, our rules here are not meant to be interpreted as something that represents the law in any jurisdiction whatsoever. It’s a self-imposed moral code, that is firmly requested/demanded of people who acquire Despecialized. And a requirement of the forum.

If she is indeed interested in what the law says about it, you should consult a better resource than us.

The rule is if you want Despecialized in HD, you need to own the official release in HD. If you only own an SD official release, you can download the DVD5 version. As others said though, it’s a moral-based code of conduct - there’s no way of enforcing it and it doesn’t make it officially legal in any case.

This question, it tasks me…

Once we’re sure everyone outside of Harmy is done editing it, we can share the link. I’d do it now but I’m not sure.

Report the listing on ebay for selling bootlegs - and put the link here, so others can report him too.

OK, so I locked the editing access to the spreadsheet:

If the people, who helped me create it could, please, PM me their email addresses, I will add them, so they can still edit the sheet, if needed. Thanks 😃

Also, I’d like to make a video, showing me making the first few v3.0 shots, which would introduce my new workflow and how the spreadsheet will be used in it.
Can anyone recommend a good screen-capture software, that will be able to handle two 4K monitors, ideally saving each to its own video file, and won’t slow the computer down too much?

Another thing I could use some opinions on is what image file format to use for the image sequences.

Also, how can I load an image sequence into avisynth?

OK, say my image sequence is ESB-R1-S00500-0001.dpx - ESB-R1-S00500-0128.dpx - what exactly will the line in the script read?

Exciting! Maybe an idea to start a separate thread for the V3.0 version?
