I thought the thread might actually be a discussion, but it’s mostly people getting mad and repeating meme talking points. And its also quite one-sided–it’s the side I agree with so that’s nice for me but not much of a discussion lol.

You’ve obviously not read the entire thread yet.

I’d like to know what expectations you have.

I desparately hoped there would be:
-no namecalling
-no projecting
-no generalizations
But I expected to find all of this, and I did. So I won’t be participating in this thread. Hate and vitriol gives me negative energy.

Most political discourse isn’t discourse at all, it’s kabuki theatre. For example, getting mad at what some California state legislature said is not relevant to politics at all (the science of passing policy). It’s just theatre.

There is often wisdom in not saying something with no real purpose. cough cough Actually, stay, you will fit in well 😉

I agree about hate and vitriol being draining. One purpose of the thread is simply to vent. Another is to bring issues to others’ attention. And in between there are some interesting discussions/“socializing”. I try to keep it light and frothy much as I can. I’m here at the OT for the Star Wars primarily. You can always post in the potato thread. That’s a good one. I adore potatoes in a way that some may find unnatural. The self-control I exercise by staying out of there is tremendous.

Haha!

And sorry if anyone took my post as being too angry at people, I was probably dumb to expect anything less for a politics thread.

All are welcome to ignore my idiotic and nonsensical posts. Though if you like posters who end up saying nothing at all, please read every word of each of my posts. Study my ways, and let me train you.

Your posts aren’t idiotic and nonsensical, they’re more like YA posts.

You say that and then you post this:

Scrolling through this and…Lol, I have never seen such a shallow, circle jerk thread.

this could be considered naming calling and making generalizations.

But I expected to find all of this, and I did. So I won’t be participating in this thread.

Considering what we’ve seen of you so far, that just might be a good thing.

He is. Sorry I posted anything 😦

Also, I’m sorry for some of the language I used. I had just seen some really nasty posts and was posting emotionally myself. I don’t swear irl but sometimes when you get emotional you say stuff you didn’t mean.

Ok so I’ve gotten to the very well thought out conclusion that Trump is not a decent man at all. I used to think, back when I was living in Brazil, that much of the criticism directed at him was sensationalized or exaggerated by the media, but apparently I was wrong. The man is basically a jerk. His tweets, for example, don’t even belong in the worst of our threads. Honestly, to think that some Star Wars fans, as insane as we are, discussing passionately about Star Wars can be more civilized than the president of the world’s greatest country is… I don’t even know. Disappointing? I guess. Can’t seem to find a more appropriate word for it. Repulsive?

I’d say politically I’m more leaned towards the left, so I’ve always been “biased” against Trump. I’ve always criticized most of his policies and ideas, but I just thought he was more attacked than usual or more than he deserved. It is sad to see I was wrong.

One of the craziest things is that he actually isn’t attacked enough.

I know you didn’t mean it to sound so grandiose but to me, casually reading from a country that’s not the US, having to see this really doesn’t endear you to me.

Sweet Christmas.

I don’t mean best, I mean biggest almost in terms of land but certainly in terms of influence and such.

I think to be fair, I should point out that many people who are equally horrible human beings understand enough about decency to appear to be decent in public. What’s so unusual about Trump is that he showcases his awfulness as if it were a badge of honor. Remember when they caught Dahmer et al, people were always saying “He seemed nice, kinda quiet”. If Trump eventually gets convicted of anything, people will say, “Well, sure, we knew that all along, that’s why we voted for him”.

Also, personal likeability is overrated for elected officials. I remember the old media standard “Sure, Gore’s smart and all, but people would rather have a beer with Bush”. To some degree, being a cold fish or even kinda gloomy and unpleasant doesn’t matter. It’s once that unpleasantness crosses the line into demonstrating that you are disconnected from any sort of ethical foundation that it becomes a problem IMO.

To me, that line has already been crossed by President Trump a while ago.

Oh sure, I agree absolutely. It was crossed before he even won the primary. The problem is that lots of valid criticisms of his unsuitability for the office are mixed in with things that merely make him thoroughly unpleasant, and they’re not always the same thing.

I agree with both points. My statement was not about his ability for the office though, but about how he sucks as a person, and like you said, he’s apparently proud of it.

American politics have been hideous for as long as I’ve been paying attention to them. Every single candidate has been characterized as extreme, dumb, and evil. Viewing it from the right, I witnessed extreme unfairness toward GW Bush, McCain, and Romney. And those on the left saw much the same directed toward their candidates/presidents. So while I see a difference between Trump and those previous candidates/presidents, the reaction is basically what I’d expect no matter who was elected.

I’ve become disillusioned about it all. When Republicans nominate someone else, we will still hear how that person is extreme, dumb, and evil (and basically the same, or worse than Trump). In between presidencies we have people wearing dumb hats and yelling.

Was Hillary characterized as extreme, dumb, and evil? Was Jeb[!]? Kasich?

I should have said nominee rather than candidate. Hillary was primarily characterized as extreme and evil. The adjectives vary but the same idea is there. Jeb and Kasich had reputations as moderate, mostly by comparison and by a lack of focus. Kasich is a loon. Even Jeb would have been tarred as dangerous had he been the nominee.

I am from the future.
