Right, exactly (actually while evoking the “I sense something, but don’t have a face to express emotion”). Not the same thing as snarky “look back over the shoulder while delivering a zinger” deal.

… but I cannot help but think Gareth Edwards was paying MAJOR homage to Spaceballs with Rogue One. There are so many callbacks its hard to count them all. From the obvious like the planet shield and shieldgate to more subtle elements like the shield code scene (I was on the edge of my seat waiting for “1-2-3-4-5”). There’s more, but I have to go back and think again.

So I might have exaggerated juuusst a bit on my assessment of how many Spaceballs callbacks there were. I went back and re-watched the movie again and in addition to the two major (and very obvious) callbacks mentioned above, I identified the following:

  • At 00:22:50 - Responding to Krennic, Tarkin says “When has become now, Director Krennic…”
  • At 1:36:57 - Cassian says “This is not working, K!” to which K-2SO responds “Right Hand” followed by Cassian and Jyn manhandling a limp hand onto a handprint identification scanner to gain access to the file vault.

I’m pretty sure Gareth Edwards is a pretty big Spaceballs fan.

Does Mel Brooks know?

He does but couldn’t reach Edwards because Disney fired Edwards first.

What my mind jumped to when I connected Mel Brooks with Edwards getting ‘pushed out’ of his own movie:

Poor Franz.

And I can not accept Prequel and Rogue One Vader.

Could you please explain why? I mean R1 (as problems with Prequels-Vader are pretty much obvious). All I hear from people is “daddy’s joke”.

Let’s put that joke aside (which is just as perversely cruel as ESB “apologies accepted” / “Perhaps you think you are being treated unfairly?” and so on, so I don’t see a problem here) and let’s ignore the hallway scene (although I’ll have to use all my willpower not to talk about a scene that got burned in my memory forever).

What’s so great about R1 Vader for me? Well, what’s so great about Vader anyway, "shouldn’t people stop idolizing a villain?"
Despite all the ruthlessness, he still seems to follow some knightly codex. And since ESB we believe “there’s good in him”.

R1 does reinforce his mysterious line from ANH and could hint to its meaning.
“Don’t be too proud of this technological terror you’ve constructed”
^^ why doesn’t the main villain like their brand-new superweapon, eh?
“A city destroyed!”, he says in R1 and then turns his back to Krennic.
Guilt, remorse… perhaps? Did you notice it? Strange, I didn’t find any oh-so-smrt reviewer analyzing this bit!
Remember “we can end this destructive conflict” from ESB?

The Vader I believe in (and thus I reject the prequels) had sworn allegiance to the Emperor/Empire believing it to be the lesser evil (prequels failed to show us that the Clone Wars were horrible and forming an empire sounded like a last chance to save the civilized galaxy from certain doom), especially after being brainwashed by Palpatine.
He won’t show mercy to the rebels, but mass killing civilians… maybe this filled him with doubts?

I find R1 Vader pretty much in-character.

I agree with all of the above.

Those aren’t stupid puns.

Those aren’t stupid puns, the R1 joke is.
The lava planet scene is bad. The pun. The swishy way he walks. The way he wags his finger in Kenricks face. Oh so sassy, but not so Vader.
I love the rest of the stuff with him in R1 though.

Vader should have said “Needa hand there, Captain?” to stay in character. Maybe the 4K SE will add extra puns.

I agree with RRS-1980’s thoughts. And why does it matter that his joke is specifically a pun? It’s WELL established he is wryly sarcastic and uses incredibly cruel humor to rub his subordinates’ noses in their own failures. So that’s all ok but only if it’s NOT a pun? Why is Vader limited in what type of cruel jokes he’s “allowed” to make?

I’m admittedly biased b/c R1 is now firmly my third favorite Star Wars movie closely behind SW and ESB. But I think they did a GREAT job with Vader in R1. My only criticism is he does look a little off sometimes in the scene with Krennic both in movement and the way the costume fits. But it’s been decades since the OT was filmed and they obviously had to make a new costume and find a new actor. I think they did a great job recreating Vader from the OT in all respects. I mean, even the shots where he looks a little “off” aren’t THAT bad. Nothing like how lame he looked in ROTS.

A stupid pun that a five year-old came up with is unbecoming of the evil villain in the dour war movie that Rogue One is trying to be. I don’t understand why anyone likes that joke. It seems like a lot of people have the idea that in order to enjoy a movie they have to like, defend, and justify every single aspect of it.

I liked his pun. I didn’t care for the dour tone though, except for in the final act.

I don’t think so. I don’t love the idea of Star Destroyers entering atmospheres, the Evazan cameo, or the lack of Moroff screen time to name just a few. It’s not a perfect film at all, but it’s still a film that I really love.

And I really dig Vader in this movie and enjoy discussing and debating his appearance in it.

Yes. This is exactly the level the R1 pun is on. Vader didn’t talk like that.

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I don’t think Vader’s actual pun is nearly as lame as that. In fact, I think it sounds very much like something he’d have said in the OT (particularly reminiscent of “apology accepted” as he flipping KILLS the guy…) and have no problem with it.

The way I feel about it is that the difference between the OT puns and the R1 pun is that Vader made a pun related to choking while he was choking Krennic, therefore I interpret that the joke was meant to be funny if someone else was there in the room with them. That was not the case with the disturbing lack of faith of the accepted apology, he was just being intimidating in both cases.

High fives a fellow Moroff fan

I think the idea that a Star Destroyer can enter the atmosphere has been around a while. The old making of ESB paperback mentions a scene that never made the final cut where the Rebel troops on Hoth look up to see a SD overhead. And we’ve never seen exactly how Imperial Walkers are dispatched.

I thought they were dispatched by hitting the little glowing box near their neck, or hitting any part of them approx. 1000 times.

We haven’t, though in TLJ you can see walker transport ships in the hangar on the Supremacy.

As for a star destroyer in the atmosphere, I’m not sure I understand that complaint.

Almost impossible on the Intellivision port of the game, IIRC. I blame sloppy programming. 😛

One of the IMPS fan films depicts an Aliens style drop off, only on a bigger scale.

I always thought it was depicted as a giant version of the lander from ANH97. Can’t remember where exactly.

Proving that sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one, Tony Gilroy confirms that the reshoots were done primarily because the film wasn’t that good:

He seems to be pretty tight lipped in regards to Edwards and directing, though it sounds like they were more interested in fixing things rather than the nitty gritty of who’s the “director,” and ultimately he just sort of gradually became the go to guy by the end of it.

He throws Edwards under the bus pretty hard there, while Edwards has no way of defending himself since his version will never be released.
