I’ll probably put on darthrush edit since I haven’t finished mine yet and won’t tell her it’s an edit. The only thing I really don’t like about rotj is some of the cheese at jabbas palace and the ewoks are just slightly too much. When it delivers, it delivers.

Agreed. I like the cutlist I see of that edit (minus no eyebrows). I should watch it sometime.
I assume you showed her the Despecialized Editions of the other two?

No a custom hybrid version I made for anh and revisited for ESB. I’ll be making a custom ESB also and an edit of rotj too but she’s ready to watch them so I can’t wait.

I’m not telling her anything about that lol I’m not saying a word about them not being the real versions.

If she’s curious about the prequels you can show her Frink’s edits and tell her they’re the real thing too.

I can’t believe you did that.

I don’t see how it’s that unreasonable. It’s the way I prefer to watch them but a conversation about which version of the film we’re watching would not interest her in any way so there was no point in mentioning it. She does seem really taken with the whole thing but she’s also a normal girl in her early twenties so I doubt the official SEs would have bothered her anyway and she probably wouldn’t even notice if she decided to rewatch them herself sometime.

Lol tempting but I’d probably go for octorox for 1 and 2 and nfbisms for 3 once it’s done. But I’m kindof avoiding talking about the prequels so far and am just trying to subtly steer her into wanting to just press on to the st.

Just watched Star Wars with my girlfriend for the first time. She loved it. Remarkably not only has she never seen it but also knows nothing about it, not even the characters or story or themes. It’s such an amazing experience getting to watch it with somebody that is experiencing it with new unspoiled eyes and ears. Like she doesn’t even know that

SPOILER

darth Vader is Luke’s father =)

so she’s gonna be thrown for a loop in the next one and I can’t wait to see her reaction.

She loves it. I had to make her promise not to Google the next one. This is an experience I honestly thought I would never get to have unless it was with a child. Never thought I would get to do this with an adult. I mean sure plenty of adults haven’t seen it but few don’t know at least some of the story bits.

She doesn’t know if she believes Vader is Luke’s father or not. But she loved TESB. And getting to experience her hearing Vader say he is Luke’s father when she actually didn’t see it coming or expect it was a thrill I can’t describe. It was like I could feel the suspense in the air coming off of her and I suddenly had the feeling of wonder like it was my first time.

She was blown away. She loved the first one also but she didn’t expect this one to be good just purely on the grounds that it was a sequel.

Is she wondering what Yoda meant when he said ”no, there is another”?

What edits were made in these editions? What are you going to do I this custom ESB?

This is something I was curious about how someone would react to without knowing the Leia and Luke brother/sister thing.

By custom I just mean oot/se hybrid. New special effects kept, dialogue changes and extra scenes or anything that changes characters put back.

She didn’t say anything about “the other” so I don’t know.

Look what site you’re on. No one should ever see anything but the original movies first.

Good thing I’m just watching movies with my girlfriend and not caring about other people’s opinions on how I do it then or else I might have a problem!

She’s a normal twenty year old girl. Not a film buff. The history and significance doesn’t mean shit to her. She just wanted to experience the story and adventure that she’s always heard about. I made sure she watched a version where Han shoots first and there’s no Jabba scene or cgi slapstick or animals walking in front of the camera. R2D2 didn’t taste very good, Vader’s shuttle was brought, and the wampa was left to the imagination. As for everything else, I really doubt she would be super concerned with matte lines or matte paintings or different composites of shots or anything else so she might as well see it in the best video quality possible. I’ll be sure to tell her this guy on a forum I go to says she watched the wrong version though, I’m sure she’ll feel super regretful.

I’m not a film buff either. But ok.

Hey, that matte line you didn’t know about until three years ago that was removed in the special edition is revisionism and a crime against our shared culture on the same level as the Jedi Rocks dance scene.

If it’s not too late could you ask? This is a setup I’ve never heard anyone react to without the ROTJ spoiler and I doubt I’ll be able to find anything on it online since the Vader reveal is the more common one.

I’ll ask her.

Update: She thinks it’s Leia anyway even without knowing she’s his sister because of them communicating with the force at the end.

She also thought Luke was going to die because she thought Vader was being literal when he said “He will join us or die, master” to the emperor like he had a vision about it or something.

This is what everyone I’ve shown the movies to came away with too. A couple of em even called it when the communication thing happened. "OOH! So she’s gotta be “the other”, right?"
That she’s also Luke’s sister was a groaner almost every time. I’m interested to find out how she takes that one.

She probably will just go with it. She’s not the nerdy type, film or otherwise, and based on her reactions so far I’d say she’s pretty much sold on the whole thing already and is loving every bit of the ride. But then again it’s easy to feel that way when all you’ve seen is anh and ESB lol.

Author

I don’t think being the “nerdy type” has anything to do with finding the sibling thing silly.
The first timers I’ve shown the OT to had no interest or knowledge of Star Wars at all because they are very much not the nerdy type. Jabba’s Palace, Ewoks and Siblings were ridiculed every time.

So far her favorite characters are r2d2 and Yoda, so she seems to like little cutesy things so I doubt the ewoks will bother her. As for jabbas palace, I agree that it isn’t good but I think when cut down it could be okay. I did a cut of it a few months ago that I scrapped purely for technical reasons that I thought made it much more enjoyable and less silly. I don’t really change any events I just removed the musical number and cut out some cheesy close ups of the puppets and such .

Something irks me about not showing the unaltered films but I can’t put it into words at the moment.

Author
Time

I wouldn’t bother because I’m not really interested in hearing about how I’m doing the films and God above a disservice by showing her a “semi-special” edition and I honestly couldn’t care less about people’s opinion on what I show my girlfriend. I only even revealed that information because I was directly asked.
