If I thought someone had a gun and started shooting them and in the process killed someone else, I would immediately be thrown in jail.

You sure about that?

Author

Positive, especially if the person I was trying to shoot to death wasn’t even armed.

I dunno. I always thought that had Dan White murdered only Mayor Moscone, he’d have gotten the death penalty. But since he also murdered Milk, he got seven, reduced to five. Sometimes an extra murder makes the law more lenient than it would be for just the one.

Well a judge must have thought it a valid one. Cause some judge authorized a search warrant for such.

I haven’t read the Cato article but I think you’d understand what yhwx is saying if you did. The boy has sued the estate of the detective (who was found to have a prurient interest in children and killed himself) who sought the warrant. And in that case a court ruled the warrant was obviously inappropriate. No idea how the issuing judge justified issuance of the warrant.

The blue elephant in the room.

I didn’t realize the cop had a thing for children. That certainly puts a different spin on things.

I guess what I am saying is the judge should be sued as well.

I just did a little research. White got a reduced sentence because his lawyer was able to successfully argue diminished copacity.

What??? Since when?

That makes no sense.

He’s saying that he was able to get such a reduced sentence because they were sympathetic to him murdering Milk.

Because Milk was a homosexual?

Well, if you needed more proof that Trump is racist…

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/23/us/politics/trump-immigration.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

According to six officials who attended or were briefed about the meeting, Mr. Trump then began reading aloud from the document, which his domestic policy adviser, Stephen Miller, had given him just before the meeting. The document listed how many immigrants had received visas to enter the United States in 2017.

More than 2,500 were from Afghanistan, a terrorist haven, the president complained.

Haiti had sent 15,000 people. They “all have AIDS,” he grumbled, according to one person who attended the meeting and another person who was briefed about it by a different person who was there.

Forty thousand had come from Nigeria, Mr. Trump added. Once they had seen the United States, they would never “go back to their huts” in Africa, recalled the two officials, who asked for anonymity to discuss a sensitive conversation in the Oval Office.

Those who know Mr. Trump say that his attitude toward immigrants long predates his entry into politics.

“He’s always been fearful where other cultures are concerned and always had anxiety about food and safety when he travels,” said Michael D’Antonio, who interviewed him for the biography “The Truth About Trump.” “His objectification and demonization of people who are different has festered for decades.”

That’s an insult to toads! Some are quite respectable, although none appear to be very good drivers. 😛

Hey, Trump’s a liar too! I’m shocked!

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-mar-a-lago-christmas-trip/

President Trump kicked off his holiday weekend at Mar-a-Lago Friday night at a dinner where he told friends, “You all just got a lot richer,” referencing the sweeping tax overhaul he signed into law hours earlier. Mr. Trump directed those comments to friends dining nearby at the exclusive club — including to two friends at a table near the president’s who described the remark to CBS News — as he began his final days of his first year in office in what has become known as the “Winter White House.”

The president himself on Sept. 13 — long before the bill was finalized — said the wealthy would not benefit from the GOP tax overhaul.

“The rich will not be gaining at all with this plan. We are looking for the middle class and we are looking for jobs – jobs being the economy,” Mr. Trump said.

From the internet:

“The Supreme Court held in Pierson v. Ray that judges are protected by absolute immunity when they act in a judicial capacity, even if they act unconstitutionally.”

Somehow, that doesn’t seem right.

We have appeals courts, Warbler.

Since it is a Supreme Court ruling, the Supreme Court would have to overturn it.

We’re allowed to say Merry Christmas at Wal-Mart if anybody is concerned. Have for the three years we’ve worked here. There’s Christmas stuff all over that has the word “christmas” also.

We don’t require employees to say it if they aren’t comfortable though.

I can’t remember the last time I heard “Happy Holidays.” I’ve almost always heard the nerdy counterpart.

A piece on the gender pay gap.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/business/women-pay-gap/?utm_term=.81be36cf796a

That explains part of the difference in pay between men and women, but not all of it. And even though most economists agree that after adjusting for age, education, experience and other variables there’s still an unexplained gap, there are voices who argue that the gender pay gap is a myth.

Pay gap deniers purport that women’s choices, rather than discrimination, cause the pay gap between women and men. But those choices are actually consequences of the social forces at play.

Also, women of color get hit twice: they suffer the effects of the gender wage gap plus those of the race wage gap. While wages for White and Asian women have improved since 2007, salaries for Hispanic women have flatlined, and even declined for African American women.
