I just realized, this is the Star Wars film with the most swearing in it. Ranging from Ass to bastard. What next, shit?

If anything, I admire the amount of balls this movie had.
There’s no way the decisions made for this movie happened with everyone involved being unaware as to how pissed off and confused its own devout fanbase would be. Especially since it’s apparently been finished for a while. I know people are like “you shouldn’t have to analyze something to like something” but I think the unexpected (to say the least) choices in the story are meant to draw your attention to why they’re being done in the first place. And from that thematic perspective, I think the movie just works exceptionally well.
I can’t say I agree with every plot choice made here, and that I wasn’t disappointed by certain things, but I definitely think it came together in a much more poignant way than I was expecting. It really doesn’t feel like a Star Wars movie tbh. But I’m feeling more positive about that than negative.

Each OT film had the same general feel to them yet at the same time were each totally distinct. Thus far the ST has definitely had it’s own voice, separate from the OT, and with both movies having a distinct sense to them. Star Wars evolves, what really is the Star Wars feel anyway?

I don’t remember that but they also they said “cops” which took me out of the movie, too. Well, the whole casino scene did with all the slot machines, champagne etc.
Yeah, it was Laura Dern’s character that said “Godspeed”. I didn’t notice anybody saying “cops”, but I kept expecting Daniel Craig to show up during the casino scene.

What is a casino supposed to look like in the GFFA? The whole point was to show the decadence that’s taken root in the galaxy. In the prequels, slavery was going on in backwater worlds, much to Padme’s surprise. Here it’s happening on a nice clean civilized planet.
In movie elapsed time, the New Republic and billions of people were wiped out not that long ago, and it’s not affected business. Surprised the Hutts weren’t shown to be behind the whole operation. They’ve got to be running amok with nobody keeping them in check.
For all the references to money in past films, this is the first time we’ve seen currency. And Han Solo’s reward doesn’t count, as we never actually saw what was in those boxes.

Finn said cops when they were sneaking around the casino. Speaking of Daniel Craig, I just remembered that I had heard Tom Hardy was in this, but I didn’t catch him. Did notice the Gareth Edwards cameo though.

Yeah I dug all of that, even if I agree with the prevailing opinion that that portion of the film sagged just a tad.
The casino stuff pairs really nicely with Bloodline, actually.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Canto Bight(?) appears in the Solo movie. Great way for Disney to save money on sets! 😛

It’s far less conventionally Star Wars than TFA was, for better or worse. It was bold and gave me something to wrestle with in ways TFA didn’t.
I think my biggest criticism of it at this very early juncture is that it felt a bit too John McClain. (“Need a lift?” Yeeeehaaaaw”)
My best praise is that it contributed mythological meat to the ongoing saga.

Mark Hamill has been a seriously underrated actor for far too long. (Even though he’s probably the best incarnation of The Joker ever.) He played Mozart in Amadeus on Broadway, but likely wasn’t even considered for the film version because he’s forever identified with Luke in a way Harrison Ford doesn’t have to deal with having been both Han and Indy.
Mark just knocked it out of the park with this. I sincerely hope he gets an Oscar nomination. It would be a first for a Star Wars film?
I waited 34 years to see Luke back in action, and it was worth the wait.
No, Guiness got nominated for Obi-Wan in Star Wars for the 1978 Academy Awards.

Hi Collipso, I’m just signing up too. I just got out of school and I’m going to see the movie tonight! But I’m worried because if I post something bad about the movie, will I get banned? I’m scared because the same people keep posting over and over again like they want to harrass people who don’t agree with them. I hope it won’t happen to me! I hope I will like the new STAR WARS movie but I didn’t like the last one so I don’t know. These things keep getting worse all the time!

You won’t get banned for not liking the movie. You’ll get banned if you’re an asshole and hostile to others, regardless of your opinions. Many longtime members have expressed their dislike for TLJ so far, so you have nothing to worry about as long as you’re not a dick. 😃

There are many varied and differing opinions on here - some like the Prequels as much as the OT, others like the new films over ROTJ - some loathe R1 & TFA etc - whatever their preferences or viewpoints, they are all welcome.
Of course, members will likely be asked by others as to why they hold an opinion etc - and that’s where I think we can all learn a fair bit. We may still all disagree, but meh… who cares? Our liking, or love, for Star Wars is what brought us here - and our liking for Star Wars is hopefully greater than anything we don’t like about it.
