4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 238

Have you heard Disney could own Fox by next week so then they would be allowed to rerelease the OUT although they have clearly restored them already cause remember at SWC 2017 they showed some deleted scenes and they also had to restore for R1 so they may have already restored them or have Mike Verta’s Legacy but can’t release them cause Fox owns rights to Star Wars, so if they buy Fox then they could announce it a while afterwards and maybe release it with Solo: A Star Wars Story, May 25th 2018 or release it in January at a stretch who knows anything is possible.

Kind Regards Jason

😀

P.s: Or they could release a bundle of the Special Edition from 1997 with the really shitty Jabba, and the original theatrical cut in 4k with no grain and good colour timing and the original Fox logo.

Tv shows are still being shot on tape, only now in HD. Some 70’s sitcoms shot on tape look really bad now for some reason, especially Norman Lear productions. Maybe the video masters on those need restoration?

On the flip side the first two seasons of Saturday Night Live look great for their age. I’ve only seen one video glitch so far, and I’m not sure it would even have been visible on a CRT. You can tell NBC didn’t allocate their best cameras to the show early on though. It’s a shame they didn’t remaster the film inserts because the telecine they had at the time was pretty awful. (I could get better results shooting a projector aimed at a blank wall.) Whether that footage still exists is anyone’s guess.

It’s a shame a lot of Universal’s 60’s/70’s tv output shot on 35mm hasn’t been remastered. Some of what I see airing on Cozi TV are from really old broadcast video masters.

The company I work for is quoting on a lot of 70s sitcoms at the moment for restoration.
I’ve been looking at a bunch of master tapes of 70s shows over the last few months, and there is a rather awful historical footnote.
The ‘white’ sitcoms were shot on film, and occasionally in the highest tech tape based system of the day, the ‘black’ sitcoms at the same companies were shot on tape, with lower quality gear.
Make of that what you will, but it is why some US 70s tv shows look a lot better than others. Restoring the tape based ones is very hard to get looking good in hidef, but it is being done right now.

Interesting! While I see old shows like A-Team, Knight Rider etc being trivial to convert because they look as though they actually have a cut negative for each episode… how would one convert an old TV show shot on video?

Interlace? De interlace? Heavy sharpening? What would one do for glitches? I can imagine the headaches the conversion could cause for those working on them.

I remember reading a review for the Twilight Zone BD set and they mentioned that those episodes were presented in 1080i.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I watched the red carpet event for The Last Jedi. I was surprised George Lucas wan’t there. If he did attend, he wasn’t interviewed. He was at The Force Awakens event. I hate that he is getting more distant from the franchise. If they do release the Originals, then he would probably disappear entirely.

He did get paid Four Billion dollars to essentially walk away. Star Wars indirectly took a toll on his health and even his first marriage. I’d take a long powder too.

Supervising that museum he’s going to build in Los Angeles is probably more of a priority to him these days.

What would be really cool is if LFL brought him in to put together that “film school in a box” he supposedly always wanted for a home release of I-VI. I’ve never gone through the 2011 set, but it’s my understanding that it isn’t the grand concept George talked about.

The UHD release would be a perfect time to do it, and would add value to yet another re-release of the films.

Obviously I’d want them to include the restored unaltereds (and the ‘97 versions and theatrical prequels for History’s sake) in addition to George’s preferred version.

Just so long as his versions are considered the “official” versions of the movies, I guarantee you George wouldn’t care one bit about a restored OOT being available.

Like CHEWBAKAspelledwrong just said, he (technically) put them out on dvd himself in ‘06.

George supposedly crunched the numbers on what it would cost to restore both versions when he was preparing for the DVDs, but Fox pushed him hard enough that he decided to rush out a cheap transfer of only the SEs (hence the Lowry project). That’s coming from the Steve Hoffman Forums guy that worked on it. That may just be his way of explaining why the work was so subpar, but sounds legitimate since George was so adamant about waiting until 2006 to release Star Wars on DVD at all.

I remember reading something about that as well, probably somewhere on the following thread. The poster’s name is “Vidiot”.

Thanks, I’ll give it a read.

In retrospect, it’s almost like George was intentionally keeping this 4k transfer in his back pocket for later, since he was apparently talking to Iger about selling the company as early as May of 2011, several months before the blu’s streeted.

The blu rays were pretty cheap to make I bet. I think the deleted scenes were just things that they happened to be scanning for archival purposes anyway and the transfer of the films were same.

I’d like to believe that the OUT is the only selling point left if the trilogy comes out again, and the Disney love double dips and their vaults. I’d really, really, really like to believe that.

It figures. Just think of all the back catalog Dinsey films that aren’t even on Blu Ray yet. >_<

Seeing that news about the Disney-Fox deal is supposed to be revealed today when TLJ also releases, I’m thinking (and fervently hoping) this bodes well for 4K OUT prospects. It’s to much of a coincidence for it to not mean something significant for SW.

He makes it seem like it really is George holding it back, which I never thought was the case. I wonder if it’s an actual legal stipulation or if it’s just LFL trying to honor his wishes.

Pablo’s latest reply about GL: “I think people respect his wishes.”

You’d think after spending $60 billion, they really wouldn’t give a damn what Lucas thought.

The thought of a blu-ray of the OOT didn’t even enter the minds of the execs in charge of this deal.

If they really respected Lucas, they would’ve considered his ideas for the new films🤔
