Gotcha. Wasn’t trying to berate you for not having watched foreign films before, mind you, I was just surprised that anyone would pick Solaris as their first foray into foreign films, as it’s not exactly an accessible film even by foreign/arthouse standards!

Oh, and I can’t recommend City of God enough. One of my all-time favorites. It’s about gangs/crime/drugs in the slums of Brazil, all involving kids. It’s intense and hard-hitting, but also surprisingly very funny. Such a good movie.

I was browsing a Barnes and Noble store’s Criterion selection and the description on the back sold me pretty quickly. It was a random impulse buy that I’m very grateful for.

I’ll add City of God into my long mental list of movies to watch.

I am someone who has a lot of patience for slow movies, but Solaris is one of the few that has tested that patience for me - definitely felt there were a couple spots that when on just a tad too long. Otherwise, a fantastic film.

Blade Runner 2049 - 9/10

Oh wow look, a sequel released several decades after its predecessor that doesn’t feel like a retread or a greatest hits montage, and actually builds on and improves upon the original.

Really surprised this is being portrayed as a bomb just because it didn’t smash any opening weekend records. By today’s standards Titanic would be considered a failure.

Blade Runner is too much of a cult/niche film to pull the kind of money some people apparently want it to pull.

I’m assuming.

Blade Runner is niche? Apparently I don’t have that many friends, because most people I know like Blade Runner.

Most people I know have either never seen it or saw it once and don’t really remember it that well.

I fall into that second category.

Most people I know I have never discussed blade runner with, so I have no idea how they feel. The fault is mine, obviously.

I know a fair amount of people that love Blade Runner just like me but I still realize it is a niche film. The original was a cult classic. Both are slow, esoteric, and existential. Not the the standard sci-fi action fare. Ultimately the low numbers aren’t that much of a surprise. We should just be grateful they made the film in the first place (and hope that one day down the line they might be crazy enough to make another).

Lol, however it was just a counterpoint to the “everyone I know is super into it so it can’t be a niche film” comment.

BR 2049

Good grief.
My brief reaction spoiler free quick analysis.

It’s not really bad…but it isn’t good. To me 2049 is everything critics complained the original was in 1982 when describing the theatrical version.

Wow, Solaris was your first foreign film? I’ve known people who are super into foreign films that couldn’t stand Solaris.

I’m into world cinema in a big way and I loved Solaris. I’ve also seen the Soderbergh adaptation. Lew derided Soderbergh’s approach as reducing the storyline to, “Love in Outer Space.”

Might I recommend:

  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • Let the Right One In
  • City of God (2002)
  • Rashomon (or any Kurosawa, but that’s my favorite)
  • The Lives of Others
  • Das Boot
  • Stalker (same director as Solaris)

All good choices. I saw City of God at my local art house cinema during its original release and I was transfixed from beginning to end. During a conversation with a Brazilian, I mentioned it and they launched into a tirade, “Cidade de Deus is not the only film from Brazil!” Yep, I had no idea. That entire semester during my BA where I studied Hispanic and Lusophone cinema was all for nothing. 😃

I’d also recommend:

  • The Golden Dream
  • Joint Security Area
  • Black Book
  • The Baader Meinhof Complex
  • La Haine
  • Mesrine
  • Elevate (2011)

The other day, I caught Viva Zapata on TV - the combination of Kazan and Steinbeck sold me and it was interesting to see how it had influenced the work of so many filmmakers - from Lucas, to Coppola, to Noyce.

Ah, yeah, Baader-Meinhof is great too! I’ll have to check out the others on your list eventually, too.

TM2YC’s Ghostbusters III (edit of Ghostbusters (2016)). Considering the source material, I was surprised at how well I enjoyed this movie! Even though it didn’t fit into the continuity at all, I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

I don’t know why people are acting so shocked that the new Bladerunner is flopping. It’s almost three hours long and is a sequel to a standalone film made nearly 40 years ago that most people haven’t seen in its entirety.

I don’t know that I’d say it’s “flopping.” Sure, it’s not a blockbuster hit; but it is a damn good movie, and isn’t that what movies are all about? Not anymore, I suppose.

Of course, I guess the term flop has just become associated with bad movies, in my mind, so I have trouble calling it that.

I’ve also heard some people online, not here but elsewhere, giving others hell for not wanting to see this movie even though it’s good. Just think about all of the 90+% movies on Rotten Tomatoes that you’ve skipped because you had no interest in them.
