I honestly didn’t notice the time watching this film. I do lots of binge watching of television so I could probably sit through Solaris and stay awake now 😅

I wouldn’t say it felt long, because that has negative connotations. But i could definitely tell it wasn’t the same length as most films, which was nice I thought.

But whenever I am watching a movie and I have that sense that “Good the movie is still going”, I worry that it will feel too long at home watching it for the second, third, or fourth time.

Based on your posts you can’t be that old. I think of old as being elderly, but maybe that just means that I’m old.

I want to be mad at this but it’s true.

You’re not that old. My parents are like, 12 years older than you. 😛

Just picked up a Hammer Horror box set and am currently watching Peter Cushing in Night Creatures while drinking entirely too much red wine. Supremely enjoyable.

I’m not sure if that makes me feel better or worse.

I think you should feel better. You won’t be that old until your kids are my age and past it. You still have a lot of life ahead of you. You make “I’m old” jokes on here a lot, but I think you should maybe take a think about how old (negative) you really are. You’ve got many years of experience and wisdom under your belt, and you still have many more years of further experience and wisdom to get.

I don’t mean to sound like I’m preaching to the person who should probably be giving me advice, but I guess that’s what popped into my head, haha. In fact, maybe just ignore this post. 😛

Maverick (1994) – ★★★★ (of ☆☆☆☆)

This was very enjoyable. A fun movie that never stops being fun, with some real nice filmaking and cinematography. Great performances all around by the allstar cast. It wasn’t perfect, but I think it deserves the full four stars.

Blade Runner 2049.

This might be hyperbole because I just got home, but holy shit it was perfect. I’m so happy right now.

JEDIT: After napping and thinking about it in my first hour at work, it isn’t quite perfect - there’s an abundance of overly-expository dialogue that isn’t needed which makes it feel less subtle than the original, and Harrison Ford felt too much like Harrison Ford and not enough like Deckard (who is one of the least Ford-y characters he’s played). The excessive exposition is something that can be fixed pretty easily IMO, but I dunno about the Ford factor.

I give it a 9/10, which means it’s pretty much equal to the original in my eyes. No small feat.

Here’s hoping Villeneuve’s Dune happens. After seeing this, I need it in my life.

Solaris (1972)

A truly remarkable, poignant reflection on grief, identity, and humanity; this is an instant favorite for me. Also, my first foray into foreign films.

Wow, Solaris was your first foreign film? I’ve known people who are super into foreign films that couldn’t stand Solaris.

Might I recommend:

  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • Let the Right One In
  • City of God (2002)
  • Rashomon (or any Kurosawa, but that’s my favorite)
  • The Lives of Others
  • Das Boot
  • Stalker (same director as Solaris)

It’s the first foreign film that I can remember seeing. First foreign language film at least, I guess I’ve probably seen some British movies.

EDIT: I had to watch Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will this summer for a class, as well as French holocaust documentary Night and Fog. So it’s the first foreign languange film I watched on my own. There.
