I would call it “stereo tracked mono”
I would call it “stereo tracked mono”
I believe the term is “Mono” whether it’s encoded as a center-channel-only file or the same file in both stereo L and R tracks.
“Dual Mono” is usually used to describe amplifier circuit topology in which each channel of a stereo pair is processed/amplified separately.

You are absolutely right.
Mono/Stereo refers to the number of distinct sources (in caricature, the number of microphones), not to the number of channels. So here, there is only one source, even if 2 channels render it.
So yes, it is simply “mono”.
My only question is then where should the “dot” be on the accompanying diagram. The single dot in the top center would seem to indicate single channel, center only encoding. So, would the appropriate diagram say “16mm mono”, then with TWO dots (upper left and right), in the diagram? That might seem at first to be contradictory, but it would more accurately reflect the encoding.

Only one centered dot is the diagram for “Mono”, so I would use it in this case, even if the encoding is on L/R channels.
But I thought that it also gave the reader an indication of what to expect in terms of playback on a 5.1 system. Is that not so?

I don’t think so.
Silverwook found an audio glitch on reel 1 of the laserdisc audio.
I’ll look into it over the weekend.

If the glitch is in my source files, please send me a pm about it. 😃 It might be something that I’ve already fixed.
As far as the mono audio goes, using two channels is probably the best option, but the diagram should still be the single dot. This is pretty standard on commercial film releases.
Using only a single channel will force the audio to the center speaker. This is fairly straight forward when encoding to AC3 or DTS, but lossless sources like PCM or FLAC will require setting the channel mask bit on the file to 2. Without setting that bit, the audio may only be played from the left speaker. The disadvantage to using a single channel is that most users have better speakers for the FL and FR channels than they do for the center. Those users may prefer to have the audio coming from their better two front channels than from a single inferior center speaker. Many surround systems do not use a full range speaker for the front center channel. Using a single channel source, playback through the two front speakers may be difficult to achieve without altering the setup of your AV Receiver.
Achieving correct center-channel playback from a two channel mono source will simply require engaging pro-logic decoding. Since the Left and Right Channels are identical, the decoder will send the entire signal to the center speaker. The main disadvantage to the two channel format is that when encoding to AC3, it wastes useable bitrate and therefore quality on that second audio channel.
If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…
Definitely do a dual mono track as indicated above a single track while more accurate to older theaters is less impressive due to center channels being less accurate than tower speakers and by having less power from receivers.
Also most theaters ran mono through several large speakers at the front of house anyway so single channel mono isn’t really all that accurate.
The general description used for home video is 1.0 or 2.0 mono depending on the channel type used. No cover will list dual mono. The vast majority of studios still use 2.0 to this day, 1.0 was generally only used for space reasons until Warner Bros. started using 1.0 for many of their classic DVD titles in the mid 2000s. Then Criterion and a few other labels started using 1.0 mono on Blu-ray a couple years ago, usually for space so they could fit extras on the disc.
Still so freaking excited for ROTP.

OK thanks troops, I’ve made a few edits and amended the image.
looks amazing.
this might be a dumb question, but what are the two white circles behind the storm troopers in the image on the spline (and at the top right on back cover)?

It’s a James Bond gun barrel and the stormtroopers are about to (or fail to) shoot the gunman.
So, a new book came out and we learned so much, and it is called, “Anguilosaurus, Killer of the Living”.
It’s from the poster the art is taken from.

Yep Silverwook’s right, they accidentally sort of became a signature of the Puggo series:

cool. i never burned or printed covers for these discs, so i guess i never picked up on that!
(but now that I am so close to having all three, i must just have to change that)
I need those beautiful covers prominently on my shelf!

You guys might want to hold off printing these for a bit. With Return Of the Pug so close to completion I thought I’d go back and unify the series somewhat. There are a couple of things that do need tidying up.

You might want to revise the back of PSB to reflect it also has a Dolby Stereo track in addition to the mono.
Is it too early to start hashing out cover ideas for Puggo’s next project? 😉

OK will do buddy thanks!
What’s Puggo’s next project?

My guess is Puggo Grande in HD…

mwah
What’s Puggo’s next project?
I hope it involves a 16mm camera, a couple dozen friendly but non-hygienic mice, and a copy of The Phantom Menace.
Actually, skip the camera part.

That might be a problem as one of Jaxxon’s two SW prints is still on loan elsewhere for the mono mix, and the other one has got that vinegar smell going on.

If there was a 16mm scope TPM out there, I’d be amazed.
