Not that it applies, but according to one source, an R2 unit is needed to both repair the ship and to plot hyperspace travel. A full fledged Jedi can plot their own hyperspace travel so if the X-wing was in good repair, he wouldn’t need an R2 unit in the back to fly the ship.
