4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 225

Why is it taking so long to get Star Wars officially in 4K anyways? We know that the trilogy has already been restored by Reliance Media Works since 2014 so what’s the hold up?

Waiting for Mike to finish ESB and ROTJ from the prints LFL supplied him with.

I mean, we should’ve at least gotten the Special Editions in 4K by now. Perhaps they want to bundle the cuts together.

In '97 we got the special editions on VHS. New cuts of the films.
Seven years later, in 2004 we got the special editions on DVD. Again, new cuts of the films due to more alterations.
Seven years later, in 2011 we got the special editions on Blu-Ray. Yup, new cuts due to even more alterations.
If the pattern is to be followed, then we’ll get Star Wars on a new format and it’ll be something we haven’t seen before lol

Also, wasn’t the first official Trilogy box set from 1990?

The seven year thing is probably more coincidence than an actual pattern.

George wanted to release the SE in '96 and TPM in '97 until plans changed.

He wanted to wait until RotS was finished to release the OT on dvd … until he realized fans had waited long enough.

As for the timing of the blu-ray, well, there was no new movie release to time it with, just the ongoing clone wars show. They didn’t want to wait forever like they had with the dvd release and probably just said “screw it, now’s as good a time as any.”

The fans waiting didn’t have anything to do with it. He released it before ROTS to remind people that they actually like Star Wars and drum up a little excitement before they troop off to see the latest POS.

Well, he also realized that.

A third factor is that waiting until after RotS was out (probably so he could package a I-VI “saga” dvd release) would have placed it only a few months before there would be actual hd disc formats on the market. Hilariously, he released the GOUT - laserdisc era transfers - after that.

One more indicator of Lucasfilm’s active determination to screw over the fans.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

According to theForce.net, the true fans will accept only the official Lucas-versions as the real films and the rest are babies. Also the Prequels are better because Lucas liked them more.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

They’re entitled to their opinions and we shouldn’t get caught up on them.

Ha, copyrights that run out! That’s a nice one.

Copyright for Star Wars expires 95 years after publication, so in 2072.

I will be 99 years old. I better start eating healthier.

There’s always cryogenic freezing. But then you might have to battle sentient otters for the last surviving copy when they thaw you out. 😉

Nice to see they employed people with the knowledge and authority to make those judgements…NOT!

AFAIK, the ‘vault’ strategy only applies to a relatively small (and defined) collection of classic animated films. Those movies that we see coming out in ‘Diamond’ and ‘Platinum’ editions and so forth.

Their other strategy is, of course, to simply not bother transferring movies that they don’t think will sell. Black Cauldron, anyone? (On another note the complete, uncensored director’s cut of that movie still hasn’t been seen by the public).

Maybe this is where the OUT falls. But really, who knows?

There was an uncensored director’s cut of The Black Cauldron?
Maybe the OT will be released after Disney decides to release SOTS & The Black Cauldron Uncensored DC on Bluray.
