Congrats on finally finishing this NeverarGreat! Very interested in seeing what colour choices you’ve made in certain scenes.

Do you have any plans to work on The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi?

Looking at the whole thing put together after years of working on it piecemeal, I see nothing but problems and ‘almost there’ shots. I finally start to see what the film should look like, which makes any shot that doesn’t quite make it look terribly unfortunate in comparison. But the time comes when you have to abandon the work and release it.

After this is released, I’m planning on taking a long break from color correction. Hopefully there will be a good official release of the trilogy in the meantime (or another great fan project), but if that doesn’t happen then who knows, I may be back at it someday. 😉

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I know the feeling. I am finally starting to get to (but am not quite at) the point where I feel like I can watch the film again. Aside from the constant color critiques that pop into your head, even just knowing precisely what shot follows exactly which shot (even small, non-iconic ones) is enough to kind of ruin the fun in my opinion, as my mind would kind of go to the next shot instead of focusing on what was on the screen. And there was a time where I could have been given every individual shot and assembled them in order without reference.

But glancing at it recently, I’m finally at the point where I would not be able to assemble it like that. Even some short scenes I was slightly off about the order of! Road to recovery…

I’m familiar with that feeling. Reminds me of that famous Leonardo da Vinci quote ‘Art is never finished, only abandoned.’

You definately deserve a big break, honestly I could never focus on a single release for such a long period of time like you have and to an even greater extent Adywan has done, I’d go nuts.

I was suffering from Star Wars fatigue myself a few months back when I put together my latest Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back Semi-Specialised releases, I needed a break and didn’t get round to doing Return of the Jedi. I’m planning to get that finished in the next few months just before The Last Jedi comes out.

That’s the one thing I dislike about working on my favourite films, it wears them out for me when I’m constantly jumping back and forth between scenes out of sequence to check how the colours look, trying to make sure the colours look good across the whole film. It can take a number of months to regain all my enthusiasm for the film again after i’ve finished working on it.

I think all of us who’ve taken a crack at grading the film know this struggle lol

I have to force myself to try and let my mind go blank watching it otherwise I’m just thinking too much about minute details.

I suppose that’s how Lucas felt when he looked at the OOT, particulary Star Wars: you see nothing but problems and ‘almost there’ shots. It’s kind of ironic, you start a project to essentially make the film more enjoyable to watch for yourself, and by the time you finish everyone enjoys it, except you.

Pfew, I though I was the only crazy fan project maker! 😄

NeverarGreat, congratulation, hope to see it soon.

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Actually, you both are PRO crazy project makers (in your own league)! 😄

Thank you for your great works, from me and every single member here (and not only here).

And you have inspired me, and many others, to jump in the project making bandwagon, so thanks again! (also, to have made me crazier than ever, by the way…)

A New Hope Technicolor Recreation v1 is hereby released!

The links are available via PM and with the stipulation that you meet the basic requirements set down by NJVC and Valheru (member for 6 months, post count more than 10)*.

The project will also be on the 'spleen within a week if all goes well, and the project will have several sizes/bitrates available in case you don’t want to burn dual layer Blu-ray discs.

Note that this project is still technically unfinished, since some lightsaber shots have yet to be replaced. There will be a version 2 at some unspecified date, and this will be the ‘final’ version. The color of some shots will undoubtedly be tweaked for the final version, but nothing dramatic.

*If you’re a new member and you own the blu-ray, PM me a picture of the official Blu-ray with the Blu-ray case and a banana** on top for scale and I’ll give you the links, as well as my heartfelt appreciation for your effort. 😉

**Just kidding. It can be any type of fruit. Except cantaloupe. I hate cantaloupe.

I was just about to ask again if any decisions had been made about release format. There is indeed a dual layer version, then? I’ll order discs immediately. I think I’ll watch this back to back with Rogue One this weekend.

Hi NeverarGreat,

I’m member for 4 months only, so I don’t meet the conditions to get a download link, and I’ll wait for MySpleen availability, no problem !
Anyway, I just want to say a huge thank you for your amazing work.

Doesn’t like cantaloupes. That’s hilarious!

Congrats again Neverar! A real achievement and years of work. Can’t wait to watch.

This is absolutely gorgeous. It’s hard to believe this is still the Lowry transfer. Even the CGI looks a lot better when the colors are this good. Endless thanks for all your work on this; I’m sure a lot of folks are (rightly) psyched about this being the basis for future Despecialized editions, but as a child of the 1997 tapes I’m going to enjoy the hell out of having an SE that doesn’t look like I’m watching it through purple sunglasses for its own sake.

That’s why I’ve ended up going from 3 TB (which I though was more than enough) to 9 TB. Gotta have room for gems like this.

Congrats Neverar, and thanks for all your hard work! I’d definitely want the largest version on the spleen.

Welp, I’ll just be slowly dying on the inside until I can get it, I’m without a PC until I build my new one. RIP me. 😉 Anyways, congrats again.

I woke up with a startle at 5:30am. I got up and checked on my downloads. One piece left, 5 minutes left to go. 30 minutes later I’ve got everything assembled and copied to the right place. And then for the next hour and a half I enjoy this stunning work of art. Excellent attention to detail! Thank you again! And thank you for leaving in the Jabba scene! Though I own the blu ray I wouldn’t allow my kids to watch it… no need to hurt them with those terribad colors. Now I’ll let them see the new stuff too. 😃
