Smart technology is stupid.
My Blu Ray has the ability to turn on the TV, as you know. However, it also refuses to work and eject the disc if the TV is off. And it wasn’t even giving me the indication that it had power because it wasn’t turning the TV on itself (and I haven’t adjusted that setting yet), and it has no indication lights of its own.
