I saw Dunkirk in 70mm IMAX (which is equivalent to something like 11-15K I think) in Rhode Island. What does that mean?

It means a 20 dollar ticket and another 20 dollars on concessions.

The screen was the size of Rhode Island. Not that the screen is so big, just that Rhode Island is so small.

$14 ticket, $0 concessions. A bargain honestly.

I quite appreciate the state’s size. It’s concise - something that I can’t say for most states unfortunately.

You New Englanders and your small states. How typical.

I really don’t see how 14 dollars for a movie ticket is a bargain. I know that the times have passed me by, but the movie theatre being a 50 dollar outing for a small family is a reality that I just can’t accept.

Yes.

You used to be able to buy a coke for 5 cents or a house for $10,000.

The Premiere cinema in Cardiff (UK) £4 a ticket, any film, any format, any time!

I think it’s £3 for a child.
So for a family (2x adults + 2x child) £14.

Quality that mate - seems the owner has a decent business model and doesn’t mind cutting his profit margin if it gets people and families back in (and may likely make a little back in the longer run) - better that than it laying empty and decaying for 10 years 😃

My local is £6.90 an adult, £5.40 kids all days and times - bar Tues & Wed when it’s £5 adult, £2 kids. Doing well too and getting in people in from various community groups, people just looking to meet up with mates, and those who want to just get out the house etc.

  1. I don’t have a small family.
  2. At some theaters tickets for non-IMAX movies are more than $14. That’s just how it is now.
  3. Seeing the film in IMAX 70mm was one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life - well worth it.
  4. I pretty much don’t spend my money on anything besides movie tickets, so I can live with it. $14 is the price of a meal at a restaurant these days too - I know which I’d much rather do.

$14 for a real Imax screening is indeed a steal, and you saw it at an actual multiplex and not a museum where that’s more the normal price.

Here in the DC area your average multiplex will charge $20 just to see something in liemax.

I once snuck an entire Chick-Fil-A meal into a theater.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

A co worker in his 20s turned out to be a pretty big Star Wars fan who bought a Kylo Ren helmet for 800 Euros among other things. I asked him if he has the original OT and he replied he doesn’t and doesn’t care to see them. The whole notion even seemed strange to him, haha. He also thinks Kylo Ren is cooler than 'ol Darth Vader, and the EP7 Stormtrooper look better than the original ones. I said i prefer the originals and he asked me “Why?” as if i just said i like to smear Pinguin guano in my face. I don’t get this generation.

It’s like (and not necessarily in a good or bad way) the people who like “all Star Trek except the Shatner stuff.” Or who think it all makes sense as long as you get rid of the pre-Next Generation show.

I don’t get it because I grew up watching all kinds of “old” stuff.

OTOH, I realized today that when I watched Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) in 1979 it was about as old as The Matrix or The Phantom Menace is now. (OK, Air Force One or Jurassic Park 2 if you want to be more exact.) The Wizard of Oz was newer when I saw it in 1973 than Star Wars is now.

Cripes.

The Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials were barely 41 years old when I saw them on tv in the wake of Star Wars.

And really, 800 bucks for a Kylo Ren helmet? I saw a really nice Stormtrooper helmet replica at Best Buy that was $80 bucks and probably better made than what was used in the actual film. You can modify a Hasbro Ren helmet to look pretty good I’d bet.

I just want you to understand all the trouble you’ve caused around here, letting Frink run loose. For shame.

What if in the future the SW fan community does succeed in convincing Disney to release the OUT in 4K but then 10-15 years later when 8k(4320p) is released Disney, for whatever reason, chooses not to budge on releasing it like they are now. What then?

Then this.

In my experience the main cause of higher ticket prices has been the theaters’ need to constantly upgrade everything.

I’m lucky that the closest multiplex to me still only charges as much as the theater near where I grew up did seven years ago. That’s probably because it hasn’t been upgraded in at least that much time. Granted, there are a bunch of other potential reasons.

This is the same understaffed theater where I saw Wonder Woman, where they leave the 3D filters on almost all of the projectors except the one for their biggest screen. Competition from other nearby theaters is probably another factor, and maybe they’re saving on the rent compared to other places.

But they don’t have a Dolby or a liemax or even a “large format” screen, and the theaters that charge more all have at least one of those things.

ETA:

I’ve noticed there’s an inverse relationship between ticket prices and access to free parking.

Higher ticket prices go straight the the studios. That’s why snack prices are so ridiculous- it’s the primary revenue stream for most theaters, especially independent ones.
