JOHN POWELL TO SCORE UNTITLED HAN SOLO MOVIE

Composer John Powell, who may be best known for his memorable soundtracks to the Matt Damon Bourne series, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda (1 and 2), and How to Train Your Dragon (1 and 2), will be lifting the baton to score the upcoming young Han Solo movie, due in theaters next year.

Powell, a London native, has written music for dozens of films since moving to the US in 1997, earning an Academy Award nomination for his stirring score to How to Train Your Dragon. Powell is only the third composer to be welcomed into the exclusive family of Star Wars live-action music writers, which includes the legendary John Williams (the eight Skywalker saga movies) and Michael Giacchino, who scored last December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The untitled Han Solo movie will be scored in the style of the original Star Wars movies but retain Powell’s distinctive voice.

The untitled young Han Solo movie, which is being directed by Ron Howard, will be released on May 25, 2018.

Jedit: Here’s a sample of his past work

I have full faith in Powell. His score for How to Train Your Dragon is sensational.

So as part of “researching” this movie and Alden Ehrenreich. I have watched both Beautiful Creatures and Hail Caesar and Ehrenreich is actually a pretty good actor. I was firmly in the Anthony Ingruber camp before they cast and must admit was a bit disappointed when they didn’t cast him.
He is a much better physical match for Ford than Ehrenreich who reminds me far more of Tom Hanks than Harrison Ford. My only real concern about Ingruber is that his performance would have turned into a 90 minute impression of Harrison Ford, but a decent director should be able to avoid that, “Would that it were so simple!”.
Anyway my concerns about Ehrenreich have been considerably reduced since watching these two movies, I still think my “suspension of disbelief” would have been greater with Ingruber.

I also think that John Powell’s scores so far have been pretty good, and the recent “leaked” photos have also helped alleviate my fears of a disaster. Woody Harrelsons character looks pretty awesome. Maybe this will turn out to be cool after all!

I’m afraid this movie is going to suck. I have no desire whatsoever to see anyone, anywhere, ever play Han Solo but Harrison Ford. It’s not like James Bond; Solo IS Ford. There is no Han Solo without him, only an impostor. Indiana Jones I might be a little more open to re-casting, maybe, but not this.

So the movie is DOA for me for that reason alone. Add the fact that from everything I’m hearing it seems like just another fan service mash-up like Rogue One that, again like Rogue One, tells a pointless story which over-explains the background of the original film, and it just holds no interest for me whatsoever. I don’t want to know Han’s backstory dammit! Some things are better left to the imagination.

Disney is starting to worry me. I was initially excited at the prospects of expanding Star Wars with a constant stream of new movies, but they just keep milking the same cows over and over again. The possibilities for this universe are so vast that it’s incredibly disappointing they can’t seem to do anything more original with it.

Temporarily forgetting Perry King did a fine Solo in the radio dramas.

Or people proudly declaring they have no interest in it.

Doing it right, I guess.

Are you from the future? Because at present we’ve only had two films released, one of which was a spin-off starring all new characters.

The only other announced spin-off is the film you’re currently lambasting sight unseen.

We have no idea what the third spin-off is nor do we know if they plan to continue with the saga films or decide to retire them for a few years.

So I’m at a loss to figure out how they’ve continued “milking the same cows.”

Is this film really supposed to take place during R1? Like, a week or so before ANH?

In the last scene, Han gets plastic surgery to look like Harrison Ford. Either that, or he’s CG-faced for the whole movie like Leia and Tarkin.

As Lando is in the movie, I would think it’s at least a couple years before the OT. I got the impression from ESB that Han and Lando had not seen each other in several years.

I don’t ever worry or feel disappointed about a movie that hasn’t even come out yet, let alone one I haven’t seen yet.

But I must feel outraged for whatever reason!
